It takes some time to translate the stuff from its official website. I promise I'll answer your questions in the next few days.

There are 4 locales: Mr. Lu's House (2nd Mrs. Qiao's father's house), Qiao's house, Qiao's competitor's house (Da Shen-Tsang store), and Qiao's store in Bao-Tou City (where all the trading activities are going on and where the older brother Qiao's business failure originated).

Currently, 2nd Brother Qiao is at Bao-Tou City (with his friend, the peanut merchant) trying to beat his competition, which he managed to succeed with his wife's father's financial backing.

I'll explain more of the financial dealings later on today.

Qiao was going to agree to the divorce, but his sister-in-law (after questioning Miss Lu's maid) told Qiao Ze-Yong that he wouldn't have gotten the money off his father-in-law had Miss Lu didn't threaten her father with the sell of the jade cabbage. Ep. 13-20 summaries

第 13 集 Episode 13

Under everyone's anxious (and skeptical) eyes, Qiao Ze-Yong went ahead with his plans to defeat the competition. He spread rumors in Beijing (via the help of his wife and his wife's father) that the emperor is sending the troop to fight the border enemies. If that rumor was true, the imperial army would need lots of Gao Liang grains and hay to feed the army horses. At the same time, Qiao Ze-Yong is buying up all the Gao Liang grains and hay in Bao Tou city. This action made his competitor Da Shen-Shing a little worried. The Da Shen-Shing boss sent his manager to Beijing to find out whether the rumor was true, but he couldn't get a definitive answer either.

Qiao was using up all the money he brought to Bao Tou city, so he sent his bodyguard back to Chi County with a letter to his wife. As soon as Miss Lu saw her husband's letter, she went to her father immediately asking for $200,000 more sterling silver. Her father said "I can't lend you $200,000 because it's not enough to do what your husband want to achieve, I'll lend you $500,000 so he can rid of this competition once and for all." Miss Lu was so happy that she thanked her father profusely. With the new shipment of money, Qiao Ze-Yong continued with his plan.

Finally, the Da Shen Shing people took the bait and started to buy the Gao Liang Grains and hay as well. This time, Qiao told his manager to sell all the Gao Liang Grains and hay they have in the warehouse to the Da Shen Shing people. He told his manager not to let the Da Shen Shing people know that the grain and hay is from the Qiao warehouse. Soon, Da Shen Shing bought up all of Qiao's inventory and Qiao knew now Da Shen Shing was in the same predicament they were in and is about to go bankrupt.

第 14 集 Episode 14

達盛昌最終宣告失敗。經過與孫茂才等人一夜的爭論,喬致庸決定親自登門與達盛昌握手言和。 Da Shen Tsang store (Qiao's competitor) declared their loss to the Qiao store. But Qiao Ze-Yong and Sun Mao-Tsai (the peanut merchant) argued all night about whether to completely destroy Da Shen Tsang. Sun did not want Qiao to do so. He believed that Qiao should give Da Shen Tsang space to survive, even though Da Shen Tsang never gave Qiao any breathing room (they actually caused Qiao's financial woes. Finally, Qiao Ze-Yong decided to listen to his friend and went to Da Shen Tsang's boss and shook hands for friendship.

Qiao Ze-Yong basically went to Da Shen Tsang's boss (Mr. Chiu) and begged for his forgiveness. Qiao said his brother broke the family rule of trying to monopolize a sector of business. He wants to make peace with Mr. Chiu by buying back $100,000 worth of Gao Liang grains from Da Shen Tsang. Mr. Chiu was touched by Qiao's action, but asked what he wants in return. Qiao Ze-Yong said he wants in return the support he needed to put the rules of business back in order in Bao Tou City. Mr. Chiu said whatever Qiao does, he will support in the future.

While walking around the city, Qiao Ze-Yong came upon people complaining about the bad sesame seed oil from one of Qiao's stores. Qiao was peeved and went to the store and looked for the culprit. Apparently a few employees decided to add another kind of seed oil in the sesame oil mix, making this oil foul smelling. Qiao decided to close the oil store and fired all those involved. Then he posted notices all around town promising those customers who bought bad oil a refund, plus the right to purchase the good oil at discounted price. Then Qiao sold the spoiled oil at 10 cents a gallon for lighting. He then announced to all those who lined up to buy their oil that if anyone ever find a bad or counterfeit product in any of his stores, he'll refund 10 times the amount the customer paid. Qiao's announcement caused an uproar, especially amongst his employees (who disagreed with Qiao Ze-Yong claiming lowering of profit margins). But Mr. Chiu decided to follow Qiao's cue and announced similar policy regarding their products as well.

His general manager and other managers didn't like the way Qiao is doing business, so they threatened to quit. To their surprise, Qiao Ze-Yong accepted their resignation and elevated one of the lowly clerk to become the general manager.

Meanwhile, Qiao Ze-Yong instituted a way for his clerks to stay in his stores by letting them own a piece of his store. And at the same time, Qiao promised to take care of retired workers for life if they work for his store for 30 years or more.

They started to film this show in Shan Xi province June 2005. I think it took more than 6 months to complete. This show aired in China earlier this year.

thank you for your help. The actors are very good so I get the jest of things but all the key words and verbs escape me ...also is this some common tradition to give a piece of ones'hair to seal a bargain? "he cut off part of his pigtail and gave the hair to her as his guarantee to be a good husband" ? where does this come from?

In Qing (Ching) Dynasty, men's pigtails (or queues) are pretty sacred stuff. So for Qiao Ze-Yong to cut off a portion of his hair means something. I suppose he really had nothing he could give her to prove his sincerety. So for Qiao Ze-Yong to cut off part of his hair, he was trying to send a message to his wife. Needless to say, his action touched his new wife's heart and made her believe his sincerety at what he had promised her.

When the Manchurians took over China, they forced all men, especially Han men to don the pigtail-style hair. So by not wearing this hairstyle, the public will know you are a dissident. I guess one do not stay a dissident very long. But after China became a republic in 1911, men began to cut off their queues as a sign of overthrowing the old Manchurian regime in support of the new republic.

I found this in one of the websites after I googled "Qing Dynasty pigtail":

"One hairstyle you don't see on the streets of Beijing anymore is the Manchurian queue or pigtail, made famous by countless historical films set in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The pigtail was originally a symbol of subjugation, imposed by the conquering Manchus at the start of the Qing Dynasty. A long braid hanging down from the back of the head resembles a horse阺 tail and symbolized the speed and endurance of the animal that made the Qing conquest of China possible. The hairstyle consisted of a long braid at the back of the head, with a half-moon shape shaved into the hair above the forehead. Thick hair was fashionable, so the hirsutely-challenged added false hair and even entire false braids. Although the pigtail was initially an unwelcome imposition on Han Chinese men by the invaders, criminals and undesirables were forbidden to wear a ponytail so the style became a status symbol. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, resurgent Han nationalism made cutting off the ponytail a patriotic duty representing the casting off of the yoke of the Manchu Empire."
