Profile
    * Name (kanji): 長山洋子 (ながやま ようこ)
    * Name (romaji): Nagayama Yoko
    * Profession: Actress and Japanese enka singer
    * Date of birth: 1968-Jan-13
    * Birthplace: Tokyo, Japan
    * Talent Agency: JVC Music

Early Life
Nagayama was born in Tokyo. At the age of four, she began attending min'yō group singing lessons with her father. Although she originally went because she enjoyed the attention from her father's classmates, she soon began studying and performing min'yo together with her father. When she was ten, she started playing shamisen. Her father gave her a shamisen that she still uses today.

J-pop era
Nagayama continued singing and performing through her junior high school years. Her plan was become a professional enka singer after finishing junior high school. However, when she was sixteen, her handlers told her and her parents that she was too young to sing enka. Despite her father's wishes, she then decided to become a J-pop idol singer.

Her debut song was Haru wa SA-RA SA-RA (春はSA-RA SA-RA), released in 1984. It was not well received, nor were her releases over the next two years. However, in 1986, Nagayama had her first big hit with a cover version of Shocking Blue's Venus. Her next song, You're My Love, was also popular. Five of her songs (Venus, You're My Love, Kanashiki Koibitotachi, Heart ni Hi wo Tsukete, and Hangyaku no Hero) were all Oricon top 10 hits.

During this time, Nagayama also performed in various dramas, such as the jidaigeki Sanbiki gi Kiru, Minipato yori Ai wo Komete, and Yūwaku.

Enka era
In 1993, she started a second career as an enka singer. She received three prizes for her first enka song Higurashi (蜩). Suterarete (捨てられて) also became famous.

Nagayama continues to play the shamisen in many of her songs. Notable songs with shamisen parts are Jonkara Onnabushi (じょんから女節) and Usoda to Itte (噓だといって).

She regularly presents enka programmes on Japanese TV. Nagayama has had at least one song appear on the NHK program, Minna no Uta. In 1993, she made her first appearance on the NHK New Year's Eve spectacular Kōhaku Uta Gassen. Since 1995, she has performed at Kōhaku every year.

Thanks for posting the songs, Bubu! emoticon

I listened to the songs today, and I must say Yoko has a very refreshing voice. My favorite was Kizuna (listening to that one right now, actually emoticon). I also liked Akai Yuki and Tsuki, but all of the songs really stood out.

I really like Nagama Yoko-san, her and Fuji Keiko are my favorite enka artists right now (and also Matsuzaka Keiko... aka Ikushima from Atsu-hime.). emoticon

I think I recognize Nagayama from last year and the 2006 Kouhaku Song Battle. I remember since I don't think I ever saw anyone play a shamisen standing before. I also remember liking the song she performed

You're correct, she's been a guest on Kouhaku 15 times since 1993.

Here is a clip of her performing one of her popular tunes, Jonkara Onnabushi with Sawada Katsuaki (澤田勝秋) and Sawada Katsunari (澤田勝成). (Not certain if they are related... see below)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoqjKX6oo_w

There is a style in Tsugaru Shamisen (a.k.a. Tsugaru-jamisen), called Sawada-ryu. (ryu is something like style or family) In any kind of Japanese traditional art form, there are various ryu. In this case, a great shamisen master, Sawada established a certain style of Tsugaru Shamisen and called it Sawada-ryu (Sawada-style). Anyone who masters this style is given a stage name Sawada. So the players above are both followers of Sawada style, but may or may not be actual brothers.

The Yoshida-Kyodai, (Yoshida Brothers) who are actual biological brothers, also play in the Tsugaru-jamisen style.

I really liked the song Jonkara Onnabushi, and while I was watching the video on YouTube of her performance with the Sawada-ryu, I found another version of the song that she performed at the 07-08 Kouhaku. Instead of the Sawada-ryu accompanying her though, she has a whole team of shamisen players. Pretty cool!

Nagayama Yoko Weds US Businessman

Image

April 07, 2009
Enka singer Nagayama Yoko (41) revealed on her blog yesterday that she has married an American businessman. She said that she and Skillhouse Staffing Solutions CEO Mark Smith (40) tied the knot on Monday morning. But she reassured fans that she plans to continue her music career. The two first met in September 2006 through the TBS Shimada Shinsuke-hosted variety show Sekai BariBari Value. The show sometimes features a segment with single Japanese female celebrities being matched up with wealthy foreign businessmen. Smith, who has been in Japan for 15 years and is a fan of enka, took a liking to Nagayama and they soon hit it off. Their marriage fits neatly under the recently popular heading of arafo-, abbreviated from around forty and referring to people in that age group. A popular enka star, Nagayama is a rarity in that she started out in 1984 as an idol singer. She switched to the more traditional enka in 1993. --Japan Entertainment News - April 2009

Nagayama Yoko, congratulations! emoticon

I'm glad that she isn't going to retire after getting married and will continue her singing career. In the past, a lot of Japanese celebrities would end their careers after getting married. But I'm glad Nagayama Yoko will continue her singing career and will remain in the public eye.
