(Qiao Jia Da Yuen) Qiao's Grand Courtyard

喬家大院's literal meaning is Qiao (pronounced Chao) Family's Family Courtyard. This show will replace Moments in Peking. I suspect it will begin airing next week. It has 45 episodes.

If you watched Moments in Peking, the Tseng family also has a Grand Courtyard. In the old days, 3 or 4 generations lived together, so the Grand Courtyard is where all branches of the family congregate. Only big well-to-do families have big courtyards.

ChinaTV has a website, but my browser wasn't letting me see it. It may work for you:

http://www.chinatv.com.tw/event/2006/qiaojia/

CTITV also has a website on this show:

Yesasia's link:

Description on Yesasia:

Qiao's Grand Courtyard won the Best Drama Award at the 1st Seoul Drama Awards.

A 45-episode series by the Chinese Central Television, this drama follows the extraordinary life of Qiao Zhi-rong, a real-life businessman in Chinese history. Qiao grows up in a traditional family where he has been taught all the virtues such as fairness, righteousness, diligence, etc. As opposed to most merchants of his time who earns a fortune by cheating others, Qiao more often than not wins over his dishonest competitors by sticking to his virtuous way of doing business. However, while his business is growing steadily, Qiao needs to face a greater enemy - social and political unrest during the late Qing dynasty. With his wisdom, not only has Qiao tided through the turbulence, but has also brought into China revolutionary economic concepts.

LittoShorty, I hope so but I feel probably not. I will probably watch anyway though. I love the quality of the Chinese Dramas.

(Qiao Jia Da Yuen) Qiao's Grand Courtyard

No English subtitles.

Here are episode summaries of Ep. 1- Ep. 5 in Chinese. I'll translate them into English.

Episode 1

At the beginning of Xiánfēng 咸豐年Year (1850-1861), the second son of Shan-Xi province's Qiao Family (from Qiao Family Fort), Qiao Ze-Yong, said goodbye to his ailing older brother (Qiao Ze-Guang)and headed for the National Exam to be held at the City of Tai Yuan. On the way, Ze-Yong picked up his girlfriend (Jian Shuei-Ying), also a cousin, from her home and went to City of Tai Yuan for some fun and relaxation the day before the exam. At a show, Qiao Ze-Yong met a poor student, Sun Mao-Tsai, who was selling peanuts, and a rich girl Lu Yu-Ying (who happened to dress up like a boy). Qiao impressed Lu with his behavior. Both Sun and Qiao were planning to take the National Exam.

Episode 2
Qiao Ze-Guang dies and the finances of the Qiao family is not good because of several bad investment deals that Qiao Ze-Guang had done before he died. His wife had no choice but to call back Qiao Ze-Yong from writing his exam so he can take over the family business. Qiao's forth brother returned home to demand debt payment.

Episode 3
The Cho, Suei, and Yuen families secretly conspired to takeover the Qiao's stores and Qiao's family home. Qiao Ze-Yong had no choice but to agree to takeover the troubled family business. He used his brother's funeral to drag out the time so he can come up with a plan. [NOTE: Chinese creditors don't like to go into houses with recent deaths.] The oldest brother's wife wanted Qiao Ze-Yong to marry the rich Miss Lu so they can resolve the immediate cash flow problem. At the same time, many matchmakers have come to the Jiang family to talk about potential marriages for Jiang Shuei-Ying to a wealthy family. Because Jiang's father do not like the relationship between his daughter and Qiao Ze-Yong, he agreed to the marriage set up by the matchmaker.

Episode 4
The Qiao family held a huge funeral for the oldest brother. Qiao Ze-Yong and Jiang Shuei-Ying met up secretly. The next morning, Qiao Ze-Yong went to the Lu Family and requested help for emergency funds. Miss Lu recognized Qiao as the man who impressed her in the first episode and was smittened.

[this part was not aired on 11/8]

Another merchant schemed with local hoodlums to put the Qiao business into more trouble.

Episode 5

When Qiao Ze-Yong got together all the men in his family to fight the hoodlums, his friend Sun Mao-Tsai suddenly came for a visit. The two of them figured out a plan to use the old Qiao family home as the collateral. At the same time, Qiao went to a private security firm to ask for help with his sincerety. As expected, a few days later, the hoodlum and his men showed up.

(Qiao Jia Da Yuen) Qiao's Grand Courtyard

I am having trouble following this one. I may just wait until the next show. It seems pretty good but it also seems like one where I will need English Subtitles

(Qiao Jia Da Yuen) Qiao's Grand Courtyard

It is difficult to follow even when I'm fluent in Chinese. I have to read the Chinese subtitles to understand what the actors are saying. At least the Chinese subtitles are in traditional characters (not simplified characters). They all spoke Mandarin, but there are word usages that are not common in modern Chinese usage. I'm not sure whether the dialogue is native to 19th century China or whether it's more for local mainland Chinese ears.

I can't believe the Koreans voted this show as its top show at its Drama Award. There were many Korean dramas last year that easily surpassed this drama. Granted, the plot of Moments In Peking was a little ridiculous at times, but the production value of this drama and Moments in Peking was about the same.

I also find the story dragging a bit. Even Paris Sonata was more riveting. In terms of historical dramas, the Chinese medical examiner drama (the drama that aired before Moments In Peking) was better than this drama.

This show would have been difficult to do E-sub. They would need to add a lot of notations.

(Qiao Jia Da Yuen) Qiao's Grand Courtyard

I believe this show was recently repeated on CCTV-1. With so many p2ptv players out there, there are tons of soaps available although the big gotcha is that the quality is not so great and there is a huge time difference.

Anyway, my question is where does KSCI normally get their dramas? I asked because there are so plenty of bad shows on CCTV-1 that I am surprised they selected something from that network. Perhaps it is a cost or licensing issue? Could it be that the big networks like TVB and ATV programs are too expensive and/or they would rather keep the shows to show to their own cable or satellite subscribers? Of course, I could be completely wrong as I do not pay much attention to KSCI anymore.

(Qiao Jia Da Yuen) Qiao's Grand Courtyard

I really have no idea how KSCI/LA18 decides which drama to air in its noon and 7pm timeslot. I suspect there is a list of dramas and the price is within their range. Also, I'm sure the sponsors such as AKAI rice and all those calcium/fiber pills have a say in which shows they want to see aired. There is a recent trend towards chinese made historical dramas because older people tend to watch these shows. These dramas are really a platform for advertisers to sell their products. So I doubt they'll have many Idol dramas because the target audience would be too young to buy Akai rice or those non-FDA approved Vitamin supplements (actually, vitamins are outside FDA jurisdiction).

Shoot, they pre-empted the show for Armenian fundraiser. I was hoping to watch it after a boring Thanksgiving dinner.
