Re: K-Star (Actor): Jo In-sung

I surely do! I bought my Spring Days DVDset from Amazon (new) and expected that it was a legitimate, first rate version. What a surprise my Hong Kong set was! emoticon That was my first experience with Jo In-sung and he was about the weirdest guy I had ever seen in my life. Strangely weird and interesting all at the same time. I could never quite decide whether to laugh or cry at him!

Then halfway through, something just clicked in my view of him. I realized he wouldn't be acting so weird if that wasn't what the director wanted. Then I began to think it would probably take some talent to be so "weird." LOL! From that moment on, I was rather fascinated by his character and really enjoyed him.

"Dirty Carnival" is getting some rave reviews, especially his acting. I really am torn about seeing it because it is also reviewed as being unusually graphic in violence. I can't tolerate that. Although I might rent it and keep my trusty remote control in hand, with thumb poised over the mute button. Since it will have to have e-subs, whoever watches with me will still be able to read the dialog without sound, while I keep my eyes tightly shut!

I agree with your comments on his personal life, masahiko. There's something about his life story and what comes through in his personality in interviews that has really touched my heart. I find myself having a special feeling wishing for his success and happiness in life. Aja Aja Fighting, Jo In-sung!

Film "Dirty Carnival" Draws 2 Million Viewers

 Image

The film "Dirty Carnival," starring Cho In-sung, has drawn two million viewers just a month after its opening.

The movie's promotion company said July 19 that "Dirty Carnival," which opened June 15 just in time for the World Cup fervor, has made a successful run in the domestic box-office on par with Hollywood blockbusters.

The movie's success can be attributed to the excellent directing skills of its director, Yoo Ha, as well as the superior acting of its cast, which includes Cho, Jin Koo, Nam Kung-min, Chun Ho-jin and Lee Bo-young. Despite a somewhat heavy plot for a summer movie, "Dirty Carnival" captivated viewers' hearts with its heartfelt story about real life. Adding to the movie's popularity was an active promotion campaign that lasted for three weeks after the film's opening. Cho in particular received rave reviews for his true-to-life portrayal of a gangster.

With few successful domestic movies opening in the first half of the year, with the exception of "King and the Clown," the success of "Dirty Carnival" is even more noteworthy. As it continues to draw more viewers, attention is now focused on whether the movie will set another record.

Re: K-Star (Actor): Jo In-sung (Cho In-sung)

On the advice of friends, I watched the kdrama "Something Happened in Bali" / "What Happened in Bali" (it has various other titles), which apparently never played in So. Cal. (I think it came out in 2004 in Korea; 20 episodes). I'm pretty blown away by it! I think I'll be milling over the ending for a few weeks. Jo In Sung is pretty amazing (he won a Baeksang Best Actor award), as are all the principals -- Ha Ji Won, So Ji Sub and Park Yae Jin. I thought the series had the best acting, the best chemistry and the truest character development of any kdrama I've ever seen (the script got an award, too). And two pretty hunky leading men, to boot (my vote is for JIS, but SJS has a pretty stauch fan club -- I will say, they insist on doing weird things to the guys' hair!). Warning, though -- this is not a fairy tale -- it's incredibly intense! If you're looking for something to rent, and you're feeling a little dark, I highly recommend it!

Re: K-Star (Actor): Jo In-sung (Cho In-sung)

Thanks for the recommendation, Maybe1. I will definitely look into this drama. Goes to show how important the input is from our members such as you! I always assumed this was just another one of those light-weight, teenager summer romance dramas and would never have given it a second look. (Shame on me!)

Wow, what a cast. I'm also a big fan of So Ji Sub. Love his acting. Though he isn't a classically handsome guy (IMO), he has a charisma about him that makes him at least an 11.5 in my book. Let me amend that! His swimmer's physique is totally beautiful! Not to mention he has the most beguiling hand movements I've seen in a long time.

I recently saw Jo In-sung on a game show and when he talked extemporaneously I realized that it is his natural personality and mannerisms that I thought were unusual dramatic affectations in his dramatic roles. Now I'll have to watch Spring Days all over again just to enjoy watching his natural personality bubble up. What a sweet pleasant person he seemed on the talk show, too.

Re: K-Star (Actor): Jo In-sung (Cho In-sung)

Recently purchased "Dirty Carnival" from DVDKorea.

In the KDrama thread regarding dramas that members did not like, I remember writing that SIS was rather weird in "Spring Days", which was for me, a very strange drama.

However, over the weeks that followed, reading the wonderful reviews for the movie mentioned above, and the wonderful reviews for SIS's acting ability in the movie, I must say he's incredible in "Dirty Carnival." This is not a "pretty" movie, but he goes beyond the call of acting duty as it were, in a truly nitty-gritty role, that of a gangster. IMHO, he should receive an award for this role...he was over the top in a remarkable way!

I have not been able to find "It Happened in Bali", but would love to purchase it also, not only for SIS, but for JIS!

Yesasia has it ( http://us.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/code-k/section-videos/pid-1004042342/ ) -- $75 and free shipping. If anyone has bought this version, I'd love to know how the subtitles are. I don't usually buy these shows, but I'm considering this one. Meanwhile, for those who haven't seen it, I don't know how long it will last, but all 20 episodes are currently on "youtube.com", subtitled and all -- although they're in 10-minute segments. class blockquote nchristi wrote:

The title seems a little breezy (you'll look at it differently afterward), and it starts out seeming like just another romantic "rectangle", but again, it's not light -- not at all! Episodes 1 and 2 perk along like your usual romantic dramedy, but by Episode 3, when you start learning things about the characters' backgrounds and getting glimpses into their characters, you begin to realize "you're not in Kansas any more!"

This really makes me want to see "Dirty Carnival" even more. I will be checking the local Korean video stores for it over the weekend!

I agree, Bali is definitely not for those looking for a light romance, but it is very good. I bought a copy released by YA. Need to review it again for the condition of the subs. It came with a couple of Bali book marks.

Thank you Maybel and Tangpriest for the suggestions.

I have purchased a few things from Yes Asia, some were good, some not so great, but will look into the "Bali" DVD there. As far as subs, they are excellent when purchasing items from YesAsia. Have heard some excellent comments about the drama.
