ImaginAsian TV network

Looks like another group is going to beat the International Channel/KSCI/KTSF/KIKU group to form the first Asian programming network.

From their press release (see the link for the full text):
引用 (quote):

The fully advertiser supported ImaginAsian TV will offer American premieres of the best programs that Asia has to offer as well as original productions developed and produced by the network. The schedule will consist of feature films, drama series and sitcoms, news, variety and game shows, animation, children’s programs, music videos, sports, documentaries and more. All in-language programs will be subtitled by ImaginAsian TV’s in-house translators, and during prime-time, English-speaking hosts will introduce and provide commentary about the programs being shown.
[…]
Through its initial agreement with Equity Broadcasting Corp., ImaginAsian TV has gained access to more than 1.6 million households. The network’s initial carriage line-up includes KTVY (Channel 7) in Las Vegas, Nevada, KIMG (Channel 23) in Ventura, California and KKTU-DT in Denver, Colorado. Discussions are ongoing for several additional major markets.
[…]
ImaginAsian TV has signed multi-volume programming deals with such prominent Asian television companies as China Movie Channel (CCTV 6 – one of the top 2 channels in China), TV Asahi (one of the highest-rated networks in Japan), Vietnam Media Corp. (the largest distributor of top Vietnamese films and television programs), South Korea’s Game TV (a pioneer in online gaming series’), Asian News International (South Asia’s leading news agency), Balaji Telefilms Ltd. (India’s premier drama series producer) and many other leading film and television production and distribution companies.

Mentioned elsewhere on their web site is that the network should be available on basic cable but not DISH nor DirecTV.

Re: ImaginAsian TV network set for August launch

Well, that's good news: the more exposure Americans get to Asian broadcasting, the more American fans we’ll have.

Minor question, though: they say that Las Vegas KTVY channel 7 is going to be carrying these broadcasts? That can't be right: channel 7 is reserved by the Las Vegas CBS affiliate KLAS (for digital broadcasts).

There is a KTVY in LV, but it's on channel 63. That's probably what they mean. Right now, I hear it broadcasts mostly religious programming and infomercials. Most likely, ImaginAsian TV will purchase blocks of time on that station, just as KTE, UTB, and AHC do here in Los Angeles.

Regardless, it’s terrific to hear about ImaginAsian's arrival. Thanks again, ccwf, for your heads-up.

The press release says it will be a 24-hour network (although I suppose affiliates might not carry the network's programming all day).

Re: ImaginAsian TV network set for August launch

Just a gripe: With Los Angeles being America’s second biggest broadcast market, and with Los Angeles likely having America’s biggest Asian-American population (outside of Hawaii) how come Los Angeles doesn’t have even one full-time Asian TV station??? We must have two dozen TV stations here; 5 or 6 of which are all-Spanish. Heck, Chicago even has its own full-time all-Korean station, and their Korean-American population base can’t possibly be bigger than L.A.’s.

I see ImaginAsian TV is supposed to be setting up in Ventura, on KIMG channel 23, but I checked and all I get on 23 is snow. Do any of you (who might live closer to L.A. then me) get channel 23?

This "ImaginAsian TV" thing could be wonderful news for Los Angeles area C/J/K drama fans – provided us L.A. people actually get to see it happen!

I know this might be off topic, but I did not know where else to ask this...
I used to like watching sumo during the tournament times on KSCI... does anyone know if it's still on... if so when and where?

Re: ImaginAsian TV network set for August launch

Yes, I remember that! Wasn’t it a half-hour show that aired on Channel 18 about 11:30 pm called “Sumo Digest”? I think it was produced by a company called “Dynamic Sports,” but so far as I know it’s been off the air for a few years now.

NHK used to broadcast Sumo to America via satellite. It was really terrific; it was broadcast live from Japan, and it was way longer than the Sumo Digest show (NHK’s broadcast ran 1 ½ to 2 hours nightly, whenever tournaments were underway). It was also bilingual: you could select between Japanese or English commentary. We all used to watch it when I worked graveyard shift at DirecTV. But that was a few years ago. I don’t know if NHK still does this.

I’ve heard that “Japan TV” shows Sumo, but (unless you live in a predominantly Japanese-American community) hardly any cable systems carry it. I think it’s available via satellite dish (by Dish Network, but not, surprisingly, by DirecTV) but I’m not sure if they actually broadcast Sumo.

Sumo is one of those sports that Americans laugh at and ridicule until they watch it a few times. Then even we Americans start to get hooked. One evening at DirecTV, they had the Playboy channel running on the main screen when somebody shouted, “Hey, Sumo’s on!” Everybody dropped what they were doing and ran to watch Sumo. The Playboy channel was completely ignored!

Mikey, you are so right! I used to watch that same half-hour show and it was trippy. I was fascinated not only by the sport itself but also by all the Japanese tradition and symbolism that must have been rife in the clothes, actions, mannerisms of the wrestlers and the referee (?), too. All a mystery to me. (One of those situations where you suddenly realize that "you don't know what you don't know." emoticon )

The other evening I saw a commercial for (I guess) an American Sumo event in Southern California (?) and I immediately thought of how I missed seeing those authentically Japanese matches a few years back. I, too, wish we had that programming here. (sigh)

Re: ImaginAsian TV network set for August launch

Thanks Mikey,
You answered my question... I didn't think it was on anymore, but I went to a Japanese video rental store and the owner said that it was on t.v. at 11:30 during the tournaments... a.k.a Sumo Digest, I guess he was wrong.
Man, I do miss sumo... I was hooked when I saw it in Japan and even subscribed to the Sumo Digest magazine... but since it hasn't been airing I don't even know who the wrestlers are.
Wish they would bring it back.
nchristi,
I saw the same sumo program... that's what made me think about it again.
Thanks guys,
sorry to get off track... back to Asian TV.
