Upcoming Taiwanese-Related Programming
Since Taiwanese movies rarely air, I am revamping this thread to point out any Taiwanese-related programming of note.
• T-Drama: 心蓮 (Heart Lotus) [INTL weeknights 10pm]
• Taiwan News [KSCI weekdays] (in Mandarin)
Heart Lotus is in Taiwanese with Chinese subtitles.

Re: Upcoming Taiwanese Movies
The Wedding Banquet is really good. I haven't seen Yi Yi or Cradle to the Grave yet. In Cradle to the Grave, Jet Li plays a Taiwanese cop, doesn't he? In real life, I think he's a Mainlander, not that anyone cares. Just thought I'd throw out that bit of trivia.
Here's a few other Chinese-language films I've seen recently:
Quitting -- This is a true story about a Chinese actor whose heroin addiction eventually ruins his career and lands him in a mental institution. The actor, the patients in the mental institution, and his family and friends all play themselves in the movie. I thought this would be a really grim and depressing film, but it actually turned out to be uplifiting. It had been playing on Starz Cinema in March, but I don't know if it still is.
Love Me, Love My Money -- Saw this on the International Channel on Valentine's Day. It's a romantic comedy about a Hong Kong businessman who pretends he's poor to win the love of a woman. Really fun movie.
Red Firecracker, Green Firecracker -- I rented this one at the video store. It's a turn-of-the-century Chinese film about a daughter who's not allowed to marry because she's set to inherit her family's fireworks factory. Low and behold, a handsome newcomer arrives in town and lands a job with the family, so of course, the daughter is attracted to him.
There's another good Chinese film about a blind girl, but I can't remember the title.

Re: Upcoming Taiwanese Movies
I really like the i-channel, but wish they would stop juggling around the movie slots, and they try to bring back the TV5 french films they used to run on Saturday afternoon and then eveings. Those were fun.

Re: Upcoming Taiwanese Movies
Ugh. I just sat through Cradle 2 the Grave, which I had recorded a while ago. I rated it a 4/10 over at IMDb. I'll take Jackie Chan over Jet Li any day.

That bad, huh? I've only seen one Jet Li movie. I think it was called Kiss of the Dragon. Li played a Chinese cop who travels to France to help the French police with a case, and then a bad French cop frames him for murder. It was okay, but not the best film in the world. Bridget Fonda plays an American prostitute in the film, and there were some amusing flirtation scenes between her and Li.
It's kind of hard for me to compare Chan and Li since, if you take away the martial arts stunts, they are completely different actors. I think Chan was fortunate to have a gift for comedy, because I think it's easier to pull off good martial arts comedies in the U.S. than it is to pull off good martial arts dramas. So in that sense, Chan definitely has an edge over Li. Plus, I think Chan is a more seasoned actor than Li. However, my actual favorite Chinese crossover actor is Chow Yun Fat.

Re: Upcoming Taiwanese Movies
Hmm, looking it up, I gave Kiss of the Dragon a 6/10. For good Jet Li films, see the Once Upon a Time in China movies. The One is kind of content-free but enjoyable, too. Finally, Jet Li has made a recent, well-received movie, but I haven't seen that myself.
And, since there's no Korean movies topic, I noticed that MTV2 is airing the Korean fantasy & martial arts movie Volcano High again on Thursday night.

Re: Upcoming Taiwanese-Related Programming
Ang Lee's most excellent film, The Wedding Banquet is being shown again on cable (the Love Stories channel) on the 16th. I rated this film 8/10.
