typing fancy characters

The Special Chars menu contains some commonly used special characters. Simply choose the special character from the menu, and it will be inserted into your post.

Likewise, the fancy quotes menu contains curly double and single quotes for English and a pair of quotes for Chinese/Japanese/Korean text. Select the quotes from the menu, and they will be inserted into your post. Mozilla/Firefox and IE users also have the option of first typing and selecting text and then choosing quotes from the menu.

Notes on special characters:classulclassliellipsis (…): used to indicate omitted textclassulclassliTo get the centered xml:langzh-TW that appears in Chinese and Japanese, choose … from the menu and then specify the language of that text is Chinese or Japanese.classlinon-breaking space: used to prevent line breaks between wordsclassulclassliExample: “Mr. Bill” should never be allowed to wrap between the words Mr. and Bill. Use a non-breaking space from the menu instead of a regular space to prevent a possible line break between those words.classliEm dash (—): often simply called a dashclassliEn dash (–): used in place of the word to in rangesclassulclassli1–2pmclassliLos Angeles–San FranciscoclassliHyphen (‐): hyphenated wordsclassulclassliExample: sisters‐in‐law, well‐respected personclassliNote: not the same as the - key on a keyboard, which is a compromise character (looks halfway between a hyphen and a minus) and is not used in professional typographyclassliMinus (−): minus sign used in mathematics

Clickable Images (images that are also links) and Identifying Them

You can link an image so that it takes a viewer some place else if they click on it.

For example, here is a plain image from The Last Samurai, produced using the following code:
[img]http://www.web-i18n.net/~ccwf/img/…/t_17.jpeg[/img]
Image

Now here's the image but now inside a link taking viewers to The Last Samurai topic.
[url=http://www.runboard.com/bcjkdramas…][img]http://www.…[/img][/url]
Image
Also notice the blue border underneath the image? That let's you know that the image is clickable. All clickable images on this board have the blue border underneath. (The images in the banner at the top of each page are also clickable. They don't have the blue border because the banner is actually a page on my company web site.)

Note: There are buttons for inserting links and images, so you don't have to type in all the special codes by hand.

Tooltips (text that appear when you mouseover something)

You can also add a tooltip to an image or anything else. A tooltip is the little floating text that appears when you move the mouse over an item and wait. For example, here is an example of a tooltip over the text Tom Cruise:
[span][title=Pronounced Krīs or Krice in German/]Tom Cruise[/span]
->titlePronounced Krīs or Krice in GermanTom Cruise<- (Put your mouse over the text to the left.)

Here's a tooltip over an image.
[span][title=Tom Cruise/][img]http://www.…[/img][/span]
titleTom CruiseImage

Again, there are post buttons so that the special codes do not need to be memorized and typed. Click on the span button to put something in a span. (A span is just a generic span of text. You put something in a span in order to do something special with it like add a tooltip or float it to the right.) Then, click on title to create the tooltip. (Tooltip is the common, informal name for the floating tip. The official but confusing name is title.)

Users with most browsers will also see a light blue border above text and images with tooltips. That light blue border on top lets you know that something has a tooltip (so you don't have to move your mouse over everything on a page to figure out what hidden tips might be there). Internet Explorer users on Windows, HP-UX, and Solaris will not see the light blue border on top. Internet Explorer users on a Mac and Firefox, Mozilla, Safari,… users should see the blue tooltip indicator.

Quick Reply

I wrote and added a Quick Reply feature. Just type into the textarea and press “Quick Reply”.

Note that the advanced C/J/K-only features (like lists and wrapping text around images) will not work using the Quick Reply. Quick Reply is only meant for short, simple text. For more complicated text, use a normal reply. Also note that Quick Replies have no subjects.

I've also posted Quick Reply integration details for those interested.

Google Search of Current Area

I wrote and added Google search feature. Just type into the input area and press “Search”. It will search the current forum or topic if you are within a forum/topic, and it will search the whole board if you are on the main page.

I've posted the Google Search integration details for those interested.

I've also added the ability to have forum-specific or even topic-specific banners, footer images, backgrounds, Edit/Quote/Reply images, Email/PM/AIM/ICQ/MSN images, and so forth. And they can vary depending for each user depending on the user's browser language preferences. (This new ability is only for general board images, not avatars or signature images.)

So, I encourage people to start designing banners, backgrounds, footers, and so forth they might like for a particular forum or topic.

Quick Site Navigation

I don't remember whether I've posted this before or not, but the upper left set of pictures are all links to their respective areas of the board. They don't have the customary blue bars underneath to let you know they are links because blue bars just looked awful there.

Thumbnails

Here's how to use the thumbnail feature:classcenter
[url=http://…][span][class=thumbnail/][img]http://…[/img][/span][/url]
classulclassliPut your image inside a span with class thumbnail.classliFor the benefit of IE/Win32 users, put that span inside a link. It doesn't matter where the link goes for the effect to work, but it's nice if you link to something useful like the page where you got the image or the site of the image's creator. If you really can't think of anywhere useful to link, link to '#', which is the current page.classliThe thumbnail will expand to full size when you hover over it.classthumbnailImage

As can be seen above, thumbnails that hover when you move your mouse over them are one inch wide and have a thick, outset border. When you see that border, you'll know that you can move your mouse over the thumbnail to see the full image.
