Re: Movie: さとうきび畑の唄 (The Song of a Sugarcane Field)

I'm late on this topic and yeah, I did see the movie. I cried and so did a friend of mine. The part I cried the most on was when the american forces shot that one family's son. I forgot who he was. It was so brutal that my jaw had dropped.

If i'm not mistaken, that essay contest is still going on. I thought it ended in september..

Re: J-Movie: さとうきび畑の唄 (The Song of a Sugarcane Field)

I thought the essay contest ended in January. :O

Yes, that whole movie was sad. The brutality of the Americans' on Okinawa was in itself disgusting. And not onlyt he Americans', the Japanese. The Japanese treated the Okinawans like dogs during the Militaristic Era, and as most people don't know, the Ryukyu Kingdom (Okinawa) was a seperate country prior to 1879, when the royal line was killed off, and it was annexed to Japan.

^wow! I had no idea that Okinawa was a seperate country. I also didn't have any idea that the people of Okinawa were treated like that.

no, the contest ends on the 20th of this month. The website for the movie had said so.

Yes. Okinawa and its surrounding islands were known as the Ryukyu Islands. Because they were situated between the Chinese Empire and Japan, they had to pay tribute to the emperors of Beijing AND Kyoto. But their trade flourished, and not only did Ryukyu traders go to China and Japan, yet also to Southeast Asia.

In 1609, Japan invaded Okinawa. From then on, not only did Okinawa have to pay tribute to China, but also to Japan, except not to Kyoto, this time to the Choshu clan in Satsuma (from Shinshengumi). The imperial house, led by the Sho Dynasty, continued to rule until 1879, when Japan conquered Okinawa, annexed it, and began a brutal occupation until 1945, when the Americans invaded and Naha was bombed. Then, Okinawa was an American colony until 1972, when it was returned to Japan.

Today, Okinawa has to bear the brunt of American military presence in Japan.

I saw the last part. It was in English with Japanese subtitles, or at least the parts with the girl and boy speaking.

Last week's [Yoshitsune] episode ran only 40 minutes after removing the commercials So if it keeps going at that rate, in a couple of weeks we'll be watching 45 minutes of commercials and 15 minutes of Yosh*tsune....
The previous two episodes were followed by the Okinawa Diary special, featuring the winners of the essay contest visiting Okinawa. In the Okinawa segments, the parts in Japanese had English subtitles and the parts in English had Japanese subtitles. In the studio interview segments, the female contest winner's responses were in English with Japanese subtitles. The male contest winner and interviewer spoke in Japanese with no subs.

It was pretty interesting. Worth checking out next time they air it.

They aired that in September - I remember. I guess they're re-airing it.
