Re: What the hell is Karma?
Maybe it has something to do with those new functions (Applaud / Smite) Next to Send Email to ravishingrono / Send PM to ravishingrono / AIM. Lemme just "Applaud" you right now...

You can read more about Karma here.
Where's the negative karma love?

Re: What the hell is Karma?
What I have found most desirable and enjoyable about C/J/K is that it is an unusually pleasant, interesting, and safe place to hang out. (Thanks to Creidesca and the forum core of quality people who set and maintain that tone.)
I'm uneasy about the “karma” feature. Applause” is an obvious positive. However, “smite” is a very negative word. For the timid, or bullied, or those who’ve suffered major rejection in their lives, “negative karma" could be quite hurtful personally and might deter them from participation in the forum or cause them to leave it all together.
The placement of the karma rating in the member personal info section equals a judgment on the member him/herself personally, an instant (and false) impression of who a member is--someone popular or unpopular among the few who will actually "applaud" or "smite."
I don’t get the usefulness of the karma rating. If we like someone’s post, we usually reply back that we like it. If we don’t like a post, we may disagree with the idea(s) in a responding post, yet flaming is not allowed. (Flaming is a no-no, but smiting is OK? Is a smite really a passive-aggressive's flame? ;) )
Perhaps I have tunnel vision on this, but what is the value or fun in smiting a fellow member? I think C/J/K is more than just fine without the Karma feature.

Re: What the hell is Karma?
Reading the preceeding posts show there are two ways of dealing with something new. You can complain about it and worry that someone might get hurt or you can experiment with it and have some fun.
Technology is neither good or bad. This kind of karma evolved as a filtering tool on community websites like slashdot.org and kuro5hin.org. It's useful in filtering out the more interesting posts when the total number for that thread can reach five hundred items. This being a bbs, a somewhat older technology, it won't really serve that function unless more of the back-end gets replaced.
Browsing around I notice the posters everyone likes tend to have some karma points. This is as it should be. I also notice that no one has gotten negative karma --though I try. It seems the same people who don't attack their fellow posters also do not hand out negative points.
I tend to side with the experimenters. As with all forms of expression, even computerized ones, it's just another thing to have fun with. Do you remember that one OMR show that had three different recaps from three different people? That was new and neat. We need more of that.
These points are just numbers but they could be more. I still don't know what we'll do with them. Let's give them a chance.

Re: What the hell is Karma?
Bueno. mr, how do you do it? So darned logical! allllright, I'm willing to experiment but as you say the original goal may not be achieved on this board. We just can't take it personally. It is always enjoyable to read and share views or get helpful info. Other people's perceptions have certainly given me 'light bulb moments'.
BTW, shouldn't you red-flag that stupendous event you've posted under Events? Once in a lifetime opportunity . . . .

Re: What the hell is Karma?
Does having high or low karma affect your user status in some way? Or is it just like giving e-props?

The latter—karma has no hidden effect (besides possibly getting you listed on the top karma page). If people abuse the feature, Sandy can turn it off.
