Ethnic Crop Project ---creidesca needs help!

You guys, I have a project, which will be due next week (yea, I know, I should have asked this much earlier), but can you guys suggest some ethnic crops?

here's information on the project:

Poster Topic = an ethnic CROP. Try to be creative- show us something we
haven¹t seen before.

 -meaning not wheat

 -meaning not mainstream food

Required Parts of each poster:

*Plant Name (common name & scientific name)
*A Little Bit of Botany: - climate typeà arid / tropical forest / etc.
     - what type of plant is it? i.e. grass, tree, etcŠ
     - how is it grown? growth requirements

*Photos of plant: -At least 1 photo/drawing of the whole plant
-At least 1 photo/drawing of the part(s) of the plant
that is/are consumed
-Absolutely must cite source of every photograph/drawing
unless you produced them yourself.

*Information on how it¹s consumed: -how it¹s prepared

*Ethnobiological info examples would include: -cultural importance
-relationship between the plant and the people
-why is this crop grownŠ why is it important
           -additional medicinal uses??
-other ethnic usesŠ clothing, exhibition, etc.

Just for the record Cassava, Taro, Sweet Potato and other fairly common crops are not an option. You must look for a rather unknown crop so that we all can learn something new.

At the moment, I have these up my sleeves, but don't know if they're good, and I'd like to have some more suggestions:

gohyah (bitter gourd/melon)
gobo root (burdock)
Indian pennywort

Any suggestions?

Because my hobby is reading about things that kill you, the slower the better, may I suggest Cycads or Cycadaceae, as in Cycas circinalis or Cycas media.

Here are some links to get you started:

from Guide to Plant Relationships (allergies and intolerance)
引用 (quote):

most species contain a neurotoxic substance that produces progressive paralysis and Alzheimer's-like dementia

from Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney
引用 (quote):

Surrounded by confusion since its inception, this was described as the single constituent species when the great Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus established the genus Cycas in 1753. He had, however, based his description on a number of earlier works that in fact covered at least three distinct species as we now know them.

from NPR's All Things Considered, Monday Nov. 10, 2003 click AV link for story
引用 (quote):

Paul Alan Cox, bacteria growing in cycad seed...bats eat seeds...people eat bats...hundred times concentration each step

I would do more but I have a strict policy of "Will Write Your Paper for Food".

How about quinoa? Tastes pretty good, too.

I also have a little bit of gai-lan left in the fridge that I could photograph for you, although that might not be unusual enough.

It's not you it's me! Yes, it kills the islanders who eat it in new and novel ways thus generating interest among epidemiologists and toxicologists.

I wonder if I should start checking for bat recipies. Bat curry, now that sounds good!

to ccwf:
hehe =P I can't remember the last time I ate gai-lan--my mom's been on a real strict diet the past year and 1/2 so she hardly cooks ethnic dishes anymore =( I'm basically stuck eating frozen foods or stuff out of cans for dinner--pizza, chicken nuggets, fish fillet, tuna, sardines...most of these eaten w/ rice.

to minorityreport:
what other materials have you've read on things that kill you?

oh yes, I always wanted to know this...my family used to grow this type of "spinach"...well I guess it's "spinach" that when you boil it the water that you boil it in turns red/pink...I've seen red spinach and it doesn't look like it (from what I can recall)

nevermind...just found out it might be Chinese spinach
