Re: TW drama: The Rose
Like I said before, the Comic Productions people managed to make Taiwan look and smell so good. Don't get me wrong, I love Taiwan, but I don't relish the smell and the heat which will hit you as soon as you exit the plane and as you drive towards a city. On the drive into Taipei, you'll see a very ugly (people's laundry hanging at the back of their balconies which incidentally are facing the highway), but interesting city approaching.
This show is not realistic, but fantastic. Afterall, it's origin is a comic book. It is suppose to be full of fantasies.
The house where these kids are living is not a place where the regular Taiwanese rich live. Only an elite few can afford a place like that--the size and view of it. Most wealthy Taiwanese live in large, luxurious apartments in the middle of the city. I keep forgetting that the material this show derived from is not Taiwanese, but Japanese. I haven't read this particular comic book, but I'm sure the Comic Productions people followed it closely.
The recent Presidential election in Taiwan is indeed interesting. The winners can't rejoice and the loosers refuse to loose. It's too bad that after all these years, the aftermath of Chiang Kai-Shek's discriminatory policies are still causing problems in Taiwan. The division between the "mainlanders-Taiwanese" and the Taiwanese will never be healed. Depending on who you speak to, you'll get 2 versions of the same story.

I don't particularly enjoy watching this show, not as much as the Meteor Gardens (which was produced by the same company), mostly because it deals with incest and homosexuality half-heartedly. I just thought if a show is going to bring incest and homosexuality up, it should deal with these subjects honestly and realistically...
BTW, I was very surprised that this show can pass the GIO censors in Taiwan.
Frankly, if this were an American show, I don't think the FCC would allow it to air here, as it would generate complaints from just about every lobby group, liberal or conservative, for it's totally irresponsible and disturbing portrayal of homosexuality and incest. I agree with you that TV should deal with sensitive issues honestly and realistically. I think "The Rose" and other dramas like it easily could do so without losing any entertainment value. Unfortunately, this is one sick, twisted little drama. I don't even know why I'm still watching it. Guess I like the eye candy.
Btw, thanks for all the info on the drama. I don't understand Chinese either, so all that character info helped a lot. To think, I wanted Bai Her and Kuei to get together. Ewww!!! I don't now.

Actor Huang Zhi Wei is currently in the remake of the drama 101st Proposal (the Japanese drama I believe?), and the female lead of K-drama Winter Sonata is taking on the role of the female lead...don't know if this series has finished production yet.
as for Wallace/Brian Zheng Yuan Chang, he is in the GTV idol drama, Nine Ball (which also stars David Chen Yu Fan, who is currently in Secret Garden II)...the series is set to air in Taiwan on May 5th 2004
I'm not sure which actor is which. Which one played Jin and which one played Kuei? Also, is the actor who played Jin half-Caucasian in real life? Before I knew the character was half-Caucasian, I kept thinking the actor looked like he was.

Re: TW drama: The Rose
According to the Chinese synopsis of episodes, it should be either #19 or #20. Today's episode is definitely #20.

I haven't seen it, but I wish it would end soon though.

oh darn it, I was really hoping it would end this week. I really doubt the series to replace it will b another idol drama, but I'd still like to find out what it will be.

Re: TW drama: The Rose
I just checked the story board again. On the website, it only had the descriptions of 21 episodes and since we are somewhere in the middle of episode 20, maybe we'll have a new show early next week.
For some reason, the sequence of events shown here on TV is a little different from the descriptions offered on the website, so I wouldn't be surprised if KSCI did some editing themselves.
-----------------
Just realized that this show's website only had the plot summaries up to Episode 21. In today's episode, the movie star has a problem pregnancy causing her to go into surgery and almost lost her life. That wasn't in the story board.
I think KSCI also cut the sex scene between Bai-Her and Jin.

外面門沒關
Perhaps, the tricky character here was 關, which is now written as 関 in Japanese and sometimes now in Taiwan, too (it's been simplified further to 关 in Simplified Chinese).

should I go check my VCD set? (I didn't buy the series...someone had kindly made the retail VCD avail on BT sometime last year)...since sometimes the websites can be pretty inaccurate, anyone who's read the synopsis for the TW idol drama Hi! Honey, and actually watched it like I did would understand.

Re: TW drama: The Rose
I didn't see that coming (I didn't see the whole episode yet, just that last part)... but now I can (quite snuggly) fit all my 100-kbps AVIs of this drama on 3 CDs!

I think so too... here's the captured sequence of events. (luckily they didn't edit it out too well; check the last frame)

Thanks for that bit. I wonder if I should seriously try to learn the traditional forms so I won't have anymore of these embarassing moments ... but if I'm already learning 20 漢字 a week for fun...
This is probably the wrong place to ask, but since you're here: is there an easy way to figure out the unicode number of a character? Right now I'm finding it in the character map thing though the... ugh... traditional radical system.

EDIT: And now that I've actually seen the episode... my, Bai He looked pretty in that dress... (and, er, I guess Jin looked pretty good too)
