Re: K-Drama: 광개토대왕 (廣開土太王) (Gwanggaeto, The Great Conqueror)

Kittypaws: By all accounts Damdeok was succeeded by his oldest son, Jangsu, who upon his father's death in 413, became king at the age of 19(!!). He reigned for 78 years and concentrated on consolidating and strengthening the territorial gains made by his father. He is responsible for erecting the memorial stele mentioned in the above posts.

You're welcome Kittypaws. I'm glad to see you post your thoughts. This viewing would not have been completed in terms of the discussion without you, Peg, MKana and TaeWang PyeHa!

Hope to see all of you this fall in the King's Dream (Dream of a Great King) discussion thread!

But also hope to see some/all of you in the Soldier thread in 2 weeks.

TaeWang PyeHa, since you haven't seen it yet, I hope you decide to watch Soldier along with our schedule. It'll be a great benefit to have an active discussion with this upcoming grand series.

SuperRookie, I'll see what the schedule allows. DramaCrazy has quite a few of the episodes already posted and with English subs. "Soldier" is a barely adequate English title for the series, imo, but it's a lot better than "God of War." The latter title has connotations in English which don't accurately reflect the original Korean (or Chinese, for that matter). Literally, the title translates to "martial spirit", in the sense of "military deity." "God of War", on the other hand, connotes the Roman god of war, Mars, or the Greek god, Ares. Maybe "War God" is closer to the mark? But that is somehow lacking, too.

Interesting info on the original Korean title. As far as the english one, I remember they were going back and forth with the title before its airing. I guess they had difficulty coming up with a title to settle on, until they eventually settled on this one. And yes, I agree that Soldier title sounds rather uninspired, even if it were a completely accurate translation... I don't know if the name would raise the interest of viewers on the fringe.

Re: K-Drama: 광개토대왕 (廣開土太王) (Gwanggaeto, The Great Conqueror)

TaeWang PyeHa, just that little tidbit regarding Damdeok's son, Jangsu, will have me looking on the internet to see if anything is written about that era. A reign of 78 years? He sure must've been doing something right. And. . .sounds like there's enough in that post-Damdeok era for another historical drama in the future???

I also was educated, through these posts, about the importance of that memorial stele. Thanks for the reference to Wikipedia; I intend to read it. Through the centuries, there must have been many battles claiming ownership of that.

I see Soldiers listed on the Saturday schedule for Ch. 18.3 from 1:45 p.m. to a little after 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 6:45 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. That may fill the gap while waiting for the fall debut of Dream of a Great King. However, I don't know how long ago it started in that time slot.

I may be the only person out there without cable but oh what a blessing the conversion box has been! Even though I don't watch tv much, there are still times, like anyone, when I'm looking to see something different, and the conversion box, in conjunction with the bunny ears, has provided opportunities that even standard cable users can't get. More than once, my neighbors have offered to watch an episode with me on their cable, big-screen tv, but then I had to run to my own place anyway to watch it because they couldn't get it!

I also noticed that Ch. 44.6 and 44.7 offer on Saturdays around 4:00 p.m. programs about the Qin Empire and the Tang Dynasty, respectively. They probably don't have subtitles, although Ch. 44.7 is marked as an Arirang Global TV network station, so it might be in English. But even if they don't, they're interesting to watch for the culture.

Don't worry, you haven't missed out yet. It hasn't started for us.

The 6:45pm and 1:45 time air time is for their main channel, MBC America channel, premium on cable/satellite/fios channel. MBC AM is their main channel that requires a subscription fee, so they usually air the shows 1-5 months ahead before putting it on their other channel, the free MBC Digital/LA18.3 one, which is what I use for the MBC threads per the local benchmark.

Soldier episode 1 will tentatively start next weekend, June 23, and will likely occupy the time slot of Thousand Kisses which is at 2:50pm-4:00pm at 5:00am. But who knows, MBC might change the schedule for this series. Will have to wait until next monday when MBC updates the Digital 18.3 schedule to know for sure. I'll most more details when in the Soldier thread.

Thanks, SuperRookie, for always being one step ahead. Didn't know all that. I know I look at the non-cable tv schedule and just assumed it was accurate.

Re: K-Drama: 광개토대왕 (廣開土太王) (Gwanggaeto, The Great Conqueror)

Brad6, SuperRookie, Kittypaws, TaeWang PyeHa,

Ah! Does this feel like the last day of school to you, and everybody is writing in the yearbook reminiscing the year? Yes, it does feel like that. I felt like this place has been such cool hang out place. If I hang out a bit longer I’ll be a better writer, a better thinker, and having a better historical perspective of Korea and China, thanks to you all! Yes, I’ll miss reading and writing in this thread very much. No, it wasn’t a great series, but then many times it is not the destination, but the journey that is rewarding, one that will be memorable, to me for a long time, as I don’t watch a lot of Korean dramas to begin with.

Have a great summer everyone! May your summer be filled with great Korean dramas. I know where I’ll be, soaking the summer fun, summer movies, summer travel, summer good eats, and summer sun until my complexion is baked well done to a golden brown (more brown then golden) then I know summer is over.

Brad6, take care! And I’ll check out the Equator Man, no I won’t cringe when Lee Jun Hyuk turns up evil, because once played a sweetheart always a sweetheart, right! And you know what, I shared your sentiment on Jang Geun Suk's hair and fashion. I laughed hard when I read your comments about him in the Love Rain thread, because I felt the same way. Although one time I saw him in an interview, he was reflecting on how much he wanted to be himself and speak his minds, instead of having to be told what to say. After that, I became less critical of the actor, he was just playing his role to what the majority of his audience wanted to see, in this case the Japanese audience.

SuperRookie, looks like you will have enough historical drama to watch until September, and we don’t have to pass the Soju to you. I won't be watching much TV, since it would be difficult for me to try to catch any program on tv on a regular basis. The DVR recording is unreliable, and recorded programs seemed to disappear quickly before I have time to watch. Although, I may try to watch Time Slip - Dr. Jin, if it airs here with e-subs.

SuperRookie: The title is clearly difficult to translate adequately into English, as your remark indicates. Sometimes you do the best you can and leave it at that. But I think there could have been a better alternative than "Soldier."

Re: K-Drama: 광개토대왕 (廣開土太王) (Gwanggaeto, The Great Conqueror)

Good point on the journey, that's the way I felt about this series, Gwanggaeto and a lot of K-Dramas. LOL MKana, we will have to drag you back to watch King's Dream with us this fall. Enjoyed your yearbook analogy. LOL! emoticon Please do join us when Time Slip Jin airs, however, MBC Digital LA18.3 is quite behind on the weekend slot... 6 months to go of Hooray for Love and Feast of the Gods before Time Slip is ready. I've heard bad things about it, but like it's so bad that it's actually somewhat entertaining. I'll be watching it when it airs here.

On Peg's point, I agree. Equator Man as far as I'm concerned is the best series that's on now, easily. Very suspenseful, heavy and top-quality series. My only knock on it, the old Rebirth/Resurrection series already shattered this glass ceiling before, and much better at that. If it weren't for Resurrection, I'd love this series much more. Still on its own merits, so far, an excellent series. As of now, at episode 15 (16 aired last week, haven't seen it yet), it's on my #2 best series of the year, behind History of the Salaryman.

TaeWang PyeHa.... I can see it now. When I told friends of Gwanggaeto The Great Conqueror the title piqued their interest... but when I tell them there's this cool series to watch, Soldier, the name isn't exactly too exciting, is it? I predict crickets chirping. lol God of War wouldn't have been accurate as you noted, but having a videogame or western film name might be more exciting to more casual viewers of the genre. It'll be the same issue with King's Dream, not exactly an action packed sounding title to draw in the masses. emoticon
