Hobbies: posting about TiVo
Hey, TiVo just made me their first (and so far only) featured member over at the official TiVo Help Forums. That's because I like to help people with TiVo problems.
So, if you have any questions on TiVo (especially in conjunction with C/J/K programs), feel free to ask here (or in TiVo's Help Forums or at the TCF). I also maintain lists of Japanese, Taiwanese, and anime programming in those parts of this forum that include special scheduling notes for TiVo owners, as well as the TiVo tips in my sig. (Hopefully, there are other people here interested in TiVo besides just me and Triple Lei.)
Finally, for those who don't know, TiVo also has a Japanese web site in addition to the U.S. and UK sites.

General TiVo Scheduling Warnings
TiVo doesn't know about some drama blocks within bigger blocks bought by companies.
For example, Korean dramas run M–Th from 21:35–22:30, but TiVo just shows a generic “Korean Talk and Entertainment” block from 19:30–23:00.
• KSCI's Japanese morning dramas sometimes overrun slightly and so should be padded a minute for those not also recording 3 Min. Cooking.
• KSCI's schedule for Thursday's morning J-Drama is incorrect. Use a manual repeat recording for 07:40–08:00 on Thursdays.

Re: TiVo
At this stage, DVD recorders like the Panasonic mostly act like fancy VCRs:
• If you have a cable box, they can't change the channels on the cable box. You would have to program the cable box to change channels as necessary for each of your recordings in addition to programming the DVD recorder.
• They allow timer recording via VCR+ code like a VCR.
• They often allow roughly thirty or so recordings (which may be daily or weekly recordings), which is more than many VCRs allow, but works in the same way.
Features Both DVD Recorders and TiVo Have that VCRs Do Not:
• The most under-appreciated feature is that when you have hundreds of hours of recordings, it's much easier to quickly find and play a recording titled "Honmamon Feb 3" from a list shown on the TV than it is to hunt through stacks of VCR tapes (possibly unlabeled) to find the right spot on the right tape for that episode.
• You can record while watching something previously recorded to disk.
• Chasing Playback: Watch the start (or any other part of) a recording currently in progress. You don't have to wait for the recording to finish before you can watch the start.
• Better video quality (but, except for DirecTV/TiVo combos, worse audio quality) than most VCRs.
• Faster fast forward and reverse and with better video quality.
Features that DVD Recorders Have that TiVo Does Not:
• Editing features
• Except for the Pioneer TiVo/DVD-recorder and DirecTV/TiVo combos, DVD recorders have better audio recording quality (mostly noticeable if you have a surround sound system)
• The ability to save to DVD, of course (which the TiVo/DVD-recorder combo also has).
Features that TiVo Has that DVD Recorders Do Not:
• Has much more sophisticated scheduling than any other product.
• Can change channels on cable and satellite boxes
• DirecTV/TiVo combos record the DirecTV digital signal directly with no loss of quality. The new HD model can record 2 HD DirecTV or over the air channels at the same time.
• Current non-DirecTV/TiVo models have an optional package allowing playing music from the Internet, showing photos on your TV, showing weather reports and local movie listings from the Internet on your TV, showing snapshots of what's on a computer desktop on the TV, transferring recordings from one TiVo to another in your house, remotely scheduling recordings when you're away from home, and so forth.
What does more sophisticated scheduling mean? Well, like other recorders, you can program one-time recordings, daily recordings, and weekly recordings that start and end at specified times. With my parents' TiVo, they have it set so that it records all Laker games for my father, but not when one of mother's programs is being recorded, and not repeats (all or parts of many Laker games are re-shown) unless the original showing was missed.
I have TiVo set to record well over a hundred items like the following:
• all Laker, Clipper, and Cornhusker games
• all Laker and Clipper pre/post-games, but at lower quality
• all tennis matches, the Tour de France, the World Chess Championships (ESPN shows this about once a year)
• all movies with/by Akira Kurosawa, Kubrick, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Toshiro Mifune, Anita Mui, Maggie Cheung, Michelle Yeoh, Garry Marshall, Schwarzenegger, Sam Raimi, and about thirty other actors and directors
• all James Bond movies
• all new anime
• all episodes of Stargate SG-1, West Wing (including the two sets of repeats on Bravo), and other programs shown on an irregular schedule
• a list of old movies and particular episodes from various series
• a list of recently released movies that I want TiVo to automatically record when they are finally available on TV years from now
And, of course, I usually tell it not to record duplicates of any of the above.

Re: TiVo
That was a really EXCELLENT review of DVD vs TiVo, ccwf. I still haven't decided which path I might take in the future, but it sure helped clear up a few fuzzy spots for me. Thanks!

ccwf basically covered all the pros and cons on a tivo unit and dvd recorder.
As mention Pioneer has a tivo/dvd recorder. The model is the DVR-810H. It comes with the built in with basic tivo interface. But the big draw back here is if you record to the hard drive you will not be able to edit out commercials before copying that to a dvd-r/dvd-rw. I know this is because of Tivo but how stupid is that. This unit cost about $800. Pioneer also has a none Tivo dvd recorder called the DVR-510H. About $200 less and you can edit out commercials on shows recorded to the hard drive.
I think the big question is if you already have a tivo/replay device in your home. Should you buy a dvd recorder with or without a hard drive. I see a lot of people who already have a tivi just buy a dvd recorder without a hard drive. Of course they are about $200 cheaper. But here is the big draw back. Say you have tv shows on your hard drive with the commercials. Now you want to record them to dvd-r on a non hard drive dvd recorder like the Pioneer 210/310 model or one of the Panasonic non hard drive models. If you don't care about the commercials simple just record the show to a dvd-r. But if you want to edit out the commercials while you record to dvd-r. You have to be there while your recording so you can pause the recording to dvd-r everytime a commercial comes on. When the commercial ends you then start recording again. So you basically are sitting there for 30 to 60 mins depending on how long the show is. Plus if your doing more than one show and putting 2-4 hours on a dvd well you get the idea. Plus what happens you sit there for 2 to 4 hours editing all that video to a dvd-r. It comes time to finalize the dvd-r and you get a error. Guess what you just lost all that time. You have to start all over again. This why it's so much better to have the hard drive. Since you can edit out commercials of shows on the hard drive. But if you run into a error when finalizing a dvd-r. The shows are still on you hard drive and you can also burn another dvd. You do not have to spend another 2-4 hours editing out the commercials all over again on a non hard drive dvd recorder.
I believe their are some dvd recorders that can contorl your cable/sat box. I think both Pioneers can, the new Toshiba RD-XS32 can from what I heared. I also have been hearing the new Panasonic E-85H can. Even though it is brand new and now many stores carry this model yet I know it comes with a IR blaster. Also has a TV Guide type or recording interface.

I checked some Panasonic owner manuals and verified that many models do not. However, I would think that some DVD recorders must indeed have that capability: with roughly half of all cable users now having digital cable boxes and that percentage as well as the percentage of people switching to satellite growing, not being able to control a cable/satellite box is a pretty big limitation.

Your correct on that assumption. Most of the older generations do not have that capability. It seems only some of the recently released models have the capability to control a cable/sat top box. Plus I am not even sure if all the newer models from a particular company will over that or just their top of the line models will have this feature/function. But it is a big limitation to alot of people. For me it is not a problem since if I go away I only would be recording korean dramas and there is not need to switch channels.
But in the next few months after the current and new models are tested and released I will invest in 2nd one.

Re: TiVo
I submitted corrections to Tribune Media Services for some of KSCI's recent changes a while back, and it looks like they have finally been processed. So, you should now see somewhat more correct listings for 私の青空 (Watashino Aozora), 恋文 (Koibumi), and the Bikkuri Bus infomercial in the Los Angeles Times, certain cable on-screen programming guides, TiVo DVRs, ReplayTV DVRs, many other local newspapers, MythTV, and other sources that use TV listing info from Tribune Media Services. For reasons unknown to me, KSCI has apparently told TMS that the Thursday morning 07:40–08:00 slot is public service stuff, when in fact it is mostly 私の青空 followed by a few minutes of public service messages.
Interested TiVo/ReplayTV owners may need to tell their DVRs to record these new programs. Again, note that the Thursday morning slot will not be picked up by a Season Pass for Watashino Aozora and so needs to be SPed separately.

Re: TiVo
Neat... you did that? I was going to comment on how quickly KSCI got their act together and actually named the program, let alone correctly. Remember when ほんまもん was listed as "Drama serial: Sakura"? For about half the show?
Most of my programs are manual recordings. I didn't expect to find these "out-of-the-way" shows listed in the TiVo "search by..." selections anyway, so I didn't think I had a choice. It's a bit unsightly seeing "Manual:" prefix all my shows, but it's reliable.
Just for fun:
