TW-Drama: 住左邊 住石邊 Taipei Family

The title's 住左邊 住石邊 literal translation is "live on the right side and live on the left side." It means "live here and live there". But the English name for this show is Taipei family. It has reverted back to studio sets--the old way Taiwan dramas used to be presented. It's suppose to be funny.

This story takes place in a residential area. A new 30-story apartment building is built next to an old community. Hsiao Guo is the head of the resident association of the old community and his wife "Hseo Hseo" bought an unit in the 30-story apartment building next door as an investment and she becomes the head of residents association of the new apartment building. So the couple becomes the center of this residential community comprised of young professionals (who live in the apartment) and the old.

It's a SETTV production.

http://www.settv.com.tw/metro/m094/story.htm

but Public TV has a discussion forum on this show:

http://www.pts.org.tw/%7Eweb01/family/

I think this story will have different vignettes, similar to My Japanese Wife, so KSCI/LA18 can stop the show at anytime without skipping a beat.

The first story or the sub-title of this show is called "Guo Fu-Chien's Ex-Girlfriend is here." Guo Fu-Chien is Hsiao Guo, the head of the residents association of the old community.

No, it's not the same girl. The actress who plays the ex-girlfriend is a well-known model in Taiwan, albeit getting old (old in modelling circle is probably 26!). She's not a regular actress, so a cameo role is OK.

Most of these actors and actresses on this show are veteran comedians on Taiwanese TV variety shows and many are stage actors and actresses. So the acting is strangely stilted (just think of watching a stage show). The laugh tracks bothers me. It's canned, not studio audience.

I liked the Japanese Wife, but not this show.

I'm all confused now. The ex-girlfriend you are referring to is in the 1st episode of "Taipei Family" or are you talking about Lin Jia-Tai's ex-girlfriend who left him to go to the States in "My Japanese Wife 2"?

But if you are referring to episode 1 of Taipei Family, the only actress who appeared in both shows is one of the two neighbor ladies in Taipei Family. In My Japanese Wife 2, she played Lin Jia-An's (the teacher) girlfriend from way back. She did leave him to study abroad. But her appearance on My Japanese Wife was 3-4 episodes, but she is a regular in Taipei Family as a nosey neighbor.

I agree with your assessement of this show. I stopped watching after ep. 1. Not only are the acting grating, the laugh track was turned on even when the line wasn't funny.

We should all email KSCI/LA18 and tell them to get the show off the air.

The email address for the programming department is:

Did you not like My Japanese Wife? I only watched a little of that because of the lack of English subs. (My Chinese literacy is very limited, and my Mandarin and Japanese aren't good enough to follow much of the dialog.)

Re: TW-Drama: 住左邊 住石邊 Taipei Family

Charles, I know you didn't ask me, but I had to put my 2 cents in.

I love My Japanese Wife. There were humor in there that got the whole family laughing....my 6YO daughter has at least 30 episodes taped in our DVR which we are not allowed to delete. My favorite episode was the one when Lin Jia-Tai skipped out of the house somehow, but the whole family thought he was in bed sleeping. He hid a ball and some pillows under the cover (so people would think he was sleeping in bed), so when his sister-in-law comes to wake him up, the ball rolled and she screamed and threw the ball behind her. The ball landed in mother-in-law's hand, then into Lin Jia-An's hands. Well, it's hard to imagine that being funny, but I was amused sufficiently enough to laugh out loud.

Then there was the episode where a pornography dvd was missing from the DVD player and the daughter-in-law found it in mother-in-law's room..

I could go on and on....it was family entertainment suitable for the whole family. Of course my 6YO wouldn't understand the sexual innuendos, but the adults would. Although the Japanese actress who played the Japanese wife was not such a great actress, she did have chemistry with the rest of the cast and her acting did improve a bit with time. In the end, it was believable (to my own amazement) that the Japanese actress could be that actor's wife.

What was endearing was that the Lin family lived like what a typical Taiwanese family would live--their way of life, thinking, work, family, tradition, and customs--were something I can identify with. We would talk like that at home...but minus the crazy plots. My 6YO actually picked up a lot of Taiwanese from watching the program.

Going back to 住左邊 住石邊 Taipei Family, the acting is exaggerated by a cast of supporting actors and actresses. Some parts looked improvised and disorganized.

I want to spend my time watching dramas I enjoy. This show is not enjoyable.

MJW = my japanese wife

I've only watched few eps of my japanese wife when it was aired on ksci. compare to this taipei family, from what I've seen during those eps that I watched. MJW has better scripted, and first rate casts. hell, even the one-liner jokes are funny. eventhough it has no story, and about nothing (ya know, like seinfeld, a show about nothing. just daily happenings about seinfeld and friends).

now, this show, the one-liners aren't funny. too many fake audience laughing sound effects and too many exaggerated script lines. overall, the casts aren't pretty to look at. if they want to put in some 3rd rates casts or fresh faces to the show, at least get some good looking casts to make up what this drama lack of.
