MALWARE

Don't forget to check your PC to be sure it is not already affected by the malware. The FBI will be shutting things down by Monday if not before.

It is important you do this. Click on your DNS dns-ok.us you should see a green background.

Re: MALWARE

I've been a little behind on news as of late, so I had no idea about this malware issue.

Here's a couple of articles I just read:

Malware Threat to Internet Corralled

Thousands Could Lose Internet Monday After Malware Attack

Thanks for the information, Peggy-san.

Re: MALWARE

Greg san,
Do this tonight !!! It only takes a minute and the shut down will begin tomorrow but I don't know if ti will be in early morning or what.
Just type dns-ok.us in your browser and you will be able to check if your PC is OK if the background of the sing shown is green.

Do it now Greg..!!

Re: MALWARE

Thanks again, Peggy-san. It looks like I am okay. The whole process was quite easy, though! All I had to do was go to that website, and it told me right away that I am in the clear.

Re: MALWARE

Thanks Peg, got your email too. emoticon

Thankfully it looks like, like the Y2K issue, it's turned out to be a non-issue with few computers affected. Those who are, if someone's unfortunate enough to be affected can get their issue resolved at their internet provider's tech support line.

This issue brings up one point though - I hope folks are at least are using antivirus (only 1 should be installed), anti-spyware/malware (one or two), and firewall software programs on their computers for protection, but also regularly updating them (virus or malware definitions update) (at most every week or two), and especially those on windows, to use Windows Update every month for the security patches. I also use another layer of protection with ad-blocking and no script addons in the browser, since many of the virus/malware junk come through from there.

Re: MALWARE

Well, glad that's over... I didn't hear about it until I saw this thread, but I guess it serves as a reminder to be mindful about keeping our computers/networks secure.

Yes, I hadn't been good about keeping up with the news for the last couple of days, so I'm glad I saw this thread!

Re: MALWARE

I got an email from a forum member asking for suggestions on what antivirus and anti-malware software to use on windows and thought this might be of use for others.

If you're willing to pay for a commercial one there are a number of great options, but free is decent enough for most users.

Free Antivirus Options: avast or AVG (Pick Only 1)

Free Anti-malware: Malwarebytes

One thing of note, for those not very experienced with computers... especially in the case of antivirus software, it does hook itself in the Operating System, depending on your computer specs or what you have installed, it could either clash with other software or slow things down or other variable and random computer stuff that's hard to pinpoint a resolution for... especially if one already installed an antivirus program a while ago and forgot it's there somewhere. Having 2 antivirus software can lead to computer problems.

This is one of those situations where there's a price to be paid for something, either be unprotected from a virus that may never come or deal with the potential headaches of a software that may clash with something - I'd go with the latter... last year I got a very nasty virus from one of the wiki sites from one of their ads... since then I've switched to adding more protection layers like browser addons for blocking ads and scripts, and haven't had any problems since (but these too take some time to configure the addon or some aspects of some websites might not load properly). Personally I've used both recent versions of the antivirus programs above and have had no problems.

Re: MALWARE

I've used the free version of Avast! for several years and really like it. It's very user friendly and does a good job of keeping current.

My computer guru is a big believer in protecting your computer as much as possible, so I have both the Avast! antivirus and the added protection of a router that serves as an additional 'firewall' between me and the bad guys out there.

Note: After this conversation dies down, how about we move this thread to the Tech Forum?
