Wow. I guess that pretty much will end K-dramas getting legally downloaded online. I can't believe Youtube removed everything.

China has been expressing concerns over an array of Korean TV networks' production of big-budget historical dramas set in the Koguryo Kingdom (37 B.C. - A.D. 668)—one of three Kingdoms of ancient Korea.

The Chinese government has denied access to shoot some of the important battle scenes in their country to producers of "Yongaesomun'' by SBS and KBS's "Taejoyong,'' which center on portraying leaders' patriotic deeds and territorial victories set in the Koguryo Kingdom.

From mid-last year, the two dramas planned to shoot the most dramatic war scenes such as the famous battle of An Shi Fort in 644 in which the Koguryo army beat a Chinese army numbering more than 300,000 led by Tai Zong, Emperor of the Tang.

"When we asked last year to shoot in China, we thought there would not be much of a problem. However, as they began to realize that the theme of our drama was about restoring the lost history of Koguryo, they changed their attitudes and became uncooperative over the shooting,'' said Lee Jong-han, a producer of "Yongaesomun.'' "As shooting in China is not available, we are currently expanding on our current production set in Munkyong, North Kyongsang Province.''

According to officials of domestic TV networks that participated in the 2006 Shanghai TV Festival (STVF), which ended on June 21, Chinese TV officials expressed their embarrassment and displeasure over Korea's aggressive production and promotion of Koguryo-featuring TV dramas.

"If China's attitude continues, this could lead to spread of anti-hallyu. China has already dramatically decreased the number of imported Korean dramas,'' said an official from the Korean Broadcasting Institute. "Korea's major TV networks should approach the Chinese market carefully, aware of its economic as well as political impact.''

At a press conference to announce the start of telecasting for "Yongaesomun'' early next month, writer Lee Hwan-kyung made it clear that the aim of the drama was to counter Chinese attempts to incorporate the history of the ancient kingdom into that of their own country.

"I felt frustrated by the Korean government's inactive response toward the Chinese's distorted historical viewpoint over Koguryo. Through this drama, I hope to change people's mind and tackle China's unreasonable claims over Koguryo,'' said Lee.

Meanwhile, Choi Wan-kyu, writer of the popular MBC drama "Chumong'' said that nationalism is not the main focus of his work. The 60-episode drama depicting the founding myth of the ancient Kingdom has been enjoying the highest viewer-ship among other dramas in the same time slot since May.

SBS's historical drama "Yongaesomun'' is about the heroic general of the Koguryo Kingdom who successfully defeated the Chinese army. KBS's "Taejoyong'' depicts the founding process of the Palhae Kingdom led by Taejoyong, a general from the Koguryo Kingdom. The Palhae Kingdom (698-926) controlled much of what is now northern China. The dramas will air in July and August, respectively.

Kim Jong-hak Production is in the process of making the 20-episode drama "Taewangsashingi,'' which deals with the dynamic history of the Koguryo Kingdom, from its founding to the achievements of King Kwanggaeto, who expanded the territory to its largest size during his reign. The production is aiming to air later this year.

Experts have said such a boom of Koguryo-related dramas reflects people's increased interest toward the kingdom—an interest resulting from a territorial dispute sparked two years ago between Korea and China over the Koguryo Kingdom which, at one point, dominated the northern part of the Korean Peninsula and much of what is Manchuria in today's modern China.

Korean Broadcasts to Be Exported to Eastern Europe

Eastern Europe will become the next beachhead for Korean broadcasts including dramas and documentaries.

The Korean Broadcasting Commission(KBC) and the Budapest branch of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency have decided to encourage the exports of Korean broadcasts to Central and Eastern European countries. The decision came based on the results of the DISCOP 2006, an annual fair for televised programs, which was held from June 22 to 24 in Budapest, Hungary

At the DISCOP 2006, some 200 Korean broadcasting programs were presented, including dramas such as "Jumong," "Daejanggeum (A Jewel in the Palace)," "The God of the Sea" and "All In."

The Korean programs drew an unexpectedly positive response from buyers coming from Hungary, Poland, the Czech, Greece, Turkey, Ukraine, Russia and Israel. In particular, MBC concluded immediate contracts with a Ukrainian distributor regarding its drama "Damo" and two natural documentaries.

It is the first time such a large number of Korean broadcasting programs was introduced to Central and Eastern Europe.

No Korean dramas have been aired on broadcasters of EU countries including Hungary and Poland.

At the broadcasting fair, KBS and MBC negotiated with officials from Hungarian state-run broadcaster MTV and discussed details for exports of their dramas.

KBC official Baek Yoo-mi said, "We have thought it is not highly likely to create a Korean pop culture boom in Europe since we don't share common sentiments and culture with them. However, through the event, we became confident in the fact that we can succeed in the niche market of Central and Eastern European countries if we choose and export appropriate broadcasting products that have appeal to European viewers."

In a separate move, under the support of the Hungarian branch of Samsung Electronics, Hungary-based Korean trading firm Samma International is in negotiations with Hungarian broadcasters and distributors to export the drama "Winter Sonata" to the Eastern European country.

"Winter Sonata" will likely become the first Korean drama to be aired on an Eastern European broadcaster once a program schedule hitch is resolved.

Samma International chief Choi Gui-sun said, "Among Eastern European countries, Hungary is the country that shares sentiments similar to those of Korea. Therefore, it is possible the broadcasting of Korean dramas can create an overseas Korean pop culture boom in that country."

Image

Singer/actress Jang Na-ra has been recognized by world-famous Chinese actor Jackie Chan as a Korean star who has achieved success in China.

According to Jang's official website, Chan said at the “Jackie Chan and His Friends” event to which Jang was invited that Jang's success in China proves that there is nothing impossible in the world. Held on Saturday in Nanjing and drawing some 60,000 audience members, the event was a charity concert the Chinese actor organized with the help of his other famous star friends around the world to raise funds to build apartment buildings for the elderly living alone.

Jang performed two songs from her second Chinese album, “Kung Fu” and “Meng Feixiang,” and sang the title song of the film “The Myth,” in which Chan played a leading role, in a duet with Chan.

Jang has been gaining increasing popularity in China since she started to work there from 2004, when the hit drama “The Success Story of a Bright Girl” in which she starred received a positive response from Chinese viewers. Her first Chinese album released early last year has sold more than 1 million copies, and her latest second album is also enjoying increasing popularity.

In addition, Jang has been recognized as an actress since she played a leading role in the hit Chinese drama “Princess Diaoman,” which was aired across the world’s most populous country early this year. The Chinese press describes her as versatile as Kelly Chan and Karen Mok, the most outstanding female actresses and singers in China. Jang is currently touring China to promote her second album.

Meanwhile, China will see an apartment building named after her as Jackie Chan has announced his plan to name apartment buildings he builds for elderly people after stars who attended the “Jackie Chan and His Friends” event.

Korean Cinema to Open in Japan

Image

A cinema exclusively for Korean films will open in Shibuya, Japan, in mid-October.

The decision to establish the Korean movie theater came after the Korean Film Council and Japan's art theater Image Forum agreed to screen non-mainstream Korean films for 12 weeks a year.

According to the KFIC on Thursday, the two Korean films "The Barley Harvest Season" and "Possible Changes" were selected as the first works to be screened at the cinema.

Image Forum, which is in charge of promoting the Korean movies in Japan, will soon launch full-fledged marketing activities, including hosting a press preview in mid-July. Technical work needed for the Japanese release, such as dubbing and printing, has been completed.

KFIC official Park Deok-ho said that the two movies' directors and performers plan to visit Japan for promotional activities prior to the release.

"The Tale of Cinema" is speculated to be the next Korean film to be screened at the movie theater.

Wall Street Journal Hails Rock Star Shin Jung-hyun

Image

The U.S. media has recently published stories about Korean rock legend Shin Jung-hyun, 66, who has launched his last concert tour before his retirement.

The influential U.S. daily The Wall Street Journal introduced Shin on July 13 in an article entitled, “The Godfather of Korean Rock.”

Correspondent Mark Russel, who writes about South Korean pop culture for Billboard and Newsweek, wrote that Shin, who is building a new house in the Seoul suburbs, will retire soon and that he introduced rock-n-roll to South Korea in the 1960s and 70s.

Russel also added that Shin’s music was largely influenced by globally renowned rock stars Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane, thus promoting their contributions to music. The reporter also hailed Shin for writing numerous hit songs for Korean singers and becoming the godfather of Korean rock by fighting with the government for his favorite music genre.

It is the first time a veteran South Korean guitarist and rock singer was introduced in foreign media. So far, South Korean artists who have received the global media spotlight include young singers Rain and BoA, who were covered by top media outlets such as The New York Times, the New York Daily News, British broadcaster BBC, The Financial Times and Reuters.

Shin launched his last concert tour on July 15 in Incheon. Despite heavy rain, some 4,500 people came to hear the songs of the legendary singer, who debuted half a century ago. Beginning the concert with the song, “Woman in the Rain,” Shin also sang his hit songs “A Cup of Coffee,” “Spring Rain” and “Flower Petals,” showing off his impressive guitar playing skills.

Shin will tour large cities in September, with the final concert slated for October in Seoul.
