What is the name of a Japanese style cuisine?

I'm looking for the name of a Japanese style cuisine that is popular
in hotsprings in Japan, probably the Kansai region too. The term in
Chinese characters is "Her Feng" (Peace Wind).

Can anyone help?

TIA.

xml:langja-JP和風 (xml:langja-JPclassromanizedwafuu)? In Japanese, that just means “Japanese-style”. xml:langja-JP often means “Japan ”in Japanese.

I knew you would be the one who can help me translate it.

Do you know the name of the style of Japanese cuisine that is popular at hotsprings and the Osaka area? Is it Kaseiki? Kamigata? Anyways, I have to find a traditional Japanese restaurant in LA that serves this type of food.

It's my MIL's 70th birthday in 3 weeks and I think she may enjoy this type of cuisine.

Anyone know?

TIA.

I asked Amy Tsuchida at the TiVo Community Forum, and she answered: classblockquoteKaiseki

Do you think Amy will be able to recommend a good Kaiseki restaurant in Los Angeles? emoticon

Probably not—she lives in Atlanta. She also wrote that there were no such restaurants there and hoped you would have luck finding one in Los Angeles.

My guess is that kai seki is not what you're looking for, in terms of hot springs food. I do have a friend who is from Osaka. She just left the states today and will be back in Osaka by tomorrow. I can check with her then. Kai seki is very high end food. It's incredibly beautiful, and very, very expensive (usually). Not what I would expect at an onsen. As for places in L.A., don't know of any as kai seki is really a speciality. You might try the New Otani Hotel in Little Tokyo and ask the concierge for suggestions. I did check on the kamigata and all I could find were references to a style of dance. If you find out more about osaka food, I'd love to hear about it. I really enjoy learning about all kinds of different food!

I always assumed that meals served at some ensen places are kaiseki because they look so beautiful. I guess it all depends on the ensen places one goes to.

I have been to Kappo Seafood in Gardena and their set menus are sort of kaiseki, but not as refined. It's expensive as expected. I was hoping to find similar Japanese restaurants in Los Angeles to try.

Tanqpriest, it'll be great if you can check with your friend from Osaka whether she knows of any good Japanese restaurants in LA.

Thanks for all your comments.

If there were any of these restaurants here - which I doubt there are - it would probably be a hole in the wall. I doubt you would fine any such restaurants in the main Japanese populated centres.

Merela

Haven't abandoned you. I just haven't heard back from my friend. There's a good chance she's gone to Hong Kong. I did a search earlier for kai seki in Los Angeles and this is what google gave me:

You might also try Yamashiro. It's in Hollywood and really is a beautiful place to have a special meal.

Good luck
