So the Chinese use the word for bright red while the Japanese use the word for scarlet? They both use both words. They're just different shades of red (with some different connotations). However, if you ask someone to translate red into Chinese, xml:lang zh-TW 紅 will likely be used. Ask someone to translate red into Japanese and xml:lang ja-JP 赤 will likely be used. (And bright red, like the red of the Communist flag, is xml:lang zh-TW 赤, so that shade of red has some association with Communism in both languages.)

Interesting, ccwf - I suppose members of the Communist Party in Japan might use the same word that the Chinese use, hehe..

Can someone explain the onnagata? I'm confused.

Onnagata were male kabuki actors which played the parts of women in which women were not allowed to perform. Think of the onnagata being comparable to the Shakespearean actors who played the roles of women. (Twelfth Night, anybody?)

One of the highlights for me was finally seeing Gackt perform. Very interesting. I was impressed too by the performance of the Shinsengumi theme. The first thing that struck me was how well the soloist did in the humming portion--which can actually be more difficult to perform well than open voice singing. And, of course, there's Mikawa, Kenichi, a performer of whom I never tire.classblockquotehyunkyu wrote:

You could tell he's a strong singer (not all the performers were) because amongst the pop singers, only the strong singers dared to just stand or sit there and sing, their voices nearly naked, without an elaborate stage production and gyrating dancers to distract from their singing flaws.
I still haven't watched the end yet. Anybody I should keep a special eye out for?
Also, any requests before I delete this show? I'll post stuff from Morning Musume, Gackt, John Ken Nuzzo, Mikawa Kenichi, Ayaka Hirahara, and maybe Kishidan and some others.
