Re: K-Drama: 당신 뿐이야 (My One and Only)

Again, thank you for the complete summary, SuperRookie. Very much appreciated.

In general, the ending of this drama left me happy and satisfied. Over the years, I think I've given up on demanding a high standard of covering and concluding all the storyline tangents. Instead, I find more pleasure in a Daily that has sufficient and regular doses of happiness or fun going on to balance out the villainous activities. The endings I dislike are ones contrived simply to end it all, often making a disjointed mismash crammed together as an ending.

My favorite parts of the ending were Bongja's wedding and a house being built for all the family. I presume this hanok housing will also include Gunghwa's parents and Gramps. A regular community!

Dohui and Seojun don't bother me. She has from the start been a person who walks to the beat of a different drummer. I see her as a very savvy person, able to balance her loyalty and feelings against the negatives that were, or might arise in the future. I can also see her making a life in Japan if she marries Seojun. His mother must be grateful and happy that a beautiful, smart, talented woman like Dohui has remained his friend through thick and thin. Seojun will come to that conclusion, too, if he hasn't already. He was always attracted to Dohui and they do make a nice couple. It all depends on whether he has paid his debt to society and decides to change his character and attitude. I have detested many of his actions, yet I don't see him as beyond redemption, or being forgiven by others.

Unchan was the best leading male in a Daily that I've seen for a while. He was entirely likable and respectable. He and Gunghwa made a good couple... good chemistry going on much of the time.

The Bongja/Insuk (Ms. Hong) ending didn't sit well with me. It was nice, but it didn't fit Bongja's character, in my opinion. Buying and secretly giving a rose to Ms. Hong daily—that's a big stretch in what Bongja's personality has been all along. It seemed much more a contrived (and unsuccessful) way to end the Rose and Mr. Oh Mystery.

Speaking of Bongja, I loved the scene of her longingly touching the wedding gowns while Gunghwa is trying one on. I only wish her mood at the gown salon could have been carried forward to the wedding itself. It was a downer to see her back to her old critical, stick in the mud self, unable to enjoy even her own happiest moments.

Then there is Gachan - In the beginning he was such a weak, chauvinistic guy. The world centered around him, demanding the women wait on him hand and foot. His male ego was ultra-sensitive and he was frequently offended by the audacity of women not respecting him to his level of expectation. I have loved his growing and turnabout. He has become a dedicated husband and father, trying to do his best, seeing his efforts blooming at the end. I have thoroughly enjoyed his adventure into Trot singing and his "Ki Gachan–the Singing Lawyer" talk radio program. To see Gachan have it all—singing, talk show, respected and practicing attorney—has maintained the happy experience for several weeks. He became and is my favorite character. Loved the actor, too. He was perfect as Gachan, regardless of which 'hat' he was wearing.

Re: K-Drama: 당신 뿐이야 (My One and Only)

Thanks sherlesin, and you're welcome nchristi. emoticon

I've enjoyed writing summaries (for lurkers/readers who might have missed episodes and maybe accidentally mention the edited scenes lol) and discussing the final weeks/months of this series and Gwanggaeto. I've been running on empty as of late though with both series concluding at similar times... so I'm definitely looking forward to the break and will go back to posting more casually versus the summary format as we start a new daily tonight.

Great comments everyone! Said it before and last night, but again, the forum members really make this viewing so much more rewarding with the viewpoints, especially in the dailies where we have a lot to discuss throughout a number of months.

Despite the flaws of My One and Only, it sure did have an unusually high charismatic factor that drew a lot of us in, didn't it? The next one will have a lot to live up to... looking forward to the next one though, can't get enough of these! I wish we had a weekend break to mull over and deliberate on this series before the next one starts, as they did in Korea... but we don't have that luxury, with the next one ready to air in a few hours.

Re: K-Drama: 당신 뿐이야 (My One and Only)

The trot music was such a focal point in the beginning with the violin, I thought for sure ,since they brought the genre back with the singing...it would become a family affair with the kids & all learning to play.

Surprising to me that Mr. Na really did have a part in Mr. Ki's death, albeit accidentally.

Love may not be logical, but, I really didn't get the Soyeoung-Dohui couple, What could she possibly see in him?It all seemed so platonic.

The bio-Dad--mysterious how, if he was her (Susan's) benefactor how could he have let her be sent out of the country & separated from her child.

Thanks greatly for all the re-caps- & comments....adds a lot of dimension to the story & experience.

Great points, sherlee and I'm glad to see you weigh in. I too was a bit disappointed in how anticlimactic the whole Mr. Na story was in relation to Mr. Ki's death, given the huge to do they made throughout the series, only for it to end up as a plain ole accident... I liked the various theories a lot of us had in this thread more than how things actually played out. LOL!

I think, we have to expect many flaws with the dailies because the scripts are written fast and furious to make much real sense and appeal to a younger audience.

Re: K-Drama: 당신 뿐이야 (My One and Only)

Agree with your points pali, especially with the liquid nature of the production schedule, they don't have a defined end point until the other production (series) is ready to air, and that could complicate the story pacing. In this case, I have a feeling KBS' budget issues, the strikes of this year had some kind of an effect on this production as well.

There was a joke in the weekend series, My Husband Got a Family, where towards the end of the the writer's stint in one production, she was focused on getting new work instead of focusing on the ending parts of her current job. I had to laugh about that if that kind of an issue was in play for some daily writers. LOL!

What did you think of this series compared to say the last two, My Bittersweet Life or Smile Donghae?

Personally, I am glad that this drama is finally over...Gunghwa had become such an annoying character IMO and with the introduction of so many sub plots, none of them were ever fully developed. Looking forward to the next daily even though I much prefer the evening dramas that run 16-20 episodes (a lot meatier with a shorter amount of time investment)

curly carrot it's been ages since I saw you post on this board. Welcome back! Good to know you're still watching and following K-Dramas. I remember reading your posts from a while ago. Feel free to jump in on the various K-Dramas you're following. Which of the shorter dramas have you been following lately?

Please don't be a stranger, hope to see you around.

My theory is that with the same writers, there was an attempt to duplicate the ratings success of Smile Donghae, but at some point KBS decided to cut it short to around 120 episodes.Existing story lines couldn`t be completed because of time, and shorter ones had be added to fit the new schedule. I prefered Smile Donghae which despite its defects, maintained dramatic tension and had better character development.
