Re: Which J-Drama is your favorite, and why?

I created a Useful J-Drama Links thread with links to lists of dramas and other resources that might help refresh everyone's memories. For example, I forgot A Son of the Good Earth, which was a very good and interesting show. From NHK:
引用 (quote):

In 1995, NHK aired A Son of the Good Earth, a Japan-China co-production, to mark the 70th anniversary of broadcasting in Japan. The story is about a man who was brought up by a Chinese couple after being separated from his parents in the closing days of the Second World War. Following the turbulence of the Cultural Revolution, he joins a Japan-China joint venture project to construct an iron works and is unexpectedly reunited with his real father. The novel by Yamazaki Toyoko was adapted for television by Okazaki Sakae.Audiences were deeply moved by many powerful scenes and performances. There were endless requests for repeats and A Son of the Good Earth was shown on both satellite and terrestrial channels, achieving a maximum audience share of 20.3%, an extraordinary achievement in the multi-channel age. This production demonstrated that a strong storyline and good acting can continue to move people to tears, no matter how many times a program is shown.

Ccwf, thank you for providing the NHK synopsis of my favorite drama, as you have saved me from having to write one myself. emoticon

A Son of the Good Earth ran here on Asahi Homecast from April to July of 2002, and I was completely blown away by it. The cast, comprised of both Japanese and Chinese actors, is awesome, especially Takaya Kamikawa in the title role. He really makes you believe he's experienced the traumas his character lives through. I was shocked to learn this was his TV debut.

At first, the story looks like it could be dull and slow-moving, but if you give it a chance, you'll find that it is a riveting historical soap opera that offers an insightful, gut-wrenching look at a person's struggle to live a normal, happy life in the face of imperialist greed, war, racism, political chaos, and repressive government. I could go on and on about why I love this drama, but I will spare you and quit now.

When I have some more time, I will post some of my runner-up favorites.

Sorry, guys. I never saw Futtariko, but I did see Agri. My cable listings said that Agri was Futarikko, so I was mistaken. But I saw Agri and parts of the drama that followed for sure.

Well, my understanding is that 大地の子/大地之子 is based upon (a synthesis from) a book about the real lives of several hundred Japanese orphans left in China during WWII. The drama has a real power to it, perhaps derived from its basis in things that really happened to various people. It shows some of the dreadful conditions in China after the war, the sweeping influence of Communism (and its enormous paranoia), struggling towards modernization, difficulties with trying to live within both cultures (Communist/democratic as well as Chinese/Japanese), and many other little details that the drama does well.

I'd really like to see that drama, was it an NHK drama or something else? I'd like to see that.

It's shown now and then on NHK, but I don't believe it's an NHK production.

As I recall, "A Son of the Good Earth" was a joint Chinese/NHK production.

I have to say I'm among the minority who didn't really like it that much (and, as one with a huge interest in the Chinese “Cultural Revolution,” one would think that I would have just gobbled it up). I thought some of it was pretty good, but at other times it just seemed to drag on and on.

Like the part with the rusty bolts (for the new steel mill) arriving in China from Japan, and the Chinese demanding new bolts, and the Japanese saying the rust doesn't matter. Cultural differences between the two? Maybe, but it just seemed so much discussion over nothing.

Of course, as I said, many people just LOVED it – so who am I to complain?

Hiroshi, I think I’ve got it on tape; I can dub you a copy if you like. Let me know.

Wait, is this about the Nationalist period or the Cultural Revolution period? If its about the Cultural Rev. I don't wanna see it cause I hate Communist-era stuff, after seeing this one Chinese movie on it, it had me in tears. Is thsi a tearjerker?

It starts with the war, during the Nationalist period, and ends near the present day.
