Internet 9. Should we change?

I am asking this question since every time I go on Youtube now there is a warning strip across the top saying that they will not be using Internet 7 for long and we should change to Internet 9.
what does this entail exactly. Is it just a click to change or does it change many programmes and what happens to windows and Favourites lists. I am afraid to go ahead until I know a bit more. I have not been lucky to find any answers online as yet. I keep getting sidetracked when something attractive shows up and then I am lost for an hour or more......

Re: Internet 9. Should we change?

I had this same conversation with one of our forum members some weeks ago.

Which Operating System are you using, Vista or Windows 7? To my knowledge it's not available for Windows XP.

In theory the upgrade should be fine and it should be importing your Favorites/Bookmarks without trouble. But as is the case with Microsoft products, it's a big upgrade and will require you to update your Operating System (Online updates at Windows Update), that's always a hit or miss affair since it can require installing a number of updates that might cause some headaches.

Here's a few links that might be of value to read that offer opinions on both sides of the spectrum:

IE 9 Guide

ZDnet Five Reasons not to Upgrade to IE9

Personally I don't like the security holes in IE, or that it's so deeply tied into the Operating System. I prefer Google Chrome or Firefox browsers, but as is always the case with these things, one's mileage my vary.

Re: Internet 9. Should we change?

I'm pretty sure I am on Windows 7 but I think there is also a Windows 8. Does that mean I have to upgrade that if I upgrade to IE9 ?
Also if you are using Chrome do you have to use IE9. I had Chrome and Realplayer automatically inserted into my PC when I downloaded a video a few days ago. I since uninstalled them both.
I have always done well with Windows and IE. Use OutlookExpress for email. No problems there.

I will look up the links Superrookie. thanks very much.

Re: Internet 9. Should we change?

Check out that IE9 Guide I linked to above, it may help you find answers on if you want to upgrade or not, it's pretty thorough.

Do you have any friend or family member that can help you fix things if you decide to update and something goes wrong? Or preferably someone to do the update for you (downloading the IE9 and whatever missing updates you might need at Windows Update, depending on how often you update your Operating System, that may or may not require other additional updates and security patches), and backing up your important files, bookmarks, etc prior to that?

On your question on Chrome. Nope you don't need to use IE9 or upgrade to it. That's one of the reasons I prefer the third party browsers like Chrome or Firefox, they are standalone. And unlike IE, upgrading them or removing them is not a big deal that deeply affects the Operating System.

The only real downside of Chrome for a new user is, you'll have to familiarize yourself with a new browser. It's never comfortable to learn a new program when one is used to something else until you get used to it with some practice and usage. Overall it's pretty simple since almost all the basic things to do with both browsers are the same, but a few of the details are different.

OutlookExpress is standalone so you can still use that as your email with any browser.

Re: Internet 9. Should we change?

Thanks for your further remarks Superrookie. It is a help because I was very wary of going ahead and doing the download of IE9. Angel on my shoulder kept being negative I think !
Anyway I sent an email to my good tech person who built this PC for me and always takes care of added stuff. I think he will say yes or no and then I will feel even safer. I really don't like changing so much when I am really happy with what I have. And I have a lot of programmes etc and lots of hard drive space now.
It was just the youtube message that caught my eye. I like that site and use it and don't want to be cut off.

I am one of the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' people most of the time. I will let you know what heppens.

Re: Internet 9. Should we change?

Brad6, I hope your tech friend can help you. I dont think you are using Windows 7 as your operating system because Internet Explorer (IE) 7 does not work on Windows 7. In fact, Windows 7 comes with IE 8 pre-installed. And IE 8 works fine with Youtube.

Most likely you are using Windows Vista or an earlier Windows (though, contrary to what I said above, it is possible that since your tech guy 'built' your pc as oppose to you buying it from a store, then he may have actually upgraded from Vista and modify IE7 to work - which would be extremely unusual).

In the event that you are in deed using Windows 7 and your browser is IE 9 then you have a 'compatibility view' problem.

If your tech guy isn't available to assist you please PM me and i will provide you with instructions on how to rectify the situation.

Re: Internet 9. Should we change?

crash254,
thanks for your input. I actually did a proper investigation of my own PC. I now know that I have Windows 8 Professional. My tech guy is a computer expert. Has about ten of his own which he uses all the time and he goes to college and he also works for Computer company. He is amazing in his knowledge which is far beyond anything I can understand. Anyway he has always looked after our computers and he enjoys all my questions. Since I am a senior he is very patient, which is surprising, but I am so interested I guess. I can do a lot of things that some younger people can't do apparently and I surprised him now and then with what I have found out myself. Got to keep the brain lively and the computer is just the thing.
Right now I have not found anything about IE9 not working with W.8 so I am going to wait before I do anything about changing. My tekkie just emailed me that it would be OK to go to IE9 if I want to. I think I will wait.
Appreciate your input very much. I just may ask you a question sometime. Peggy

Re: Internet 9. Should we change?

Sometimes it can be a headache to keep track of all these software updates and changes, isn't it? I'm using a Mac laptop and I recently made the change to a new operating system - from "Lion" to "Mountain Lion". For Windows, it's like changing from XP to Vista. There are some minor changes, but it mostly looks the same... it makes me question whether I should have made the change in the first place! LOL!

I always liked Windows XP the best out of the Windows operating systems. After Vista, I felt like Windows had lost some of the "user friendliness" of the XP days. I always preferred using XP for some reason.

Re: Internet 9. Should we change?

Greg san I agree with you. I loved windows XP. they kept telling me that it would soon not be working at all when I had my last computer. that is wby I agred to a change. But I hated the change to Windows 8 at first. You just have to get used to little changes which are most annoying I think. Of course I like it now but it slowd me down at the time. Ithink XP is still bwing used even now.

Re: Internet 9. Should we change?

Well I just took the giant steo and installed IE9. I have to see what is different before I can really make any decision. As of now it does not help me with the one thing that I wanted. It is just the first step in using something totally new. It is different and it has changed my screen layout. Not sure I will keep this. Of course I said that every time I hd to change anything in the past....
