3/11/2011 Sendai Earthquake

At about 10:15p.m. local time or about 3:15 p.m. JST, a major earthquake hit northern Japan tonight. From some of the early reports we had a 8.4 quake. I'am watching the feed from MSNBC or switching over to CNN just to keep up with the fast breaking news. But since then I finally remembered to bring up NHK world report in English on-line so I can watch a live feed. Wow it was weird to watch the NHK feed and then to look up at my TV and see their version of the same feed on MSNBC. Funny while NHK told me their feed was live ( real-time) the reporter at MSNBC wasn't sure if she was watching a delayed feed. Man the flooding just in the first hour has massive! and how we all have go on a tidal wave alert!

This morning the quake was been scaled up to having been a 8.9 mag earthquake. It occured at 2:46 P.M. JST / 9:46 P.M. PST. The tsunami that hit Sendai was up to 10 meters high and the early death count is now over 300, in the local Sendai area. But I'am afraid this will be much worse. So far my best site for news from Japan has been NHK, other eng.-language sites have been over loading and I've had to fall back on CNN,Fox,and MSNBC feeds for news.

Re: The 8.4 Earthquake of 3-11-2011

I had gone to bed early last night and didn't hear about the major earthquake until this morning. I was shocked when I heard the news... it seems that it's now been raised to a magnitude of 8.8 (though I've also seem reports of 8.9) making it the most powerful earthquake to hit Japan since they began recording them in the mid-1800s. My condolences go out to all the victims (at least 95 people were killed in the quake) and I hope that everyone there will be okay...

Apparently, the worst hit areas were in Eastern Japan—Tokyo and the areas north of there. Many fires are raging, and I heard that the trains were all cancelled, leaving many people stranded in the capital and unable to return home or get in touch with their families.

It appears that UTB 18.2 has been airing breaking news from NHK World about the quake all morning, so they will have updates. Also, the NHK World website will have breaking news (as well as info about the projected tsunami) as well.

What a horrible time... may everyone be safe...

Re: The 8.4 Earthquake of 3-11-2011

Quakes of this magnitude are always a scary thing, especially when you see all the footage that has come out today. I was glued to the TV watching CNN when they had a feed from NHK with all the waves rushing to shore. While it's still too early to know how bad this situation is; considering how huge this quake was, it's a good thing it was further away from land. If this quake struck nearer to the cities, this could have been even more catastrophic.

Having experienced the Northridge quake here in the 90s, it was something that I'll never forget and now recently back in SoCal it's still something in the back of my head.

I hope for them that the worst is over.

Yes, with all of the new footage coming in on NHK World, it's extremely scary. It appears that areas in northern Japan (especially the fairly large city of Sendai) was hit the hardest—and there is still the threat of aftershocks, tsunamis, and fires (especially at an oil refinery in Chiba, near Tokyo) breaking out. There are hundreds of people missing and unaccounted for, as well...

UTB has preempted their regular programming this morning with news from NHK World.

NHK World is continuing to air on UTB Channel 18.2. I still watch 18.2 on my PC with TV Tuner. Wow, TV and HDTV are really difficult to view! TV Tuner is smooth, readable and high quality feed.

Re: 3/11/2011 Sendai Earthquake

I've been tuning into UTB's programming throughout the day. There was just a report from an official of the Japan Meteorological Agency, who warned people to stay away from coastal areas due to the fear of more tsunamis.

It appears that in addition to the initial earthquake and aftershocks, there was also another magnitude 6 earthquake in north-central Japan earlier today.

Re: 3/11/2011 Sendai Earthquake

Wow! Even now NHK world is reporting that with all the damage to their Nuke-power plants just to be safe over 5.5 million homes in Japan are still without power. The reports on-line are that deaths are feared to be over 1,000, and coastal Japan will be under Tsunami watch for at least another 24 hours!
