It is so sad to read of the passing of Akiyuki Nosaka this morning. I remember it was at (I guess) a BayCon in San Jose where a video from Japan of the anime was shown. Even without sub-titling and with a few hints from fellow Japanese (wantabe) speakers in the audience it was the most moving experience I had ever had with an anime. I would be a liar to say I merely had tears in my eyes by the end of the movie.
