I know what you mean. Sometimes I press one of those control F keys and my whole screen goes crazy. The most annoying part of it is that I have no idea what I pressed to make it that way! LOL. I suppose that sometimes the best thing to do is just to leave the computer when it's acting up and have a cup of tea/coffee. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Hiroshi66)Thu, 07 Feb 2013 07:52:51 +0000 Re:https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060785,from=rss#post2060785https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060785,from=rss#post2060785Super. Never knew any of that. Great info and thank you so much. The worst problem for me was that I had no task bars and could not get any and therefore no way to change anything. I just pressed things and hoped for the best. Whatever was primarily wrong made the PC run VERY slow. I am not a patient person.... finally shutting it down and going away was a help. Once I then turned PC on, and also went away, it sorted itself out without my impatient assistance I think. Your post is going to be a godsend I am sure.nondisclosed_email@example.com (brad6)Wed, 06 Feb 2013 15:41:04 +0000 Re: Strange thingshttps://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060777,from=rss#post2060777https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060777,from=rss#post2060777Here's a handy list of all the F key functions. Source: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000306.htm What are the F1 through F12 keys? Answer Commonly known as "function keys", F1 through F12 may have a variety of different uses or no use at all. Depending on the installed operating system and the software program currently open will change how each of these keys operate. A program is capable of not only using each of the function keys, but also combining the function keys with the ALT or CTRL key, for example, Microsoft Windows users can press ALT + F4 to close the program currently active. Below is a short-listing of some of the common functions of the functions keys on computers running Microsoft Windows. As mentioned above not all programs support function keys and may perform different tasks then those mentioned below. If you are looking for more specific shortcut keys and function key examples we suggest seeing our shortcut key page. F1 Almost always used as the help key, almost every program will open the help screen when this key is pressed. Enter CMOS Setup. Windows Key + F1 would open the Microsoft Windows help and support center. Open the Task Pane. F2 In Windows renames a highlighted icon, file, or folder in all versions of Windows. Alt + Ctrl + F2 opens document window in Microsoft Word. Ctrl + F2 displays the print preview window in Microsoft Word. Enter CMOS Setup. F3 Often opens a search feature for many programs including Microsoft Windows when at the Windows Desktop.. In MS-DOS or Windows command line F3 will repeat the last command. Shift + F3 will change the text in Microsoft Word from upper to lower case or a capital letter at the beginning of every word. Windows Key + F3 opens the Advanced find window in Microsoft Outlook. F4 Open find window in Windows 95 to XP. Open the address bar in Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer. Repeat the last action performed (Word 2000+) Alt + F4 will close the program window currently active in Microsoft Windows. Ctrl + F4 will close the open window within the current active window in Microsoft Windows. F5 In all modern Internet browsers pressing F5 will refresh or reload the page or document window. Open the find, replace, and go to window in Microsoft Word. Starts a slideshow in PowerPoint F6 Move the cursor to the Address bar in Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and most other Internet browsers. Ctrl + Shift + F6 opens to another open Microsoft Word document. F7 Commonly used to spell check and grammar check a document in Microsoft programs such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, etc. Shift + F7 runs a Thesaurus check on the word highlighted. Turns on Caret browsing in Mozilla Firefox. F8 Function key used to enter the Windows startup menu, commonly used to access Windows Safe Mode. F9 Opens the Measurements toolbar in Quark 5.0. F10 In Microsoft Windows activates the menu bar of an open application. Shift + F10 is the same as right-clicking on a highlighted icon, file, or Internet link. Access the hidden recovery partition on HP and Sony computers. Enter CMOS Setup. F11 Full-screen mode in all modern Internet browsers. Ctrl + F11 as computer is starting to access the hidden recovery partition on many Dell computers. Access the hidden recovery partition on eMachines, Gateway, and Lenovo computers. F12 Open the Save as window in Microsoft Word. Shift + F12 save the Microsoft Word document. Ctrl + Shift + F12 prints a document in Microsoft Word. Preview a page in Microsoft Expression Web Open Firebug.nondisclosed_email@example.com (SuperRookie)Wed, 06 Feb 2013 12:11:35 +0000 Re:https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060774,from=rss#post2060774https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060774,from=rss#post2060774Greg, I just got back here. Must say that all seems to be well at this moment, which is a long time since this was posted above. anyway thanks for all help. I did something odd the other day and everything changed on the desktop. All was magnified so that only the right hand quarter of the screen showed a huge message or picture. I don't have a clue what I clicked or what occurred. There was no way to click into any other screen and could not go to 'start' or any of the toolbars. Everything at a standstill. So I tried a few things by pressing F10 etc etc. It surely did a lot of changing but nothing would then get me back into normal viewing. Must say I was very frustrated. I turned off the PC and waited before turning it back on. Still the same nothing except now it was the primary startup picture of the ASUS and INTEL which comes on usually when putting on the PC It took me over half an hour of fiddling around until I finally turned PC off and went and had a cup of tea. Getting my expert to come would take a few days maybe and I wanted my email etc and websites back to normal. When I finally turned the PC on again I just looked at it and left it and went away. When I did come back there was my desktop and all was back in order. I don't know what happened to mess things up and I sure don't know what I did which finally set things back in order. I am not any smart user, but now at least I am not afraid to press keys with F1 to F10 and use arrows. I don't know what they do but it's better than just looking at the screen. Plus it saved me at least a hundred dollars. I am getting brave in my old age.....nondisclosed_email@example.com (brad6)Wed, 06 Feb 2013 11:24:35 +0000 Re: Strange thingshttps://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2041438,from=rss#post2041438https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2041438,from=rss#post2041438You're welcome, Peggy! I'm glad you were able to get the text size looking normal again on other websites. Hmm, I wonder why the text is appearing to be large on your e-mail? I wonder if it is another glitch related to IE 8. The good news is that even though the text is appearing to be huge on your end as you are composing the e-mail, the receiver is most likely going to see the text in the size that you intended it to be. So, as long as you set your font to size "12" or "14" as you are typing, the receiver of the e-mail will probably see the text displayed in that same font. I guess the problem is that the text is appearing at a huge size, even if you don't set the font size to be that high. One more quick question. In your e-mail, is everything being displayed at a large size? In other words, are any icons, buttons, drop down menus, etc., on your e-mail also being enlarged? Or is everything normal except for the text in the content of the e-mail? nondisclosed_email@example.com (Hiroshi66)Wed, 19 May 2010 06:21:52 +0000 Re: Strange thingshttps://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2041437,from=rss#post2041437https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2041437,from=rss#post2041437Greg, thanks for post. This only happens with email and it started yesterday. It just suddenly happened when I was on a website. I was able to go into tools and 'read' and get the size down in everything except email. That is so large when I write an email and it is the same when I receive an email. I will have a go at this tomorrow again. Must go to bed now. Does the text you enter become a huge size only when you are writing an e-mail? Or, did it appear to be large when you were posting a reply at CJK or on other websites, as well? Perhaps this could be another bug that is associated with IE 8. Did you just start experiencing this problem today, or has it been happening ever since you installed IE 8? By the way, congratulations on the good news about not having to take the driving test until 2013! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Hiroshi66)Tue, 18 May 2010 16:49:24 +0000 Re: Strange thingshttps://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2041426,from=rss#post2041426https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2041426,from=rss#post2041426Well it looks as though the letters are normal size. When I write an email they are HUGE. I hope they don't appear that way at the receiver end. It really does appear as if I am yelling my head off. I am not annoyed...I am not even frustrated. I'm glad we were able to help. That sounds great, I hope you'll be able to get Firefox up and running tomorrow. Please let us know how it goes and if the problem of the cascading posts goes away once you try again with the new browser. On IE 8, it's quite a shame that the uninstall process is so difficult, isn't it? Completely removing and going through with a fresh reinstall of Windows can be complicated and a big hassle, so it's great that there is always the option of switching to another browser like Firefox or Google Chrome. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Hiroshi66)Thu, 13 May 2010 22:30:39 +0000 Re: Strange thingshttps://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2041340,from=rss#post2041340https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2041340,from=rss#post2041340Thank you Greg and thank you nchristi. I am going to try installing Firefox again. I will do it tomorrow when my brain is not tired. I think sometimes that software and programmes tie us up and then we can't get rid of them. It's the same with some webpages that arrive and you can't get rid of them. I just turn off the PC altogether sometimes. I wouldn't mind google chrome so much but they eliminated things that I really liked and needed. Getting my toolbars the way I wanted was a horror. anyway tomorrow will be the day. Thanks again. He said that you cannot uninstall IE 8. You have to go through a complicated mess of removing Windows from your computer, then reinstalling Windows and the IE release you want. That's why he suggested that installing something like Firefox would be the easiest way to get Peg up and running on our board without the cascading effect happening. nondisclosed_email@example.com (nchristi)Thu, 13 May 2010 20:07:25 +0000 Re: Strange thingshttps://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2041336,from=rss#post2041336https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2041336,from=rss#post2041336I think the version of IE you installed was the problematic Version 8. There are lots of problems associated with it and so many people haven't installed it. I think this is because IE 8 is a 'beta' version and is still in development, so many of the glitches it has haven't been fixed yet. I know what you mean about Google Chrome—I've started using it recently and it has taken quite some time to get fully used to. I was previously using Firefox, and out of the two I've found Firefox to be a lot easier to navigate and become accustomed to. Like Nchristi mentioned, you can have more than one web browser installed on your computer, so maybe you can try installing Firefox and see if you have the same problem with the cascading posts. Yep, perhaps Runboard's recent changes have something to do with this, as well. I remember they were making some major changes a few months ago (the entire log-in page was revamped, for instance) and the updates seem to be ongoing, as the user profile page has been modified over the last few months, as well. Here is a link to Firefox's official website where you can install their browser: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/firefox.html Their website has some screenshots of what the recent version(s) of Firefox look like. I was going to suggest 'downgrading' to IE 7, but from what I've seen on the internet, it seems to be rather complex if you have already installed IE 8, so I thought it would just be easier to install Firefox. I'm not very sure about one could return to using IE 7, but hopefully someone might have a suggestion or will know an easy way to do it. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Hiroshi66)Thu, 13 May 2010 19:53:54 +0000 Re: Strange thingshttps://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2041328,from=rss#post2041328https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2041328,from=rss#post2041328ncristi, Many thanks. You have accurately described what is happening. I was very hesitant to chang from IE.7 but many of the places I clickedaskedmeto change and many sites would no longer reveal without my updating. I have had firefox some time ago but deleted it because I changed to Google chrome. I really did not like it because it changed too mcny things and also deleted all my passwords. Then later I installed the IE.8 or is it 9?? I am too confused now. anyway I am now on the verge of installing Firefoxonce more. Changes are not always for the better..at least for the consumer it seems. Ever onward !!! Pegnondisclosed_email@example.com (brad6)Thu, 13 May 2010 16:03:45 +0000 Re: Strange thingshttps://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2041327,from=rss#post2041327https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2041327,from=rss#post2041327 My understanding from Peg‛s description is that the posts in a thread (some posts, in some threads) are "cascading" off the screen. I called my computer guru and asked him about possible solutions. First, as mentioned above, Internet Explorer (IE) 8 is problematic and he refuses to install it on his computer, sticking with IE7. (IE6 was also problematic and many refused to install it, as well.) His suggested quickest fix is to install another browser, such as Firefox. More than one browser can be installed on a computer. For example, I have SeaMonkey, IE, and Firefox and switch between all three for various reasons. (I never use IE unless it is necessary, as some of the Korean sites will work only with IE.) Okay, I‛m not a techie but here‛s what I got out of my guru‛s explanation of what‛s happening with the posts cascading. Currently, cascading styles of technology are the direction everything is changing to. In the past, old HTML tags were embedded, now they are being dropped and new standard HTML without similar set of tags is used to control the appearance by using cascading style rules. He also mentioned that if posts from only the same members are cascading, while other posts are not, it is probably because the particular browser those "cascading" members are using is different from others of us. Here‛s one other item to put into the mix. I noticed on the Runboard Support Forum they have made some changes in the last several months. These changes may be affecting some features on our board, since our features were created quite a while ago and may not have been updated to be compatible with the newer technology RB is using. Hopefully, one of our tech savvy members will be able to explain more accurately, or give a suggestion on what Peggy can do next. nondisclosed_email@example.com (nchristi)Thu, 13 May 2010 15:16:10 +0000 Re: Strange thingshttps://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2041306,from=rss#post2041306https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2041306,from=rss#post2041306Peggy, sorry to hear that you've been having this problem on your computer. I'm glad you were able to post again today! You're right, I don't think your computer is behind the problem. One of the possible reasons behind all this could be the upgrade to Internet Explorer 8 (IE8). From what I've read around the internet, many people have been having problems with their internet browser after upgrading to IE8. So it could very possibly be the browser change. That might also be behind the problems you were having on the Google homepage, as well. However, it might not necessarily be a problem with IE8. Are there any threads where you did not have this problem? You mentioned that as the days went by, certain posts would move far to the right. Is there one particular thread where this problem is taking place, or is there more than one? I'm curious which thread(s) you've been experiencing this in—it might give us a clue into figuring out what is causing the problem of the cascading posts. We'll get this all straightened out, Peggy! I'm glad you were able to post today. If anyone has an idea about what could possibly be causing this problem, or if you've had a similar problem occur in the past, please feel free to post your thoughts! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Hiroshi66)Wed, 12 May 2010 16:19:24 +0000 Strange thingshttps://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2041302,from=rss#post2041302https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2041302,from=rss#post2041302I have talked with nchristi about a problem and am now putting it into this thread. For over a week when I have been on the thread for one of the dramas I have finally been unable to post because the screen was moving posts all the way over to the right. For example one post would be OK and then the next would be slightly off centre. Then as the days went by it would alternate from normal, to the next post being so far over to the right that half the message was gone. Ultimately I was unable to post any answer because there was no place for me to 'click on to reply. I have recently changed to upgrade to Internet 8 and strange things have indeed been happening on my Google homepage. The toolbars disappeared and then came back in strange formation. Now today they are back to their previous normal presentation. I don't know if Google is playing around or if it is my PC(which I don't really think is happening) or whether Runboard is causing some glitch. Has anyone else had this kind of problem.? I have today been able to post so I hope whatever the cause was, has now sorted itself out. Peggynondisclosed_email@example.com (brad6)Wed, 12 May 2010 15:47:03 +0000
