posticon MBCD (18.3) - free 24hr over the air channel starting Aug 1 2008

from MBC24.com

MBC America is planning to launch a free 24-hour over-the-air digital television (DTV) channel "MBCD" on both coasts of the US beginning August 1, 2008.

On August 1, LA-based MBC America is going to launch a 24-hour over-the-air digital television (DTV) channel "MBCD" simultaneously on both coasts of the United States. "MBCD" is the first Korean channel ever to be on-the-air around the clock and free of charge. Over ten millions home on the west and east coasts will be able to access MBCD through the channel 18.3.

What differentiates MBCD from other channels?

In order to stand out from the crowd, MBC America will be providing closed captioning in five different languages (English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese). To celebrate the launching of our on-the-air DTV channel, we will be exclusively covering the 2008 Beijing Olympics in Korean. We will be airing in real-time the Korean athletes' matches as well as highlights from the most anticipated games.

On what channel can I view MBCD and in what areas will it be available?

Viewers on both coasts can view MBCD on channel 18.3. Not only will MBCD air popular TV dramas such as "Jewel in the Palace," "Damo," "Phoenix," and "Coffee Prince," but also entertaining variety programs like "Infinite Challenge" and "Golden Fishery" as well as the news and interesting HD documentaries like "The Yellow River," "Serengeti," and "Glacier." MBCD will air all the shows that viewers have been anticipating to watch again, thereby catering to the viewers' needs. On the west coast, MBCD will be available in Los Angeles, Orange County, Ventura, Riverside and San Diego County. On the east coast, it will be available in upstate New York, areas of New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

What exactly is an over-the-air digital television (DTV) channel?

Digital TV (DTV) is an innovative new method in broadcasting that uses the same data bits as a computer and sends and receives moving images and sound through digital signals. DTV provides images of higher quality and enhanced sound, and it also allows for multicasting.

How can I watch TV after February 17, 2009?

According to the FCC, all television broadcasting stations must switch from analog television to digital television starting February 17, 2009. Viewers with digital television can already access the digital signals, but viewers with analog television sets must install a digital receiver (set-top box) separately.

What is a set-top box?

The DTV set-top box is a receiver installed on the analog television set and antenna that properly converts digital signals into analog signals. Currently, the government is providing two $40 rebate coupons that will allow two set-top boxes per family. If needed, please access the website WWW.DTV2009.GOV in order to request $40 rebate coupons that are redeemable within 90 days of your request. Please visit the MBCD website at WWW.MBC24TV.COM for further information in both Korean and English.

Thank you for your interest.

I'm screaming for joy right now Woohoo! This is great news! More kdrama fare to wallow in and now we won't have to complain about no subs on MBC. My only concern is if this new d-tv station will only air older dramas. Hopefully they'll mix in new with old. So what happens to Ktan now? Is it still going to be on air or will they ditch it entirely?

Fortunately I just got a digital converter for one of my older TVs. If you don't have cable or a newer tv it's time to go online to get your gov't discount coupon to pick-up a box. They're a little hard to find, I had to go to 3 places before I found a target with 2. I was going to get both but it I didn't want to be a pig about it. I'm not sure but I think you might need one for your VCR if your still using one.

It'll be interesting to see the olympics from a different view point and actually live while it's happening. Maybe they'll have less athlete profiles and more sports. NBC's coverage gets a little tiring with the commercials and profiles. Sure it won't have team USA but SK must compete against team USA sometime.

Re: MBCD (18.3) - free 24hr over the air channel starting Aug 1 2008

I picked up a couple of Coupon Eligible Converter Boxes (CECB) about a month ago and I'm very impressed by the picture quality (PQ) from my old analog sets. When watching the Japanese dramas these last few weeks, I would switch back and forth between digital/analog, and there is a noticeable improvement in PQ, it is much, much sharper and brighter... and no snow, ghosts, drifting and also the sound is better... IMO, it comes in better than cable ever did, it's like a brand new set, not too bad for a $20 box. emoticon

That's cool that KSCI will add a new channel, that means that there are now six (LA18) sub-stations.

LA18.1- KSCI (DT)
LA18.2 - KSCI (SD)
LA18.3 - MBCD (Korean)
LA18.4 - ?
LA18.5 - Armenian programming
LA18.6 - TOP TV USA (Taiwan?)
LA18.7 - Vietnamese programming

If you plan on using a CECB with your older analog sets, remember that you'll need to use an over-the-air (OTA) antenna to be able to receive a signal. (Rabbit ears, indoor, outdoor rooftop)
NOTE: many local stations are currently broadcasting digital on the higher UHF band, but may move back to the lower VHF band after Feb 2009... which means your UHF antenna may not pick up some stations after the switch, keep that in mind if you plan to buy a new digital ready (UHF) antenna. I have ours hooked up to the 30+ year old rooftop antenna, and reception is just fine, but I tried basic rabbit ears, and it also comes in just as clear.

Your location will dictate what type of antenna you'll need. To find out what stations you'll be able to receive, go to TV FOOL, enter your zip code to get a listing of how strong the signal is and which direction you may need to point you antenna for optimum reception.

Some of the popular models are, Zenith DTT901, Channel Master CM7000, Digital Stream DTX9900, DTVPal, to name a few... much more detailed info on selecting a box, user reviews and comments can be found on the AVS forum.

emoticon CECB thread on the AVS forum... more info than you'll ever want to know.

Which model did you get? I stopped by my local Radioshack back in June and the Zenith model was out of stock at the location; they had another brand, which I nearly mistook as the Zenith, but thankfully when I got to the register I asked him whether this was the Zenith, to which he replied in the negative. He made the comment how it seems everyone who came in wanted the Zenith, and then asked me if I wanted the Zenith. I did, and he looked to see whether any of the Radioshacks in the area were getting a shipment and indeed there was, so I paid cash in advance for the 2 converters. He said he'd call me as soon as he got them, which happened to be the next morning when the store opened. class blockquote It'll be interesting to see the olympics from a different view point and actually live while it's happening. Sure it won't have team USA but SK must compete against team USA sometime.Don't forget to check out DTV Channel 4.4 of NBC's (Universal Sports), as I think they'll also air selected Olympic sports on that channel. I got to see a majority of the Olympic trials back in June/early July, and it was great the channel aired repeats.

Since I got the converter back in June I had no problems receiving channel 18's substations till recently (at the time the converter was hooked to my outdoor/on-the-roof antennae). Today I decided to hook it up to my rabbit ears and I was finally able to recieve the channel's sub-stations like before.

I wonder how much the re-airing of the older dramas will affect the sales of YA Entertainment's boxsets (since the ones that MBC America listed were sets that YA are selling).

Hopefully MBC's variety programs will be subbed, I'd love to see/understand some of them.

I got the off brand Sansonic from Target it seems to be working ok for the few weeks that I've had it using rabbit ears. I really wasn't too concerned with the brand but I'll have to try Radioshack for my 2nd box.

I also watched the swimming trials on 4.4 but was a little disappointed that they weren't televised live. That's my only gripe, almost all olympics shown on the west coast is shown taped, even when the games were in Atlanta.

As for YA's sets, I'm not really sure how it will affect sales. I tend to think that YA's sale just might go up. If people love a series enough they'll want to see it over and over again, especially "Thank You" or Dae Jang Geum. On the downside sales might drop from over exposure.

Just wanted to let everyone know that MBC-D is now up and running. I just happened to tune in just in case while waiting for Innocent Woman. Right now 7:00 Spotlight is on with english subs. I have no idea what episode it's on because it was already on.

Looks like they're testing the system, because that's what's written over the show. You can still watch it though.

I just checked during the noon hour and they were showing Dae Jang Geum.

I was trying to see if they had closed captioned english subs for the comedy/entertainment show last night but I couldn't get it to work if they did.
