Re: C-drama: 楊門虎將 (Warriors of the Yang Clan)

I understand Last Empress was from the mainland. Is this drama from the communist mainland or the Republic?

I think it is a joint production between mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Korea. Check YesAsia for more information about the production company.

On a side note....

It's strange to hear you refer to Taiwan as the Republic.

The official name of China is People's Republic of China. The country name Taiwan would like to live under is Republic of China, but no one recognizes it. A lot of Taiwanese people still put ROC in their address labels, right after Taiwan, but I no longer bother with that. Any country who has diplomatic relationship with China will not recognize Taiwan as Republic of China and we all know that majority of the countries in this world have diplomatic relationship with China, so ROC is a no-namer as most of the world think Taiwan is part of People's Republic of China. In my mind, Taiwan is Taiwan, but mainland China would not let Taiwan be just Taiwan....so they kind of allow Taiwan the use of the Republic of China because the word China is still in there. That's just my opinion.

The odd thing is that China seems OK with Taiwan using Republic of China and Chinese Taipei (used in the Olympics, International Monetary Fund,…). What they don't seem OK with is using the word Taiwan as if it were a separate entity (use in a phrase like “Taiwan, renegade province” is OK).

Personally, I just use “Taiwan” most of the time, too. When wanting to refer just to the island, I'll sometimes use “Formosa”. On official documents, I'll still often put “Taiwan, R.O.C.”

I support the Kuomintang and am pretty much a pro-reunificationist. I don't think Taiwan should be independent and that (yeah, it may sound REALLY old-fashioned, but its really my opinion) the legitimate government of China is the republic on Taiwan. I do call Taiwan the Chinese Republic 90% of the time (though I still refer to it as Taiwan Island in other cases - namely when I discuss the island's history prior to 1949) so that's why I usually call mainland China "the mainland" or the "People's Republic". If I'm in a very Kuomintang mood - I refer to it as the "area controlled by the rebels" ^^ but that never happens. emoticon

This is a matter of opinion - and we can discuss this issue more at the "Taiwan" topic at Misc. Stuff.

Re: C-drama: 楊門虎將 (Warriors of the Yang Clan)

okay, my mom and I've seen so many versions regarding the Yang family (Warriors of the Yang Clan would be like our 4th or 5th one, with 2 of them focusing on this generation, while the others focused on the later generation) that we had some difficulty remembering who each of the 7 sons (and their respective spouses) were while watching the 1st episode. Anyone want to clarify? Hopefully it's not a spoiler of sorts for those who don't know the story of the Yang family.

More importantly, is the series, in fact, being shown with English subs? And was the first episode good? emoticon

yes, eng subs! (it was already confirmed on the KSCI-TV page), and I'm definitely going to continue watching...hopefully this version gives me a better understanding of this generation of the Yang family, I've already several versions regarding the generation that followed this one.

Warriors of the Yang Clan
2005 KSCI Chinese Subtitled Drama #2
Episode 1, January 4, 2005

Well, one thing I can say is that I really do miss Last Empress. Perhaps because I know more about Modern Chinese histoiry than Ancient Chinese history, but I am already engrossed.

I like the karate scenes in the show - they are truly well coordinated and thus add to the flavour of the show. Memorizing the names of the various Yang sons will be annoying - but I'll get the hang of it. I suspect that the assasination attempt on General Yang was done by the prime minister - I wonder if I was right...

I definately will keep watching. I think it will get better. The music isn't that bad either.. though I will miss the Last Empress's OST.

I have to watch this drama because a dear friend on the Hotelier website is a great admirer of Su You Peng. I don't think I could manage without the English subs. Mandarin does not sink in at all for me. I love the flying fighting scenes. No bamboo forests yet!!! Chae Rim looks so much better in this than in Oh Pil Seung. Yes I think Minister Pan is the villain of the piece and there will be fighting between the Pan son and the Yang brothers. Until I can remember the names I am going to refer to them as Yang 1 or 2 or 3 or 4.

I'd read the earlier post about English subs being reported on the KSCI page, but I only trust what KSCI reports so far. emoticon After all, the TV listings they sent out said that “UTB New Year's Day Special” would run at 07:30 yesterday instead of Watashi no Aozora, causing me to miss an episode emoticon, and the listing information sent out for today still lists “The Last Empress” in the 7pm slot.
