Goro Zaizen and Shuji Satomi are assistant professors at Naniwa University Hospital. Goro is a brilliant surgeon who will do anything to make his way up the corporate ladder. On the other hand, Shuji is a physician who earnestly devotes himself to medical research. Though the two doctors have contrasting personalities and are considered to be rivals, they highly recognize each other's skills.

The entire medical department is restless while preparing for the election to choose a new Surgical Department Professor. All Goro has on his mind, is how to win the election. Meanwhile, Shuji is looking after a patient who apparently has pancreatic cancer. He carries out tests on the patient cautiously, and is very careful in telling the patient of the cancer. However, Goro barges in on their conversation, and out of the blue, tells the patient he has cancer, and that he needs an operation right away. Shuji is furious at Goro's rude attitude, and yells, "Doctors are not God!" Goro ignores this, and starts laying the groundwork for the operation. But when Goro finds out that the Director of the Medical Department has already given a diagnosis of stomach cancer, he cancels the operation. He feels that pointing out his boss's misdiagnosis will only hurt him in the upcoming election. Shuji however, is determined to save the patient's life and go on with the operation.

Very surprised to find that this is a 21 episodes series, as well as seeing Ito Hideaki's name in the cast list (doubt he'll have a major role, but I like watching him nevertheless emoticon )

I can't wait to see this cuz Takaya Kamikawa is in it. emoticon He's my favorite actor. The plot sounds interesting too, though.

couldn't believe I sat through the first episode and wasn't bored...I think I'm beginning to like these medical dramas, especially after watching Midnight Rain =P

hmm...did she also portray the daughter of the woman who was having an affair w/ the younger man in Are You in Love? (it was shown on Asahi Homecast winter of 2002 here in SoCal)? if so all 3 actors/actresses are also in this series =P the actress who plays her mother in Are You in Love? is like a hostess of sorts, having an affair w/ the doctor, and the young man she was having an affair (in which she ended up w/) in Are You in Love? is that young Hiroshi Yanagihara (portrayed by Ito Hideaki)...I just confirmed it...the nurse in Hotman, who's also in this drama, was also in Are You in Love?...what a coincidence for all 3 actor/actress from Are You in Love? to be in this drama =P

Re: J-drama: The Great White Tower (Shiroi Kyoto)

Dang, my 2nd VCR malfunctioned a few nights ago, so I only got to tape the last half of this. Haven't tried watching it yet. I hope I don't get too lost, but I don't want to miss any of Hotman. I hate it that the Asahi Homecast and Fuji dramas now air at the same time on Sunday nights. Maybe if I'm lucky, the International Channel will air this as their Sunday night Fuji drama. Dr. Coto's Clinic just finished on it. Sometimes though, they end up running the dramas that air on KSCI on Thursday nights.

That is so cool that the three actors who were involved in the same plot in Are You in Love? are in this drama. I thought the guy in that plot was pretty cute. emoticon His name is Hideaki Ito, right? If you count the Special Edition, then you can throw in a 4th Are You in Love? cast member, cuz Takaya Kamikawa appeared in the Special Editon and he's playing an attorney in this.

Speaking of familiar faces, did anyone watch Dr. Coto's Clinic and From the Northern Country? I saw bits of both, and that guy who played the main character in Dr. Coto's Clinic popped up in From the Northern Country right afterward. I'm surprised he's not in this! emoticon Anyone know his name? I think he looks like the grown-up version of that kid who played Daisuke (the student Sakura lived with) in Sakura.

He is Hidetaka Yoshioka, and I believe he's been in the cast of From the Northern Country since his childhood days, because From the Northern Country drama span decades of seasons on FujiTV.

Anyone else watching this or am I the only one? Sometimes I have trouble following it since I don't have subtitles, but I still want to see what happens. I love the cast, and from the trailers I've been watching on the Fuji website, I think it's really going to start getting good when it resumes on Feb. 1.

A few weeks ago, my mom happened to watch some of this with me. She said she'd be really uncomfortable having doctors who are that good-looking. She has a point. But they sure are nice to watch on TV! emoticon

been watching and taping all the episodes so far =)

I feel bad for Hideaki Ito's role, the character Goro just leaves that one male patient in the lurch (and he's done it 2-3 times already), and Hideaki Ito is left to face the patient and his wife. So very unprofessional of Goro!
