2008 Obon Festivals

2008 Obon Festivals

Obon (お盆, Obon) or just Bon (盆, Bon) is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the departed (deceased) spirits of one's ancestors. This Buddhist custom has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people return to ancestral family places and visit and clean their ancestors' graves. It has existed in Japan for more than 500 years and traditionally includes a dance, known as Bon-Odori (盆踊り)... Read more.

Thanks for posting the dates for the Obons. Hoping to hit one per weekend. We had to cut back due to the son's Saturday class

My neighbor reminded me of this event that is happening this weekend, she performs with a hula group every year. Sounds like fun... thought I'd post some details here.

Re: Events!

Thanks for the info, Bubu!

Its pretty cool that they are having a Polynesian summer festival! I know that in the Valley, they have an annual Hawaiian festival sometime in late May/early June, but I haven't had a chance to check it out yet. The timing of the Ho'olaule'a in Lawndale is great, since its held right during Obon season!

Thanks for the info, Vannessave! emoticon

I read that they're hosting the afterparty dinner at Oiwake Restaurant across the street. I've been there once, the food is really good! Oiwake is in the Japanese Village Plaza right above Miyakawa (its on the second floor) and next to Nijiya Market.
