Re: C-Drama: 满汉全席 (Emperor's Banquet/Man Han Chuen Xi)

Did they air Korean programs back then on KXLA?

Not until later. So, back in the C-drama “glory days”, emoticon we had primarily Chinese programming on KSCI, KSCI's digital channel (24hr Chinese programming), KRCA, and KXLA.

Wow. Were there subtitles, or did that not start until later?

I don't remember Chinese dramas being subbed (in English) until the Last Empress. I wish they would sub idol dramas (usually shown at noon on KSCI) though.

Well, they were subbed in Chinese.

xml:lang zh-TW 末代皇妃 (The Last Empress) was, I think, the first locally broadcast show to have English subtitles. You can go back to that topic and see our skepticism that KSCI would actually provide English subtitles for a show.

Yeah, I remember that. I was just wondering if KXLA had ever aired it with subtitles during the period C-dramas were predominant on that channel.

I was quite upset for a while after KXLA was "bought out" by the Korean consortium to air Korean programming rather than Chinese programming. I guess that's how I stumbled across Korean dramas on KXLA in the first place because I was still flipping the channel to KXLA--hoping they would put back the Chinese programs.

I've been watching Chinese programs in LA for 8 years and I've never seen English subtitles for Chinese dramas until the Last Empress on either KXLA or KSCI.

Yes. I remember when they began to subtitle The Last Empress, our C-Drama board became much more popular than before, since non-Chinese speakers could actually view these programs. I also think that there's not as much publicity for Chinese dramas as there are for Japanese or Korean dramas.
