Re: Can CJKDramas.com be "Upgraded" to a Different Discussion Baseline?

Just thought I'd chime in with my two cents as well.

Like bubu, I usually watch the Japanese programming, and I've always gone by creidesca's schedule, which is essentially watching the episodes at the pace that KXLA and KSCI air them. There have been instances where I have watched ahead in a drama, but I've never posted anything about those episodes until they've aired.

Now since the Korean Drama board is a lot larger, is there going to really be a successful way to regulate what is the "official" viewing schedule of the dramas? Its going to take a lot of time to figure out the common denominator of viewing, if there is one at all. I'm not sure if this has been done already, but maybe the night or day an episode airs, it could be listed in the topic, and those people who have already seen it or who watch it on their own could then post their thoughts about it.

Just my thoughts. emoticon Happy holidays everybody! Good to be back. emoticon

Re: Can CJKDramas.com be "Upgraded" to a Different Discussion Baseline?

For the past few weeks, I’ve had a little more time in trying out various streaming video format sites (mysoju, aznv.tv, veoh, etc….), . I will call it iTV for now ..….. I really like it. It’s uncut, great English subtitled, and commercial free. Site such as aznv.tv has good index to find the titles, and each episode is in one piece.( not in part-1, 2,3…) …. What ch-18 or ch-44 does to our dramas is inhumane!!! emoticon We seem to have spent a lot of times wondering about the cut scenes, rather than enjoying the whole drama, nothing but the whole drama!!

Some more thoughts on iTV …….. class blockquote

I think CJKDramas.com has a proven, stable, and successful system for discussing dramas currently being seen in the SoCal area—which is our official spoiler baseline. Until circumstances prove otherwise, I have to agree with the old adage, If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Absolutely!!…Hey, I still have my vinyl LPs, cassettes, and CDs……But I’m also fascinated by the ipod, itune, and iphone technology, So the iTV is very intriguing for me as well….. I am not sure how many members are on dial-up connection ……As more and more people getting the high speed Internet via cable or DSL, the streaming iTV will become more viable and a more attractive option…. class blockquote Something probably will have to change one of these days, but I'll leave that to the powers that be...... Yes, most likely this will be the case. We have , however, seen many more people on this forum who are watching iTV….I agree with the” play it by ear” philosophy….. .It’s no harm to think about it though…
. class blockquote I'm also curious what prompts you to think we might gain more members merely by people watching the dramas on mysoju.com instead of commercial TV? Aren't they already doing that? Has that, in itself, increased our membership? Maybe it has. In which case, there is no need to change our base schedule. iTV is not location sensitive, therefore anybody (globally ) can join,…as long as they have internet access…..
I’ve noticed that some of these iTV forums commented mostly on things like “please upload more episodes!”…Our forum members seem to be more mature, and comments are more analytical and interesting, This will attract more iTV viewers globally. Our assets are our current members who give comments like no other forums can…..

************************
Logistics: class blockquote
How are you going to decide which drama to watch and when?
How will it be decided how many episodes to watch per week?
How will you determine whether more members want to discuss a mysoju.com drama and fewer people are watching KXLA/LA-18?
Is not the K-drama Video Club essentially already doing this?
Is the Video Club model the one you would like implemented for all K-dramas?
First, we should create a new Forum/topics for iTV only... ., I’ve noticed that we have an AZN group for many dramas, I feel that they should be separated into a forum/ topics also..….So, we will have Forums/topics discussions like K-dramas, J-dramas, AZN dramas, iTV dramas....etc.

For the con- current shows……
Dramas like.YiSan, Cruel love. Pretty Insun, etc , we will be able to comment as soon as the episode becomes available on iTV.... Under this forum/topics,.the episodes might be ahead of the ch-44/ch-18 schedule(like Pretty Insun)… or behind, like "Here comes Ajummas ".
We need to let others know which site is the source. And anyboody can go there to view it before commenting. We don't have to be concerned with the deleted scenes at all.

For the dramas/movies that are already completed on those iTV sites…..

Here, we can have a video club format. Members are responsible for selecting dramas or movies. For example, we can watch 2 dramas and 1 movie-of-the-week each week..... This is very flexible..It should be decided by members who are responsible for commenting as well. The members can try to “persuade” other members to watch the pick….It’s no fun if somebody picks a drama, but no one wants to comment on it……I think we need at least 3-5 members in agreement before the final selection....

As far as the schedule goes, here is one example…For Feb, 2008:

Nomenclature:
DR1(#1)...Drama1, episode 1---(this can be Korean, Japanese, Chinese….anything with completed final episodes…)

KMV1-.Korean movie 1
JMV1….Japanese movie1
CMV….Chinese movie1

********************************************
……….....Week1……….Week2……....Week3……….Week4
Mon. ….DR1(#1)…..…DR1(#3)……...DR1(#5)……………..
Tues…..DR1(#2)…..…DR1(#4)……...DR1(#6)…………
Wed…..DR2(#1)……...etc…..
Thur…..DR2(#2)……...etc….
Fri……...KMV1……....….CMV1….....….…JMV1
Sat….…rest .
Sun…...rest

************************************************

In order for this to work successfully, I think initially members participation is important. .Each member is responsible for selecting at least one drama and also responsible for commenting......

I always feel that we are missing out on not watching SBS shows( Lovers is SBS) and movies, and this is a way for us to enjoy more excellent dramas and movies.

There is a risk of loosing dramas due to legal issues on these iTV sites…., but we can always replace with back-up dramas.

Oh, one more thing…..If you don’t want to watch shows on your computer monitor, you can hook it up to your big screen TV…I’m going to have it installed shortly..

Sorry for taking so long in answering this subject………..

Thanks for your comprehensive workup, Pandapop. class blockquote First, we should create a new Forum/topics for iTV only... ., I’ve noticed that we have an AZN group for many dramas, I feel that they should be separated into a forum/ topics also..….So, we will have Forums/topics discussions like K-dramas, J-dramas, AZN dramas, iTV dramas....etc.I believe there are technical limitations on the number of forums we can create. That's why we accommodated the AZN viewers in the K-Forum instead of creating an additional forum for them (which was my preference, but not workable).

Ah, I didn’t know about the limitation, nchristi. Just an observation….Some of the forums under “Community” were rarely visited( i.e. no new posting for over a year). Can they be lumped into one and thus, free up the forums for future forum categories?

Dear nchristi,

There don't seem to be too many opinions posted about all these ideas. For myself I like this site and the way the forums and threads are arranged. I have a simple brain and I would hate to see such complicated changes. I visit another site which is for a person and subject that I like but it is much more difficult to get into and follow all the different forums and threads.
I really can understand and use the way creidesca has set up this present arrangement and I would not really like it to be changed in any way.

This topic was opened in response to a request by a member who wished to discuss it. Consequently, it is only that—a discussion. If the board owner and those responsible for administering it see a need for change of any sort, they will do so. In the meantime, I don't believe there is anything more I can contribute to this discussion that is constructive or appropriate.

Can CJKDramas.com be "Upgraded" to a Different Discussion Baseline?

It's a very complicated issue and one that I have been familiar with as many of us, and myself who only get AZN or DVDs or watch online are not in the same schedule as many in the southern california area only.

As someone who has been here almost two and half years, and while there's room for improvement I'm personally happy with the status quo for now. Having said that though I am not against many of the ideas suggested here, but in my opinion it might not be wise to divide threads too much as it could split up and divide discussions too much.

For the AZN viewers as nchristi mentioned in some cases we've created different topics if there is still an on-going discussion for the same series by southern california viewers. I'm happy with the change of policy that has been done to make this possible.

Perhaps internent viewers do deserve their own section or new thread for a given discussion but as has been suggested in this thread there has to be a unified source for that to first take place.

It's a very complex issue and certainly good that there are discussions on the matter taking place.

One other thing I do want to touch on - for me personally I am familiar with other K-Drama forums and there are plenty I visit for information here and there; but the thing that can not be replaced for me are the people here and the depth of discussions we've had in this forum. There is a personal and quiet sort of intimacy here that is prevalent and unique to this forum that I think makes this forum special and attractive for those looking for something out of the ordinary.

I find Soompi too big and too hectic and at times too superficial. It's a great source for news and information and synopsis but for actual in depth discussion, I have not really found anything there to hold my interest in that aspect. I simply have had so many great discussions here that I haven't elsewhere, on issues that range from emotions to psychology history to politics to production in K-Dramas. Sometimes it almost feels like it's back at school with literature and history analysis - well except it's about K-Dramas. I keep coming back here for more and will continue to do so. emoticon

Can CJKDramas.com be "Upgraded" to a Different Discussion Baseline?

Sometimes I'm in another state or country so I have been able to view dramas ahead KBS-LA and KSCI schedule for a while now. Because I enjoy the feedback from others, I always come to this forum. If I seen a drama I really enjoyed, I would look on one of the local stations to see where everyone is at and make my comments according to that episode.
KBS World has started airing commericals, so far they only air them in the beginning of the drama and maybe one or two at the half hour. This format can be an effective change for KBS-LA, if they change what time there dramas come on or end.
I will always come to this forum, it's like home.

Enjoyed your remarks, ScreenStyle, and we're always happy to have you come back "home." emoticon

Yes, the fact that KBS (in Korea) has begun adding commercials to their drama programming will improve our local situation here in the States.

For all these years, KBS has had commercial-free programming in Korea, itself. But now financial conditions are such that they need a new source of income—selling commercial time during the drama time slots. This was a very controversial, unpopular move with the viewers, but apparently they have gone forward with it.

The good news for us is that this will mean fewer deleted scenes here, as some of our commercials will fit in the commercial break time KBS is incorporating.

The bad news is that 60-70 minute long dramas will continue to be squeezed into ~45-minute time slots, requiring major editing whether or not KBS World cuts back their dramas to accommodate a few commercials of their own.

Nevertheless, I am grateful for what we do have and that we will be having a few less minutes of drama edited out.
