Story outline:
Talented pianist Yu Manzhi strolling down a Paris street, mischievously starts playing on the keyboard belonging to a street performer. In a cafe, Ji Wei shuttles b/w customers, bringing customers red wine, coffee. The sound of the piano outside the cafe sounds somewhat familiar, like the song he and a girl named Angel wrote 10 years ago. Those notes comes from "Angel Concerto," they bring his memory back to a time long ago.....

Ten years ago, under the personal tutelage of pianist He Yutung, a pair of young, perfectly matched musicians were born: one is her favorite disciple, one who strives to excel Yu Manzhi; one is her own son, a prodigy Ji Wei. Ji Wei discovered his mother's extramarital affair when he was 11 years old. He cannot accept it. Thus during the selection for philharmonic orchestra, he suddenly disappeared. In order to escape from reality, Ji Wei afterwards by chance arrived in Paris. But music no longer was his career. The violin only becomes an alternative in his life.

Ten years later, Yu Manzhi becomes a successful pianist in Paris. Because her parents are divorcing she returns to Shanghai to prevent them from separating. At the same Ji Wei is also returning to Shanghai to see his dying mother. He is temporarily working in his friend Xie Feng's cafe in Shanghai. Due to release of Yu Manzhi's CD, Ji Wei looks at the CD cover of Yu Manzhi, he has never forgotten about her.

Yu Manchih fellow classmate Qing Zuan is an idol singer. In the cafe, she meets Ji Wei, and falls for him. Qui Xiaowei is He Yutung's niece, she also studied under her aunt since she was little. After college graduation works as a DJ for a radio station. In order to promote the CD, Yu Manzhi goes on Xiaowei's program. She finds out Ji Wei has returned home and about her teacher He Yutung's illness. Therefore she goes to Ji Wei's home to see her.

Ji Wei discoveres his love for Manzhi is as before. But at her side she already has Ren Yunkuan. He Yutung dies not long after. Ji Wei becomes depressive, Qing Zuan makes a move on him. Yu Manzhi wants to encourage Ji Wei to return to music, but never thought that their relationship was used by a reporter to create news. Ren Yunkuan sees a scene of Yu Manzhi and Ji Wei revealing their true feelings. Ji Wei terminates the contract w/ the record company, again returning to work in Xie Feng's cafe. By now Yu Manzhi is under pressure, decides to be engaged to Ren Yunkuan. Never thought that Xiaowei, who knows about everything and sympathizes Ren Yunkuan and gradually falls in love with him. The desolate Ji Wei, under Qing Zuan's support, turns to music writing.

Yu Manzhi and Ren Yunkuan's wedding is not moving smoothly. She is unable to forget Ji Wei. Qing Zuan accuses Yu Manzhi doing things as pleases has hurt Ji Wei. Ji Wei knows about Qing Zuan's feelings for him, but he is unable to forget about Yu Manzhi. Due to the news of Yu Manzhi's engagement, he retreated once more. At this time, Ji Wei's former girlfriend he had while living in Paris Yu Yue wants to get back together w/ him. Wanting to get back together w/ Ji Wei, Yu Yue accepts a designing job w/ Yu Manzhi.
Under Ren Yunkuan's plans of retaliation, Yu Manzhi and Ji Wei have a huge misunderstanding. Ji Wei writes "Angel Concerto" to express his love for Yu Manzhi. Yu Manzhi is moved and finally reunites with him, ends her engagement to Ren Yunkuan. Ren Yunkuan wants to ruin Yu Manzhi's career. Xiaowei is injured in a traffic accident and needs a blood transfusion, accidentally discoveres that she is is Ji Wei's older half-sister w/ the same mother different father. And her biological father is none other than Yu Manzhi's father Yu Chungtien.

The truth is out. The fact is Ji Wei's father Ji Kai already knows about his wife's affair, but he does not talk about it, forgives He Yutung. Re: C-drama: Paris Sonata (巴黎戀歌) (9/27/06-??/??/??)

Well, I'm finally watching this show. I've seen ep. 7 and ep. 6 (in that sequence) and it's pretty good. I am a sucker for seeing a cute guy deeply in love with a cute girl. The way Ren Chuan (NOTE: The Chinese Pinyin confuses me, so I'm just going to spell out the names as I would say them) looks at Ruby Lin is the right way for the guy to look if he has been in love with her all this time. Major on-screen chemistry between Ruby Lin and Ren Chuan.

One thing does bug me is the accent of the young actress who plays Ruby Lin as a child. She spoke with a pure Beijing dialect. Maybe her years spent in Paris can explain Ruby's character's loss of Mandarin accent as a grown up. ;)

This show does not feel like a Chiung-Yao novel or TV adaptations of her novels. It does not have her trade-mark formula. This show models after K-dramas stereotypes and formulas. If you like K-dramas, you'll like this show.

BTW, the summary described above did not sound like the show I saw today. Basically, in ep. 7, Ruby's character was asked by the Record Company director and its creative director whether she had composed any songs in the past. Ruby said not really, except those she did as part of her school work. She said she did compose a song as a child with a friend. So she played that song for the couple. The song impressed the two, but they said it sounded "not quite there yet". Ruby agreed and said that she hasn't been able to capture the feeling of the song (as when she played it as a child.)

The mentioning of the old song, her first piano teacher, and teacher's son made her want to visit her teacher again. So she made arrangement to see her.

While she was visiting her piano teacher, the piano teacher's niece (Hsiao-Wei) arranged for her cousin to play a violin piece for his mother on her radio program. When his mother heard it, she was touched. Hsaio-Wei wanted the mother-son relationship mended before the mother dies (she has pancreatic cancer). Ruby heard "their" song played on the radio and played the piano part at her piano teacher's home. So essentially, they had a duet without being there together. Well, he never made it home to meet Ruby. But he did come home straight from the radio show. While on the street, he saw a doll that he gave Ruby hanging on someone's purse. He ran after it, but didn't see it again. Then suddenly across the street, he saw the backside of a girl and the doll hanging off her purse. He impulsively called out her name. With traffic going between the two, she didn't hear her name called at first, but she eventually heard it and turned around. They saw each other's face and it was instant recognition. She said he hadn't changed except he grew taller. He said she hasn't changed either. I think the no-change part is what's in their hearts, not their appearances.

The rest of the show had them catching up to each other's lives. He is obviously smittened with her still. She, however, has a boyfriend already.

I can help answer any questions about this drama.

Just so you know, KSCI is not showing all the episodes.

Last Friday's episode was episode 4. Then Monday's episode, it said Ep. 6, Tuesday's was Ep. 7. What happened to Episode 5?! It must have gotten incorporated between Friday's and Monday's episodes.

Yes, this drama comes on at noon on LA18. Usually from noon to 1:20pm (and sometimes to 1:30pm), but I always set my VCR to tape til 1:30pm.

Currently, there are only 2 Chinese dramas on KSCI/LA18. One comes on at noon and the other one comes on at 7pm (currently, they are airing "Moments in Peking").

Re: C-drama: Paris Sonata (巴黎戀歌) (9/27/06-??/??/??)

Another tear-jerking episode.

We found out from yesterday's episode that there is something going on between the niece and the piano teacher. Because when the piano teacher fainted and was brought to the hospital, she asked to see her older sister. When her sister came in, she asked the piano teacher whether they should tell Hsiao-Wei about the secret. The piano teacher insisted NO and said that secret will die with her. I suspect the niece is the daughter of the piano teacher and Man-Zhi's father.

Man-Zhi asked her boyfriend whether the copyright issue of the song Ji-Wei wrote had been settled. The boyfriend said everything is settled (basically, Ji-Wei signed a waiver waiving all the rights to the song he wrote so Man-Zhi can get the credit for it).

Man-Zhi was trying to put the lyrics to the Angel sonata (the song Ji-Wei composed when they were young). When she finished, she called up Ji-Wei asking him to meet her because she has something to show him. He said, come to the cafe where he worked because he is going there now. At the cafe, the newly famous singer (the girl who invited Ji-Wei to be in her music video) wanted to give him her new DVD (of the music video). Man-Zhi saw the interchange between the two and decided to NOT disturb them. But Ji-Wei saw Man-Zhi and chased after her. He asked why she walked away and didn't come in. She said she thought he looked busy. He said he is not busy. So she showed him the song, but the newly famous singer came up and started to gripe on Man-Zhi. She said Man-Zhi shouldn't be using Ji-Wei because she took all the credit for the song (and now she wants help on the lyrics too) and left Ji-Wei without the rights to the song. Man-Zhi was shocked to hear that. She had no idea Ji-Wei waived his rights. She kept apologizing and left. She realized that she has been feeling something from the past which is more a fantasy than a reality. She thinks Ji-Wei and the singer has a thing going. Meanwhile, Ji-Wei is mad at the singer for interfering with his relationship with Man-Zhi.

Man-Zhi's father had a business meeting at the hospital where the piano teacher is recuperating. He saw her in a wheel chair and he came up to her and talked. He said the only thing he regretted now is that he will never hear her play Moonlight Sonata again. She said sure you can, so they both closed their eyes and reminisced. Meanwhile, the piano teacher's husband saw the silent exchange between the two and watched them from afar. He then brought over the tea that the Teacher requested. After Man-Zhi's father left, Ji-Wei's father saw in his wife's eyes tons of tears. He knew that guy is the person his wife loved all these years.

Basically, Teacher Her (that's how I would pronouce that last name) is dying and everyone around her is trying to figure out how to make the best of her last few days/weeks of her life. So her niece (maybe it was her son) came up with the idea of having a piano recital of her past students, which would include Yu Man-Zhi (who is really busy now because of the preparation and launching of her new single).

So Ji-Wei called Man-Zhi and asked whether she can come to the recital. She agreed quickly, but since the recital is on the same day as the press conference involving the launching of her single, she said she will come as soon as she finishes with the press conference. Then she asked Ji-Wei what song she should play. Ji-Wei said he was thinking they should play a duet of her mom's favorite song, Moonlight Sonata. When Man-Zhi heard the song mentioned, something clicked in her head and her demeanor changed. Ji-Wei noticed the change too and asked her "this song shouldn't be too difficult for you, should it?" Man-Zhi made some excuse and left quickly. She ran to her father's office and interrupted her father's meeting demanding to see him right away.

She confronted him about Teacher Her. She now suspect that the woman her father is in love with is Teacher Her. She thinks her father used her to have an affair with her piano teacher. His father tried to explain to her that it wasn't like that. She went on and on...almost to hysterics...then her father slapped her. She was in shock. Then he said, when you calm down a bit, I'll tell you everything.....

END of today's episode.

The great thing about this show is that we know Man-Zhi's true love is Ji-Wei and Ji-Wei's true love is Man-Zhi, but they just can't get it together. But it's not contrite. Things just happened to be that way. So they have to remove the obstacles (or things will just evolve to resolved themselves) before they can finally be together. It's like if they are meant to be together, their obstacles (like her boyfriend and their parents' relationship) will resolved themselves in time.

There is an interesting discussion here talking about Man-Zhi shouldn't be with either of the men.

http://www.rubystation.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=8228&sid=e47147f50cc7f51a25bf75f20f23a959

One is too controlling and the other lacks decision making power. One takes care of her (she doesn't have to worry a thing) by wheeling his money power and the other takes care of her by thinking about her all the time (she has to take care of him).

I actually know a couple who went out for 10 years (perfect relationship) while living in the States, but when they went back to live in Taiwan, families, politics, and outside influence tore them apart. I think Man-Zhi's relationship with her rich boyfriend is the same way. By moving back to Shanghai, Man-Zhi changed the dynamics of that relationship.

Re: C-drama: Paris Sonata (巴黎戀歌) (9/27/06-??/??/??)

Friday's episode (10/6/2006):

Ji-Wei and Hsiao Wei arranged a small music recital for Ji-Wei's mom.

Man-Zhi didn't know whether she should go to the recital or not. She felt if she went to the recital, she would be betraying her mom, but if she doesn't go, she would be renaging on her promise to Ji-Wei.

Man-Zhi had her launch party/press conference, but only a few members of the press showed up. Everyone else went to the press conference of Liang Jin-Chuan. Liang announced that she and the man (Ji-Wei) in her video is having a romantic relationship. That news overshadowed Man-Zhi's record launching news. The record company executive is mad as hell and asked the lady executive to take care of the matter because both girls are in her charge and they are creating too much gossip.

Man-Zhi played her song at the press conference and went off the stage to change. All the media were leaving, but her boyfriend stepped in and told the press to stay. All the media attention was focused on him. Man-Zhi thought since the attention is not on her anymore, she went to Ji-Wei's music recital for his mom.

She made it just in time to take over the playing for Hsiao-Wei. Hsiao-Wei and Ji-Wei were playing moonlight sonata. Ji-Wei's mother passed away while listening to the song.

Man-Zhi had a nightmare that night about her father and her piano teacher. Her mom overheard it and wanted confirmation that the woman her husband loves is the piano teacher. Man-zhi had to tell her mom that she had only found out about it the week before. Her mom wanted to go and tell him off, but Man-Zhi told her that the teacher died and she doesn't know how to tell her father yet.

So, of course, Man-Zhi's mom went over to her ex-husband's house and told him that the piano teacher died. She continued to say that she died young because she got what she deserved. Man-zhi's dad was devastated and told her to be kind with her mouth.

Liang hid after she created the gossip about her and Ji-Wei. The media went to Ji-Wei's house to get a comment from him. He had to leave the house (and thus unable to help with the preparation of his mom's funeral) by the side door. He decided to hide out at the coffee shop.
