Re: compulsive
Seinfeld and gang are compulsive lite. David Sedaris is grande compulsive frappuccino.

Re: Seinfeld reference
引用 (quote):

you don't see her until the close-up shot on our new couple just as they turn down the aisle. she's got a purse over her left arm that comes up when she throws her flower petals...

引用 (quote):

were the two men on the side with the lady or on the opposite side?

引用 (quote):

she sorta threw both hand up at the same time. and the two guys were on the opposite (screen right) side

Which reminded me of this exchange:
引用 (quote):

JERRY: What happened to your head when you got hit?

KRAMER: Well. uh, well my head went back and to the left

JERRY: Again

KRAMER: Back and to the left

JERRY: Back and to the left Back and to the left

ELAINE: So, what are you saying?

JERRY: I am saying that the spit could not have come from behind ... that there had to have been a second spitter behind the bushes on the gravelly road. If the spitter was behind you as you claimed that would have caused your head to pitch forward.

ELAINE: So the spit could have only come from the front and to the right.

JERRY: But that is not what they would have you believe.

NEWMAN: I'm leavin'. Jerry's a nut.

KRAMER: Wait, wait,

JERRY: The sad thing is we may never know the real truth.

I'm starting to believe compulsive is when you have to beat the dead horse...of a joke...the moment you get back...at 1:30AM.

P.S. In Hogwarts latin I think it's vivi, amori, regreti. (^-^)b

Re: J-drama: 恋文 (Koibumi) / Love Letter

Unreasonableness will save us. True, it will first get us into trouble, like when Etsuko kicks Shoichi out as she dies. And yes, it will get us into more problems when Shoichi runs amok after boozing. So how does unreasonableness save us? What do a plan hatched in desperation and a hoary old story have in common?

When Keisaku visits Etsuko he still yearns for Mikiko. Our hearts break as he glances at her empty bed. She notices and remembers for him what Mikiko said. He is touched that she would do that for him. And for us the scene ends.

Later Keisaku convinces Shoichi to return to Kyoko by revealing Etsuko's wish that he reunite. Keisaku, as the embodiment of unrealized love, is the perfect person to deliver this message. He notes that Shoichi had been unreasonable so far and now was not the time to suddenly gain respectability. He then does a completely unreasonable thing by firing him and making him return home showing that close friends make the worst bosses. The only problem left would be how to arrange a return.

As a framing device Shoichi's stints in the slammer are a little tidy though we come to forgive that and him. When we first meet him he is dissolute and we are rightly appalled. Little did we know how much it speaks of the good that's within him. His immaturity is really innocence. His testing the bonds of love affirm how strong they really are; stretching beyond pride and rejection into the afterlife. I have never heard such fondness for another's failings as when Kyoko relates to Suguru how she met his dad. And when the phone rang and she realized it was the police she knew he was coming home.

Poll: Action figure I really want after watching
A) Etsuko in a wheelchair with slippery arm rests
B) Shoichi in prison stripe pj's
C) Mikiko with little angel wings and a permanent marker
D) Single mother, Dispenser of Comfort, Fount of Forgiveness Kyoko

P.S. In an non-unreasonable world Koibumi would get an emmy for best ending credits.

Re: J-drama: 恋文 (Koibumi) / Love Letter

My favorite drama has come to an end... sigh.
This had it all... great acting, and great writing... loved the ending... it was wonderful how Kyoko tells Suguru how Shoichi proposed... and bingo, the best jpop song starts up and he steals the bike and takes it to the police station... it was awsome... and that's what Kyoko loved about him... and of course he had to say sorry, which brought big grins from both of them...
you know what the most amazing thing is? I was not looking forward to this drama at all... the actor who played Shoichi turned me off... an irresponsible drunk... yuck... and a the crazy actress from "First Love" stealing him away from my now favorite actress, Kyoko...
But even with all the negatives, the that plagued the first episode, I couldn't keep from watching it... and soon was hooked, as all of you were...
To be quite honest, I think this drama brought the best out of all of us... it made us think about our lives, it brought out creativity that I haven't seen on any other forum as this drama did... heck, it even was responsible for me putting up a website for my own artwork... it also got me hooked on Jpop...
I would personally like to thank all of you who contributed and put a lot of thought and effort into your reply's... I looked forward to read your posts everyday... some were hilarious, some thought provoking and deep... some artistic and poetic... and all contributed to what turned out to be the best forum I've been a part of...
I had no regrets watching and playing a small part of this forum with all of you...
Thanks again everyone.

Re: J-drama: 恋文 (Koibumi) / Love Letter

Koibumi left me in a state of emotional suspended animation. I had to put it on the closet shelf, close the door, and walk away for a while.

The weeks of Koibumi reminded me of immersion into a literature class--a passionate examination of a controversial, gut-wrenching work. As with all art, is there a definitive answer or only what we can bring to others or take away for ourselves as individuals?

I, too, wish to thank all who participated in this great forum. I have learned from each of you. What I’m most thankful for is that Koibumi and the forum made me step outside my comfort zone and yet again wrestle with mind-expanding difference.

Sumobobby, I read your post last night and awoke this morning with it on my mind, appreciating that it led me to a better place, put it all back into perspective. Re-grounded me. Like a good teacher on the final day of class, your personal comments pulled the subjective back to the objective, emphasizing the positives gained, leaving the class standing as a field of flowers and not as a battlefield strewn with unattended bodies.

Well, this student will take Koibumi off the shelf this summer and spend some time with him. Again. See you all next semester! emoticon

You mean the Beatles? emoticon emoticon ;)

There was a link to the lyrics and audio for “In My Life” back on page 13 with further discussion about the song in the pages before and after.

i feel the same say i did after the first episode of younger man - not at all interested. so i'll hang in there for a few weeks to see how it develops.

yes, i said that. how much I would have missed! how could i have imagined back then that the last person to talk to etsuko, to hold her hand as she lay dying, would be kyoko? this show was beautiful in that everyone was a hero for everyone else.

although the earlier poll question was another great one i don't think i can pick just one figure. in fact, i think i have to have a complete set of figures to remind me of the lessons i take away from koibumi:

- a suguru on my dresser carrying a full backpack, to remind me that the events of the day may be beyond my control, that people may betray me, but to keep my cool, shoulder the burdens up on my back, and keep plugging along;

- as a set (how else?) of mikiko and keisaku on my bathroom countertop (next to the hairspray and combs) to remind me that in trying to avoid pain you often wind up causing yourself more pain;

- a kyoko on my nightstand to remind me when i wake up in the morning and turn in at night to work to be strong for others, and to both love and forgive unconditionally;

- a shoichi in my entryway, sitting on a park bench with a scrunched up hat on his head tilted to one side and looking skyward, to remind me as i leave my home that today it might be necessary, and better, to do the unreasonable thing;

- and an etsuko sitting in her wheelchair looking beautiful in her wedding dress (sometimes placed next to soichi, other times with kyoko) to remind me that love sometimes requires taking a chance and reaching out in spite of the risks.

"Someone who never dares open their heart to another for fear of being hurt is like an investor who puts all his money in a passbook savings account earning 1% interest. It's self-defeatingly cautious. Heartbreak (or loss of principal) are real and serious dangers, and wise lovers and investors are at pains to minimize those risks. But an overabundance of caution is itself a form of recklessness, in pursuit of a false security. A strategy of total risk aversion may offer safety in the short term, but it ensures that you'll never achieve either wealth or enduring love - both of which provide genuine security." (-- sent to me by a friend - i wish i knew who to credit.....)

i also want to express my gratitude to you all for the enriching experience i've had sharing in this forum. it's a testament to all of you that i looked forward to our discussions just as much as i did sunday nights at 9:00pm.

and so i close this post with an image of soichi in my mind's eye, sitting on the beach at night under a full moon, kyoko by his side, looking to the heavens, smiling at et-chan and with misty eyes softly singing.....

There are places I'll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more

Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more

aznrapper, aka "the man loved by us", you're just as bad as sumobobby by choosing all of the above. You'd think I'd be grateful since you turned the poll into a colorful essay as well as a tour of your house. *cough*hairspray?*cough* Luckily you're not enrolled in my Bad Husbandry class.

If only ccwf had blogged the final episode like he did for Younger Man. It was a holiday weekend and all and he's a moderator now, but still! I want my $$$ back!

Hey, does anyone else want to get together for the Chinese Food Festival to see how much deep fried food we can feed creidesca?

P.S.
