I think it's totally cool to talk about sports (including the Lakers) in General Discussion as long as you have a topic about it specified. For one thing, there is an increasing number of prominent Asian athletes in several sports.
Congratulations to Kobayashi Takeru, who shattered his world record by eating 53.5 Nathan's hot dogs in twelve minutes today (shown live on ESPN, reportedly).

Re: Lakers (湖人) [was: 姚明 (Yao Ming)]
Lakers preseason begins today!
19:30 Lakers vs. Seattle @Anaheim KCAL/KLAC/KWKW, preceded by a pre-game show
Lakers will experiment with Lamar Odom playing power forward, with a hurry-up offense instead of the triangle-like offense of the past few seasons.
Probable starters: Chris Mihm, Lamar Odom, Brian Grant, Kobe Bryant, and Chucky Atkins.

Have some doubts of Odom playing PF today. Butler has a thigh injury and is day-to-day and might not play tonight. So they might just go with Odom at SF. Should be interesting though. I am probably gonna miss the entire game but I'm going to try and capture it to watch it later.

Re: Lakers (湖人)
The NBA launched http://china.nba.com/ last season. Forum members might be interested in the xml:lang zh-CN 湖人 (Lakers), xml:lang zh-CN 国王 (Kings), xml:lang zh-CN 勇士 (Warriors), and xml:lang zh-CN 快船 (Clippers) pages there. Included are names given current and some past players and coaches in (Simplified) Chinese as well as other important terms (e.g, xml:lang zh-CN 表演时刻 for Showtime).

Re: Lakers (湖人) [was: 姚明 (Yao Ming)]
I've been able to watch only small portions of a couple Lakers games recently, but it really leapt out at me the difference in team "personality." At least it seemed so. Is Kobe the official team leader now? (Is it me, or is he hotdogging it just a little bit more than he used to?)
I'd like to hear everybody's observations on how this new team is developing and where it's going. And, what do you think of Brian Grant?

Yes, he is. Reportedly, he now actually hangs out with team members sometimes and even took them fishing. 引用 (quote): And, what do you think of Brian Grant?
I've always been impressed with Brian Grant as a person and a professional. However, basketball-wise, he's often been made to play center, a role for which he's terribly undersized.

Re: Lakers (湖人) [was: 姚明 (Yao Ming)]
I'm going to have to read up on Brian Grant. I know little of him except that I used to hear on-air commentators speak of him (his play) always in negatives; while, on the other hand, I find myself watching only him on the court (regardless of which franchise he plays for). I was reminded of this again during the last Laker game, realizing I was no longer following the game, only Brian Grant.
I always sensed something in Bernie Williams, too. (NY Yankees) I had to laugh when I learned he is a quiet mannered, intellectual type who is quite an accomplished acoustical guitarist (classical and jazz), having his own radio program in NYC.
As for Kobe, I wonder if it was Shaq's or Phil's influence that restrained Kobe's attitude in the past. It's going to be interesting watching how all this unfolds in their team play and where they'll fall out in the contender ranks.

Lakers Opening Night vs Nuggets
All these pictures are from one play. Kobe turned the ball over. The Nuggets threw the ball ahead to Andre Miller, who is all alone. Kobe runs past three players, chases down Miller, and blocks the shot. Apologies for the quality of some of the pictures—interlacing and MPEG compression wreak havoc with fastbreaks. classblockquoteFrom Dime Magazine:
A shaved and svelte Kobe dropped 25 points on the Nugs in the Lakers surprisingly easy victory, but most of them weren't scored until the game was out of reach. While we still believe he'll lead the league in points, it was his unselfishness and leadership that allowed the Lake Show to lead from start to finish. The play that stood out most was when Kobe turned the ball over on a stupid behind the back play but hustled back to block an Andre Miller layup in strikingly similar fashion to Tayshaun Prince's "Block Heard 'Round the World" on Reggie Miller.
It pumped up the crowd in the 4th quarter. Now that is how you lead by example and re-endear yourself to the fans simultaneously.

Lakers are now 3-4. Kobe had a MONSTER DUNK over Magic rookie Dwight Howard. I have a video link up as well as the previous play were he blocked Miller here:
