C-drama: 楊門虎將 (Warriors of the Yang Clan)
looks like this series will be replacing Last Empress. However, whether this series will carry subtitles is still yet to be known.
Another chinese drama starring Korean actress Chae Rim, and her 2nd collaboration with Alec Su.

Re: C-drama: 楊門虎將 (Warriors of the Yang Clan)
I saw the trailer for this series.. and I think I'm going to really miss Last Empress.. these ancient Chinese historical dramas really didn't do anything for me.. but I'll give it a try.
I too have no idea if it will contain subs.. I sent an email to KSCI asking them, so I'll keep you guys posted.

Yay! I guess I didn't miss the Last Empress' final episode after all.
I am glad this will be English subbed. I guess KSCI saw that Last Empress did unexpectadly well and decided to go ahead with the subbing.

I understand from a friend in Singapore (who is a Sou Yu Peng devotee!) that he gives a great performance in this drama. It looks very colourful and I have to watch to report my opinion to S'pore. At least I am happy that it has English subs....

Re: C-drama: 楊門虎將 (Warriors of the Yang Clan)
It's still strange to watch a Korean girl play in a Chinese historical drama. I guess Alex Su and Chae Rim have great chemistry acting together. Not sure why, but they do. I still can't imagine how these 2 actors can do a scene when they are speaking 2 different languages. Do they have to translate all the Chinese dialogues into Korean so Chae Rim can do her lines?

Re: C-drama: 楊門虎將 (Warriors of the Yang Clan)
I wondered about this also. However, it seems that the same thing was in place in 'Aegean Sea' drama. I saw some of this and I was quite impressed by the way they seemed to all understand the emotions of the scenes.
Alec apparently took great care of Chae Rim. He promised her mother he would look after her and also said the same to her husband. Later Chae Rim said that doing the scenes without knowing the various languages was not difficult as she got to know Alec. She thinks him a very fine actor who shows the emotions of the scene so well that language becomes secondary.
I have to say that I watch foreign films many times without any English subs no matter what the language may be. If the actors are good, I can still enjoy the story. Knowing the story through having the script would make it quite possible to act out a scene.

Along these lines, here are a couple of quotes from Uma Thurman and Lucy Liu on learning Japanese for the movie Kill Bill. First Uma Thurman's quote:classblockquoteI was trying to get to the point where I could say my Japanese lines with feeling and conviction, as if I knew what I was saying. They tell me my Japanese is comprehensible. That's what I was going for.Now Lucy Liu:classblockquote[Tarantino] didn't ask me to do anything, really. He expected me to show up for training, and all that stuff. The research that I did for myself was to learn the language as much as I possibly could, and understand the language. First I learned the language through the dialog, and then I learned the language. Originally he had written it, stuff was in Japanese, and then I got the rewrite and it was in English. I said, 'Is it OK if we go back to the Japanese version, because I think it really brings a special quality to the film and to her?' He said "Yeah, I was trying to make it easier for you.' I was like, no, let's do it the other way because I think it will be really cool. I think when we go and see a foreign film, it's really a cool experience. It's a whole different thing. But so, that was really important to me, to have the language be dead on. He said, 'you know, you realize that when she does speak the Japanese, she does have to speak it perfectly? She can't just speak it like I'm learning it.' I said I understand that, and I learned the dialog thoroughly, and then I started learning it from first grade, when you're a child and everything from like I, me, you, we, that sort of thing. Then the numbers, and 'I live at,' the address sort of thing. Then what's the difference between tanaka-san and all these other people. That was sort of the key to her character. Because once you got the language down and also they said, 'Once you learn the language of her character, the Yakuza speak in a very different way.' Their tone is more monotone than it is like when you're a regular Japanese person, so you have to recognize. It's kind of like if you see the Sopranos, you're not going to be speaking in the Shakespearean English, you have to recognize that. I was like, 'Oh, OK, that's good to know.' So there were so many different elements to the language, and once you embody the language, the character comes really naturally, especially when you put the costume on and stuff."Obviously, Lucy Liu had the harder time since she was playing a character fluent in Japanese. And, although some have criticized her Japanese more than Thurman's, in my opinion, Liu did a much better job acting while speaking the language, probably in part because she had had to and did put more effort into learning Japanese than Thurman.
