Re: K-Drama: 계백 (階伯) (Gyebaek)

Reminder, final episode of Gyebaek is tonight on MBC Digital/LA18.3!

I inquired with MBC America and they are still working on finalizing the schedule for next week, they mentioned to me that it is "most likely" to be followed by Lights and Shadows on MBC Digital next week.

The episode 35 rerun in Chicago has no subs...I'll have to stay up and see if the first run of # 36 will have subs...

Also MBCD in Chicago has been running commercials/previews of "The Duo" today.
I thought that might be next, but I see by your board it was just on last fall.

You can view any Episode of Gye Baek on line at Hulu.com: http://www.hulu.com/gyebaek. All with English subs.

Looking forward to folks' comments on Ep. 36.

Re: K-Drama: 계백 (階伯) (Gyebaek)

I found this drama just after it had started last night. I don't think I missed much. They seemed to dwell a lot on the small talks between the General and the Queen when she was in the prison. Not sure why he would be concerned after stating his feelings were no longer there and that she was indeed a traitor. He could not understand her treachery at all. He must have known that she would be executed in any case.

So sad about his family but that was historical fact. I have not researched what happened to the King but I am assuming that he would also die in some way. I don't think Baekje existed after Silla took over. I thought the actor playing the King was really good. He is a trained theatre actor and you can tell whenever he is in a drama.
thought Lee Seo Jin did a very good job with a role that was the real hero of the country from start to finish.

Re: K-Drama: 계백 (階伯) (Gyebaek)

Knowing that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I was intrigued that the very beginning of Ep. 1, and the reprise of those same scenes in Ep. 36 when Gye Baek is walking through the ranks of his troops, both evoked similar scenes in Russell Crowe's "Gladiator." Likewise, at the end, when his wife and children greet him in the afterlife, also harkened to a similar scene in "Gladiator." Interesting...

Just watched a documentary about archealogical finds in what may have been Baekje. They found lots of armour which was painted with lacquer. consequently it was well preserved although in hundreds of pieces. They finally decided that it was made by Baekje and was maybe sent to the Tang emperor as a gift. I noted that the all the armour worn by Gye Baek soldiers was indeed very shiny and looked so much better than most armour in sageuk dramas.

Wikipedia has this short article about King Uija--he was exiled to China along with two of his sons, where he died. Note that in a general way, the series follows roughly the historical sketch provided in this article.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uija_of_Baekje

Also, a short article about the battle itself:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Hwangsanbeol

Note the similarity of this account to the portrayal in Ep. 36. The screenwriter and director both knew their history, it seems.

Really interesting to read this history. I find it somewhat hard to understand the reons given for Gyebaek killing his family. Seems strange to me that such an action would inspire the troops. Not being from that era it does not compute...

also note that the wicked traitor Queen is not mentioned in history on the wiki pages. Was she fictional just for the romantic suggestions at the beginning?

All in all I think I found this drama much tighter than the Gwangaetto story.

I certainly will neveer forget the marvellous battle armour.

I suppose Gyebaek's family would have been killed anyway.. But still, for HIM to do it? Even the children?

It showed his commitment to the battle to come--obviously not something we can relate to here in the 21st cent. class blockquote also note that the wicked traitor Queen is not mentioned in history on the wiki pages. Was she fictional just for the romantic suggestions at the beginning?Yes, it appears that she was a fictional character, as was his father and mother in the early episodes--we just don't know about those people from the historical record.
