C-Drama: 漢武大帝 (The Emperor of the Han Dynasty)

This show will begin today at 12 noon replacing Love Storm.

This is KSCI/LA18's announcement of this show:

http://www.kscitv.com/pages/128977.asp

This is KTSF's synopsis of this show:

http://www.ktsf.com/ktsf_e/programs/han2.html

I can't find an official website for this show, but apparently it had high ratings when it aired in China.

Edit: Off air

Re: C-Drama: 漢武大帝 (The Emperor of the Han Dynasty)

I saw the first episode. It's OK in terms of acting and the dialogue (I've seen better historical dramas). The plot moves slowly and the sets are grand! There are several dance productions and war scenes that bordered on the garantuan scale. I'm not sure that was necessary to tell a good story.

It makes me wonder whether the large-ness of this show is a way of obscuring the audience's senses so they won't care for the unpleasant looking actors/actresses and the mediocre dialogue and plot. Even with the cheap labor in China, this show must have cost a lot to produce. Don't pay attention to the details (it'll only disappoint you), just look at the big picture.

Re: C-Drama: 漢武大帝 (The Emperor of the Han Dynasty)

I finally figured it out. This is the story of the Han Emperor who is the father of the Han Wu Di that was depicted in the last Emperor Han Wu Di 2 show.

This is what Wikipedia said about this Han Wu Di:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_Jing_of_Han

I have been watching this show and I was confused thinking this was the same Emperor as the Emperor in Han Wu Di 2. The dialogue has lots of historical references and the plot is of course more of the fights between the women in the Emperor's life and the fight for being the crown prince.

According to this article:

http://www.epochtimes.com/b5/5/2/1/n799972.htm

There are 60 episodes, but the last 2 episodes are NGs and behind-the-scenes footages. Apparently, Central TV signed 60 episodes contracts with advertizers, so they were obliged to show 60 episodes of this drama. But in reality, the director only filmed 58 episodes. The show ended when the emperor died and the crown prince assumed the crown.

You are not the only one who can't stand it. I mean realistically, who can understand all the verbose historical terminologies and references unless you are a PhD specializing in Han Dynasty. I get a headache just listening to them talk.

Underneath all that facade of "great" production, it's not a very good show. I can't explain it either.

But this show had a great following and ratings in China when it first aired.

Having studied ancient Chinese history, this series was of great interest to me. The historical accuracy of the story and attention to detail reflected extensive research on the costumes of that era. This is not for audiences expecting pop idol stars or without a passing interest in the Han Dynasty.

Re: C-Drama: 漢武大帝 (The Emperor of the Han Dynasty)

I have been watching this series actually. I had about 15 episodes taped and I am trying to finish watching it. It's a complicated drama covering 2 reigns of father-son emperors. I had no idea Empress Dowager Dou had such power. Initially, I was a little confused with "Han Wu Di 2" (which aired maybe 6 months ago), but I now realized this series covered his father, then Han Wu Di (Liu Tser).

The script is complicated, the characters are numbered in the thousands, the scenes are huge, and the plots are multilayered. I believe it's a great series for Chinese history (Han Dynasty) buffs. This series have gotten better since the first few episodes. I can see now why it's a big hit in China. But to get 2-3 doses of Han Wu Di within a 2 year period is a little too much. Don't they have other emperors to cover?

I still have 7 episodes to go!! It's a good thing KSCI decided not to translate this show. It'll be next to impossible to translate the dialogues in this drama!
