EPISODE 01
translations/synopsis for ep 01 (taken from dramaok):
[forest scene]
chae-ok (ha ji won) and sung-baek (kim min joon) exchange swords up in the bamboo trees.
chaeok: "is your intention to kill me?"
sungbaek: (with a peaceful smile) "i have already killed you"
the two exchange swords.
sungbaek escapes and runs.
[beach scene]
sungbaek is chased by the police force led by commander jo..
sungbaek shot by arrows, falls off the horse but gets up and runs.
commander jo: "the offender return now... jang sung baek! everything is now over..."
(sungbaek continues to run).. the road you run upon is not a road.."
sungbaek: (stops and turns around) "a road that is not a road.. a road is not a road from the beginning.. one person travels on it.. then two people travel on it.. many people travel it.. and that is how it becomes a road.. in this dark world i have merely run toward a new road."
commander jo: "stop the nonsense.. this is merely the place where you will die"
sungbaek: "i heard you. today i shall die here.. but after i die many people will walk the road i travel.. oneday their sweat will cover the mountains and their toil will block the rivers and a new road will surely be made.. a new world will surely be open... though i die now i have not died.. no it isn't so.. but.. (with tears). jae-hee ya.. (holding back tears and fixed upon commander jo) this life of mine ends here.. hurry and finish it!"
commander jo: (loud angered voice) "how dare you the offender asks for death on your term.. the freedom to choose is not yours"
chae-ok steps forward from behind the police forces.
sungbaek: (smiles)
chaeok: "unless you die in my sword you have not died."
sungbaek: "it will so then.. do not make any mistakes this time"
chaeok: "i will cut you deeply"
sungbaek: (with tears again) "if only..."
chaeok and sungbaek exchange swords..

[one year prior.. 1693 a.d., 19th year of king sookjong of josung dynasty]
chaeok serves tea prepared by lady jo nan-hee (commander's daughter) to commander jo and hwang bo yoon (lee suh jin).
chaeok stands at a distance while commander jo and yoon talk. chaeok and yoon's eyes meet.
won-hae arrives to inform commander jo and yoon about the sudden death of a townman's daughter-in-law.
won-hae and chae-ok go and investigate.
chae-ok discovers that the woman had been poisioned through the womb.
back at police station, yoon tells chae-ok and won-hae they did a good detective work however he is not happy chae-ok put herself at risk against the offender.

[polo game]
chae-ok rides her horse and plays in the polo match among the men.
jo chi-oh (commander jo's son) is angry and offended that a woman is playing in the game.
jo chi-oh calls chae-ok and jo chi-oh's assistant orders chae-ok to kneel and beg for forgiveness.
chae-ok: "i cannot kneel. i have not caused an offense which calls for me to kneel and ask for forgiveness."
jo chi-oh and his men get in a brawl with hae-won.. by accident one of jo chi-oh's man are killed.
back at police station yoon learns of the fatal accident and gets ready to bear the responsibility upon himself.
chae-ok fears that the incident will bring yoon down and goes to see jo chi-oh alone.
jo chi-oh offers to let go of the incident in exchange for her life.
yoon arrives and tries to dissolve the situation. he promises to resign in exchange for all the blame.
jo chi-oh offers to let go of the incident in exchange for chae-ok's arm.
yoon refuses but jo chi-oh begins to let down his sword... chae-ok suffers deep bleeding wound but yoon stops the sword in time to save her arm.
chae-ok faints.
[in the forest, on the way back to the police station]
yoon tends chae-ok's wound.
yoon: "... does it hurt.."
chaeok: (with painful look) ".. yes.."
yoon: "... it hurts me too.."
chaeok: (looks at yoon)
yoon: (putting medicine on and covering her wound) "before you became my servant you were to me a sister.. do not make me hurt.."
chaeok: (with tears flowing) "naeuri (na-eu-ri = title of respect as in 'master'), this humble woman cannot be your sister.. blocking the road ahead of you i may be able to do but i do not wish to worry you on my account.. i have served you for 15 years.. the painful road you have thus travelled i understand more than anyone else.. i cannot see your dream blocked by the heavy baggage of me."
yoon: "... a dream that sacrifices you is not the dream i wish to have.. (walking)"
yoon: (walking then pausing.. turning around) "earlier i was harsh... i'm sorry"
chaeok: "(whispering) do-ryun-nim (title of addressing an unmarried familiar male with higher power, as in 'my dear gentleman').."
[police station]
the police recovers counterfeit currency and commander jo is sending chaeok, the damo (lady police), to deliver the counterfeit to another agency while yoon investigates the matter further.
lady jo pours tea for yoon. chaeok sees from a distance and makes eye contact with yoon.
yoon goes to send chae-ok off.
yoon: "(moving close to her) are you on your way out?"
chaeok: ".. yes (smiling at the direction of lady jo).. the tea poured by the lady must be full of flavor.. flavor that does not exist in the tea poured by a damo.."
yoon: "it's not a comfortable setting to enjoy the taste of tea as you think.. your arm how is it?"
chaeok: "thanks to the medicine from you it is fine.. now i shall leave for the assignement and return"
yoon: "chaeok ah.." (ah = term of endearment suffixed to names)
chaeok: (turns around)
yoon: "it's a dangerous assignment and location.. do not put yourself in danger by acting alone.."
chaeok: "do not worry... (gentle smile).. do-ryun-nim.. (bigger smile)..
yoon: "do-ryun-nim?.. (smile).. it's been a long time since i heard that last.. go and hurry return.."

[riverside]
chae-ok gets on a boat with other passengers to cross the river.
a man carrying a sick child and his wife run and beg for a space on the already full boat.
the passengers are reluctant... but chae-ok steps off to make room.. jang sung-baek (kim min joon) and his assistant, soo-myung, make room as well.
just as the family is about to step aboard a governement official jumps in and refuses to leave, citing his work emergency.
the family begs as the child is in dire need of medical attention.. still the official does not hinder.
chae-ok uses force to get the official off the boat since he is unwillingly to move by sheer words.
the stranger with straw hat, jang sung-baek, assists. finally they get rid of the official and the family is aboard the boat.
soo-myung to sung-baek: "he (referring to chaeok dressed in men's attire) is a man of justice and heart.. and by the look of it he has good martial art skills.. if we can recruit him to be one of ours..."
sung-baek: "it's not a man.. it's a woman in man's attire.."
soo-myung: "what?.."

[in the town]
chaeok rests at a beverage stop.
tabak nyuh (hostess) studies chaeok and schemes to steal chaeok's luggage.
at her signal her husband, machook ji comes running grabbing chaeok's bag and runs away.

EPISODE 02
translations/synopsis for ep 02 (taken from dramaok):
chaeok chases him but loses him.
jang sung-baek assists but he too loses him.
chaeok goes back to the police station and sees haewon and his prisoner to find out who the thieves were.
[police station]
byung-taek (son of a scholar) arrives running and calls out chae-ok.
yoon finds out chae-ok returned briefly but left again to act alone against the thieves.
meanwhile, chaeok goes where tabak nyuh and machook ji live.
byung-taek follows her.
yoon and wonhae go after her trails as well.
[house where tabak-nyuh and machook-ji live]
chaeok arrives while the two are counting the money (not realizing it's counterfeit) from the stolen luggage.
dabak-nyuh and machook-ji run out to get help from their gang.
chaeok prepares to sword off with the gang leader.
byung-taek falls off the tree he was on to spy from afar.
chaeok and the gang exchange knives but byung-taek is held hostage.
chaeok is forced to drop her sword to save byung-taek.
gang leader hits chaeok from the back and just as he is ready to kill her jang sung-baek arrives.
jang sung-baek fights off the gang but is met with chaeok's sword.
chaeok asks who he is and why he is following her.
just then, yoon and wonhae arrive. yoon exchanges swords with sung-baek.
chaeok tries to stop yoon but to no avail until sung-baek bleeds through his hands, holding the blade of yoon's sword.
chaeok finally gets a chance to tell yoon that the man is her savior.
yoon draws sword away and apologizes.
sung-baek asks who he is.. yoon states himself as the assistant commander of police station.
jang sung-baek acknowledges: "your name is well known .. (looking at chae-ok) then she must be the damo."
yoon asks for jang's identity but jang leaves .. chaeok tries to bring him down from the rooftop but he escapes.
(from here, this was not aired on KSCI for ep 02)
chae-ok, wonhae, yoon return from the theif house back to the police station.
chaeok asks wonhae and yoon to go first as she stops to rest by the river.
chaeok takes a bath in the river under the dark skies..
chaeok remembers the past...
[15 years prior.. 1679. hanyang city.. house of officer Jang il-soon]
(jang il-soon = jang chae-ok's father.
chae-ok's given name = jang jae-hee.
jang jae-hee has one older brother by the name of jang jae-moo)
15 yrs prior...
a group of soldiers approach house of jang to capture the jang family under the general's order.
jang il soon is denounced for offense of treason (he's not a bad guy though.. the king and the general is more corrupt)
jang il soon teaches jaemoo a lesson for the last time. he writes the 2 words 'balmook' (發墨) and asks jaemoo the meaning.
elder jang: "what is the meaning of this?"
jaemoo: "it means, ink is expanding"
elder jang: "it's a warning. do you not see the meaning?"
jaemoo: "...."
elder jang: "when one's character is at its limit... when the ink runs dry.. that is when you create more ink and the scent of ink.. the same applies to people."
...
elder jang: "..'balmok'.. no matter what happens in the future.. bear these two words deep in your heart and live so."
jaemoo: ".. yes"
jaehee: "father.. then... can one smell the scent of ink on a good person as well?"
elder jang: (laughing) "jaehee ya.. come over here.."
jaehee moves to her father's side.
elder jang: .. "our jaehee... how old might you be this year?"
jaehee: "i am seven years old"
elder jang: "seven.. (closing eyes). seevn... , you are only seven years old.. "
elder jang with his eyes and tears flowing.
jaehee: "father.."
elder jang: "i'm sorry.. forgive this father of yours who could not protect you til the end.. do forgive.. jaehee ya.. i shall repay my debt in the next life..."
jaemoo: (with tears) "father.."
elder jang: "jaemoo ya, no matter what happens you must be with your sister"
jaemoo: (wiping tears away) "yes father.."
the warriors arrive at jang's residence and jang il soon stabs himself with a knife before he can be captured.
jaehee and jaemoo are sent away on a horse.. but their trails are chased by the warriors.
jaehee and jaemoo's horse is shot by a sword and the two fall off..
jaemoo is rescued away by the family servant and they run away by boat.
jaemoo loses his grip to jaehee and is left only with jaehee's clothing tie..
jaehee is left behind, surrounded by the soldiers and their horses...
jaehee cries out: "oh-ra-buh-ni... (elder brother)"

[chaeok by the riverside bathing]
chaeok weeps as she remembers her painful past.
she is disrupted by the sight of machookji trying to take away her bag on the shore.
chaeok comes out of the river and stops the theif.
machook-ji's wife, dabak-nyuh runs out to beg for her husband's life.
chaeok is willing to let them go with the promise that they will never again steal.
the husband and wife swear and are let go.
chaeok gathers her belongings and return to the police station.
[police station, night, heavy rain pouring]
chaeok returns.
yoon who had been waiting for her orders her to follow him.
yoon, angry, orders chaeok to exchange swords with him.
yoon: "to you.. what do i amount to?"
chaeok: ".. the manager of investigation department.. whom i serve"
yoon: "is that all i am?"
chaeok: ".. i, na-eu-ri"
yoon : (louder) "is that all i am?"
yoon gaining in the exhange of swords..
chaeok: "na-eu-ri"
yoon: "am i.. ! am i to you a police manager from the beginning!"
more exhange of swords..
[flashback to 15 years prior..]
the young yoon studying poetry in class..
yoon getting praised by the teacher for his insights.
yoon getting ridiculed by the class bully because yoon is an illegitimate child..
yoon getting into fight with the bully after class.. yoon beating the other child to bleeding..
yoon interrupted by a servant from his household.. on his way to bring a new servant home.
yoon looking at the young servant-to-be.. a little girl with dirt upon her face and blood-soiled shoes.. a young jaehee.
yoon feeling sorrow...
yoon getting punished..
jaehee preparing porridge for yoon.. and getting scolded for going into kitchen alone at night..
yoon smiling at jaehee..
yoon and jaehee sent away to the mountains to learn martial arts training...
yoon and jaehee enduring the hardship and sharing the happiness..
yoon and jaehee growing up..
yoon to resume his father's post..
yoon asks his father to grant jaehee the title and work of 'damo'
father approving contigent upon yoon not developing personal relationship with jaehee..
yoon agreeing..
jang jaehee renamed to jang chae-ok.
[back at story's present time]
yoon: "jang chae-ok.. is it your wish to leave the station?"
chaeok: "na eu ri.. i do not understand what i have done wrong"
yoon scolds chaeok for acting alone and tells her to leave the station if she desires to take actions into her own hands."
lady nan-hee arrives as yoon passes her by and leaves.

EPISODE 03
translations/synopsis for ep 03 (taken from dramaok):
[night]
yoon leaves the field where he exchanged swords with chaeok.
lady nan-hee with a defeated chaeok...
chaeok: "lady"
nan-hee: "he is doing this on purpose to save your life.. so hurry and beg for forgiveness upon your mistake.."
chaeok: (at nan-hee) "please speed up your marriage... so then i can work freely.."
nan-hee: (slight blushing) "chaeok ah.."
[morning]
the police investigators are notified of another murder case.
yoon, chaeok and wonhae visit the family of the deceased and further investigates.
poison is determined to be the weapon of murder.
chaeok makes plans to set up a trap to lure the murderer.
sung-baek and soo myung tend their business in town (in disguise).
chaeok borrows mountain roots from byung-taek to use as bait in her scheme.
chaeok and wonhae dressed as merchants set up a root stand... a youngster carrying his ill mother ask for a root though he doesn't have the money.. potential buyers question if the roots are real.
sungbaek and soo-myung witness.. sungbaek (in disguise) help chaeok by pretending to be a blind root-expert and testify the roots are real... the crowd jumps to buy the roots... sungbaek steals a root and runs off (to give to the child and ill mother).
chaeok runs after the man who has given the root to the son. the ill mother tells her son to return the root.. chaeok offers to sell the root for 1/100 of the selling price.. sungbaek and soo-myung witness.. sungbaek (smilingly) tells his assistant chaeok is a damo.
the suspects show up at chaeok and wonhae's stand, drop a bundle of money and orders a large quantity of the roots.
sungbaek takes off his disguise and discuss the rebellion cause with conspirator.
wonhae wants to inform yoon about their activity but chaeok insists on them acting alone.
[inn, night time]
chaeok and wonhae wait for the suspects to return at night.
chaeok asks wonhae to look for her brother and mother one more time.. wonhae tells her to forget about them since they're no where to be found despite many attempts to look for them.
wonhae, drunk from the alchohol sleeps... chaeok thinks of her aching past..
machook-ji and dabak-nyuh arrive. machook-ji wanders into chaeok and wonhae's room trying to steal money.
chaeok catches him and realizes it's the same thief.
just then, the suspects arrive with their knives around chaeok, wonhae, and machook-ji.
chaeok bluffs to the suspects and asks them to let go of wonhae so he can go and fetch more roots that they've hidden.
[police station]
byung-taek awakes a sleeping yoon.
vice-master baek arrives to inform yoon what has happened to wonhae and chaeok.
[suspect corridors]
chaeok unbounds herself and looks around the suspects' corridors for murder clues.
chaeok is knocked unconscious by one of the suspect who spots her wandering around.
wonhae, yoon, baek, and the police force arrive.
the suspects hang chaeok by the tree and asks of her identity.
machook-ji tells the suspects chaeok is a damo.
the suspect lead orders his subordinate to kill chaeok.
the subordinate decides to rape chaeok first.. and unbounds her feet.. chaeok uses the opportunity to free herself.
chaeok kills the suspects... wonhae, yoon, and baek arrive
chaeok looks at yoon who gazes her with sorrowful eyes..
chaeok runs back to the corridors and siezes evidence for rebellion cause... wonhae passes it to yoon..
yoon throws the evidence away and yells at wonhae and chaeok for acting without his permission.
chaeok defends herself by stating they had to act fast.
yoon suspends chaeok's damo title...
chaeok gives yoon her damo badge and states she will leave the police force.
[town]
yoon and the police force sweep town for suspects and captures a important rebel, noh kak-chul.
[back at police station]
yoon, uneasy.. asks baek for chaeok's badge.
yoon goes outside chaeok's room.. and remembers their childhood days..
chaeok packing inside her room.
yoon: "are you inside?"
chaeok: "yes.. (opening door)"
yoon: "my mother gave birth to me at the age of 17.. people called me bastard.. instead of 'hwang bo yoon' i heard people call me by 'bastard' more often.. my mother married my father.. 24 years after i was born.. on the day i addressed him by 'father' for the first time.. my father passed away.... i had many regrets for the first time in my life.. for not undersanding his love.. i was ashamed of myself for the first time.. (looking at chaeok) have you ever felt the feeling that yourself is dirty?
chaeok: "what you're trying to ask.. i'm afraid i have not a clue.."
yoon: "with half of my blood from nobility and half from slave.. i did not feel like a person.. though i wore the clothes that people wore. spoke words people spoke.. and eat rice that people ate.. i was unlike my father or my brothers.. instead.. i wanted to live undisrupted.. even if i had to sweat for a living.. but no one allowed me to be myself.. i was not above a pig nor a dog.. "
chaeok: "i am the one who is like a pig and dog"
yoon: "do you remmeber how i was when you were a child of 7 years..?
chaeok: "how can i not remember..."
yoon: "for that child.. i could not do anything..."
chaeok: "you did a lot for that child.."
yoon: "ok ah.. in this world i wanted to watch you live like a person.. but when i hold on to you by one arm you leave with both arms.. why do you not understand the danger of acting alone.. i do not wish to send you away.."
chaeok: "na eu ri.. i am troubled by my inability to assist you"
yoon: "if you treasure me so.. then all you have to do is follow my orders in the future... (returns her badge).."
chaeok: "na eu ri.. i wish not to add trouble to you.."
yoon: "so.."
chaeok: "i would rather leave.."
yoon: "do you understand that would be the end? do you intend to end our fate?.. speak to me"
chaeok: "if that is the road that will benefit you..."
yoon: "enough! .. if you insist then leave.."
yoon holding back his tears standing outside the room.. chaeok weeping inside the room..
[morning]
commander jo is informed of a grand-scale rebellion and conspiracy against the king.
commander jo discuss the matter with yoon.
byung-taek tries to keep chaeok by finding her a post at his father's.
sung-baek learns one of his commarade has been captured by the police.
sung-baek plans his rescue.

[in front of police station]
chae-ok leaves the police station.
wonhae calls after her trying to persuade her to stay.
chaeok thanks wonhae for treating her like a sister and daughter in the past.
wonhae asks if she would stay with his family then.. chaeok
baek reminds yoon chaeok can only survive in the police station...
[at a rest stop]
chaeok remembers her past spent with yoon as she drinks rice wine and sobs..
[jail house]
jo chi-oh punishes the newly captured rebels.
yoon arrives asking him to stop.
jo ch-oh refuses. commander jo arrives and orders his son to stop.
jo chi-oh reminds elder jo the matter is no longer a police matter.
[rest stop]
chaeok witnesses the hostess and her family getting bullied..
yoon and baek watch chaeok from behind the bush.
chaeok becomes increasingly angry.
yoon asks baek for chaeok's badge. yoon throws it to chaeok.
chaeok carries her badge and stops the bullies..
[night, police station]
chaeok and yoon in the courtyard.
chaeok: "please forgive me.."
yoon: "(smile) how wonderful it is for us to be like this.. (gently touching her face)"
lady nan-hee sees the two.
yoon, chaeok, baek, wonhae discuss their plan of action toward the captured (noh kak-chul, commarade of jang sung-baek).
[morning]
machook-ji, who has been a servant to the police since his capture, is called into meeting with yoon and chaeok.
machook-ji suggests sending someone inside the rebels.. by making himself a jailmate and winning over noh's trust in jail.
commander meets with judge jung to discuss the fate of the captured.
commander jo meets with his daughter and discuss her future.... possible marriage candidates..
lady nan-hee tells her father hwang bo yoon is the one she loves.
chaeok overhears the last part as she brings tea to the room..
[jail cell]
machook-ji (disguised as a fellow jailmate) creates uproar and gets noh's attention.
machook-ji strikes conversation with noh kak-chul...
[police station]
yoon, chaeok, wonhae, baek scheme to have someone internally from the police force 'save' machook-ji and noh kak-chul so the police member and machook-ji can spy on the rebels from within.
chaeok volunteers to go. yoon is surprised.
[scholar ahn's residence]
chaeok visits scholar ahn who wanted to see her to discuss his son.
chaeok assures ahn not to worry about byung-taek lowering his standards by marrying a servant..
chaeok states she understands her place in the world.. scholar ahn is speechless but grateful.
outside.. byung-taek runs into chaeok.
[police station.. yoon's room]
chaeok: "na eu ri.. it's me chaeok."
yoon: "come in"
chaeok asks for yoon's permission
yoon: "i do not permit."
chaeok: "na eu ri"
yoon: "please don't make it difficult for me"
chaeok: "na eu ri.. did you remember asking me if i understood myself feeling dirty?...why wouldn't i undertand.. i felt it hundreds.. thousands of times.. but at those moments i was hopeless.."
yoon: "chaeok ah"
chaeok: "na eu ri... i saw the pain you endured through.. but my place is different from yours.. i do not even know where the remains of my father is.. i was 7 years old.. people called me a low-life.. a rebel.. not until i was 20 years old did i understand that those were worse than an animal... i was not born an orphan.. but i have no family left.. my brother and my mother i do not know if they're alive or where they are.. i want to see them.."
yoon: "are you still holding onto the hope of finding your brother and mother?"
chaeok: (tears) "hope is held by people.. na eu ri... did you know.. why in this world have i endured living? it is because of you.. because i could be at your side and follow your orders.. na eu ri the love you have toward me how can i not know.. serving you next to you i felt myself breathing.. but na eu ri.. i am becoming a wood before you.. the not knowing (family whereabouts) is worse than living and i feel myself running out of air..na-eu-ri if you treasure this woman allow her the opportunity to breathe.."
yoon looks at chaeok.. stands.. places his hand on her shoulder from behinid.. she turns slightly and he grabs her into his arms.. hugs her firmly..
yoon: (tears) "go... but return.. you must return.."
[jail cell]
the police and machook-ji plan a way for him to escape with noh kak-chul.
jang sung-baek, soo myung, and their commarades arrive to save noh.
a fight breaks.
chaeok, masked, pretends to be machook-ji and noh's savior..
yoon watches the masked woman leave before him..
chaeok, machook-ji, and noh kak-chul escape and join the rebels.

sung-baek shocked that the masked person is damo chaeok but does not give her identity away.
a suspicious dal-pyung aims his gun at chaeok.. he wants to get rid of any outsider..
machook-ji begs but to no avail.
sung-baek stops dal-pyung in time for the gun to fire at the ceiling instead..
[night.. dal-pyung's room]
soo-myung waits for dal-pyung's.
dal-pyung (strong reaction seeing her): "were you severly injured..? everything will be okay.."
[this clips seems to suggest soo-myung actually works for dal-pyung.. even though she is sung-baek's servant]
[morning.. king's palace]
commander jo is ridiculed by other officers for letting prisioner escape..
commander jo faces his fate in front of the king in private conference.
king lets commander jo go.. but seeks reaction from his secret agent (hidden behind the wall) after jo leaves.
judge jung pil-joon stops commander jo and asks what jo discussed with the king... jung pil joon pretends he was worried..
jung pil-joon asks jo if he will be able to recapture the offenders.. commander jo states yes.
[mountainside fields.. road to rebels' camp]
jang sung-baek tells machook-ji and chaeok to leave.
chaeok (still wordless) turns around to leave.. machookji follows and tries to stop..
noh gakchool asks jang to reconsider.
jang sungbaek walks forward and states this road is not for them..
[police station]
commander jo and his men plan for recapturing of prison escapees.
yoon worries about chaeook's fate..
[riverside]
jang sung-baek and noh gakchool are about to get on the boat. when officers arrive with pictures of 'wanted men' and investigate the passengers...
just as the officer is about to recognize noh as an escapee.. machookji runs to make a scene..
chaeok, hiding under the boat in water, jumps up to save sung-baek and gakchool...
the four 'wanted men' escape again..
noh gak-chool: (to machook-ji) "how did you know we were here..?"
machook-ji: "we were on way to leave... but we saw the numerous soildiers following your trails.. i wanted to leave but the savior (chaeok) insisted on saving you... "
sungbaek looks at chaeok but no words..
machook-ji drops sung-baek and gak-chool at shore and gets ready to leave with chaeok..
sungbaek calls out to machook-ji..
[army training camp]

ahn byung-taek goes through rigorous training to become an officer..
ahn byung-taek begs for another chance as he becomes the only trainee to ever fail the courses...
byung-taek astonishes the training officer with his deep knowledge of classical proverbs..

yoon calling out to chaeok silently: "you must stay alive.. you must.."

jang is greeted by numerous rebel warriors.. who kneel at jang's return...

yoon goes to see commander jo. yoon asks commander jo to grant him a leave to visit his mother and attend personal affair..
commander jo asks yoon how he can leave with chaeok's whereabouts still unknown...
yoon leaves.. yoon is met by lady nan-hee.. who has brought a warm clothing for him..
lady: "it's cooler at night then it is during the day.. please wear this"
yoon: "it's still bearable for me.."
lady: "it's times like this that you should worry.. i worry about your health.."
yoon (pause): "there is no need for you to be this way.."
lady (taken back) stands speechless..
yoon visits chaeok's quarters at the police station..
outside her room yoon remembers her words before their parting..
inside her room yoon touches blanket used by chaeok as he misses her..
[rebels' camp on the mountain, night]
chaeok and machook-ji drink homemade mountain wine (it's supposed to be very strong)
as the rebels thank them for saving commarade noh.
chaeok drinks several cups.. her vision shaken by the alchohol..
commarade duk-soo (he is highly ranked but under sung-baek) suggests target shooting.
duk-soo shoots arrows at gak-chool as target.
chaeok's turn to shoot target. sungbaek steps forward and offers himeself as target.
chaeok shoots arrows targeting sungbaek's outline.
the rebels are amazed at her skills..
after everyone leaves.. sungbaek returns the target arrows to chaeok.
sungbaek: "i wanted to thank you.. for saving my life.. i thank you."
chaeok (looks at the arrows.. realizing it has blood on it..)
sungbaek (covering his bleeding ear): "for what reason you came to us.. it matters not.. the past.. forget it all.. i wish to live here with you for a long time.."
chaeok (speechless) stares at sungbaek as he leaves.. chaeok smiles slightly.. then erases her smile..

Golden Age of historical dramas
Like the capricious weather, TV viewers are a fickle lot. Whenever they get a little bored, they change the TV channel without hesitation.
Particularly vulnerable are historical dramas with heavy storylines and magnificent scenes which seem unable to attract young audiences, all too often accustomed to dizzying computer games, speedy Internet and fast food.
In fact, historical dramas seemed to be permanently out of favor among the younger generation. Though several historical dramas were big hits including "Tears of Dragon" (1997, KBS1), "Wang Gun" (2000, KBS1) and "Woman's World" (Yeoincheonha) (2002, SBS), it was the older generation who made up the bulk of the audience.
In the last few months, however, historical dramas have been enjoying popularity among young viewers. The recently concluded MBC drama "Damo" left thousands of addicts in its trail, the enthusiastic fans consisting mostly of young admirers. Supported by its enthusiasts, "Damo" ended with a 24.1 percent viewer rating and there is a plan to release a movie version next year.
"Great Janggeum," another MBC historical drama (Mondays and Tuesdays at 9:55 p.m.) premiered Sept. 15 and achieved an 18 percent rating on its first show, a rating considered satisfactory by industry officials. "King's Concubine," a period drama will air Mondays and Tuesdays at 9:55 p.m. beginning Oct. 6 on SBS. It is expected to compete fiercely with an MBC drama about a real life Joseon woman who served as a king's attending physician.
The historical dramas that are currently popular among the young owe much of their success to bold new attempts which reject the old formulas. "Damo" sheds the traditional form of historical drama and introduces a "fusion" drama, mixing grand-scale action scenes with heroism and melodrama.
"Great Janggeum" and "King's Concubine," based on historical facts, also introduce some new dramatic elements. In "Great Janggeum," numerous delicious-looking foods and colorful ingredients offer a feast for the eyes, making this drama entertaining in spite of the arduous story line.
"King's Concubine" is also being made as a new period drama. "Though it is a historical drama, we will modernize it." Of course, we cannot distort historical facts, but with clothes, accessories, settings and languages, we will try our best to modernize this drama and attract the viewers," Lee Nam-ki, a senior SBS official said.
The changes are not limited to the outward appearance or clothes. The characters have changed extensively, too. The most notable change is in the female characters. Until a few years ago, the female characters in historical dramas ran the extreme opposites: Femme Fatale or good wife and wise mothers. But, Chae-ok, the heroine of "Damo," is a female detective who worked on cases involving female criminals. She rivaled the men in many areas of expertise such as archery, fencing and martial arts.
"I wanted to show the tenacity of the Korean woman. Despite the Joseon Dynasty strictly restricting women's social activities, they persevered, like Chae-ok, who played an active part," Bang Hak-gi, the original writer of the drama, said.
Jang-geum, the heroine of "Great Janggeum" is another historical figure who was ahead of her times. Jang-geum who started out as a royal kitchen hand broke many social barriers, eventually becoming an attending physician to King Jungjong (1488-1544).
Gae-si, the heroine of "King's Concubine," is another strong woman. "She is a complex character. She is ambitious and does whatever is necessary to gain power. Yet, she can sacrifice all for her lover. She cannot be described in the word Femme Fatale. She is both weak and strong," Park Sun-young, the actress who plays the role of Gae-si, said.
As the main focus has changed from male to female, the characters' social status has changed accordingly, from the nobles to the ordinary people. Chae-ok and Jang-geum are from humble families, as is the king's concubine, Gae-si.
"I have described kings, queens and other powerful people for a long time. But, when I directed 'Heo Jun,' the story of a celebrated doctor in Joseon Dynasty, a few years ago, I came to think differently," Lee Byoung-hun, the producer of "Great Janggeum" said. "Kings and politicians were not the only ones who made history. So I think it is worthwhile to show the ordinary peoples' lives," Lee added.
The high TV ratings reflect positive responses to the change. "I am excited when ordinary people succeed through their own endeavors in television dramas. Other audiences may think the same," said Jang Ji-yeon, an English teacher at Kyunggi High School.

translations/synopsis for ep 06 (taken from dramaok):
machook-ji and chaeok spy on the rebels from within.
they report to wonhae their findings thus far.
wonhae tells the two to be careful.
machook-ji asks wonhae to take care of his wife.
chaeok gives wonhae a map to rebels' camp.
[beverage stop]
dabak-nyuh entertains fussy guests.
wonhae drops by to assure her her husband is still safe.
wonhae sends a bird messenger to police station with material given by chaeok.
[police station]
jo chi-oh (commander's son.. who is a ranked general in jail dept.) visits commander jo to notify him his desire to contribute.
jo chi-oh becomes the new manager of police station (taking over yoon's position since yoon asked for leave)
baek receives letter from lee wonhae, delivered by the bird messenger.
jo chi-oh sees baek with the letter and asks about it.... baek makes up an excuse and walks away.
baek informs yoon of jo chi-oh's promotion.
baek shows yoon the map sent by wonhae. yoon makes traveling plans.
lady nan-hee stops by. baek goes outside to meet her. lady asks for permission to enter. yoon approves.

baek struggles to make up excuse of their absence for the time being...
[rebel camp]
jang sungbaek orders his men to make better gunfire.
noh gives ma and chaeok a tour of the rebel camp. noh forbids mah and chaeok from the gunpowder factory.
jang sungbaek walks out and asks why they're here.. mah slips tongue by saying he wanted to know what the gun factory looked like..
jang sungbaek tells them they can go in... mah chook-ji (realzing the tension in the air) declines..
noh reports to sungbaek about mountain residents needing medical attention..
ma volunteers himself and chaeok to go. they are stopped by masked fighters.. sungbaek stops the fighters from attacking the newcomers.
ma asks sungbaek if the masked fighters are the legendary man-eaters... sungbaek assures him those are just false legends.
chaeok holds a reluctant child still while sungbaek attends to his foot wounds..
afterwards, sungbaek hands a rag to a sweating chaeok (smiling toward chaeok): "you worked hard.."
chaeok returns his smile..
a man returns to the village.. he and jang sung-baek thank each other..
the man used to be jang il-sool's servant.. the man is the servant who took young jaemoo (sungbaek) from jang residence to the mountains..
[flashback of 15 years prior.. when jang servant sacrificed his own arm as a token to beg the master to accept jaemoo.. ]
sungbaek remembers the pain of losing jaehee..

sungbaek: "who taught you those words?"

sungbaek and the rebels are informed of a local officer who abuses his rights and attacks citizens freely, kidnaping the women to be used as slaves..
rebel leaders meet (with chookji and chaeok present) and plan their rescue and attack.
sungbaek asks chaeok to come along but orders chook-ji to stay.
chaeok hands chookji a key to sungbaek's room so he can investigate while the rebels are away.
rebels ,led by sungbaek head for the town, with chaeok alongside.
ma chookji sneaks into the room..
the rebels successfully rescue the citizens and capture the officer. officer begs sungbaek to spare his life.
sungbaek: "the citizens that have begged you to spare their lives.. do you hear their voice?..?"
officer: "please spare my life"
sungbaek kills the officer with no mercy. chaeok watches..
sungbaek (drawing sword): "in the next life.. born as a kind citizen"
gunfires go off.. soldiers have arrived.. the rebels get on horses and attempt their escape toward the beach..
chaeok gets shot by gunfire. sungbaek turns his horse around.. sungbaek sees chaeok on the beach surrounded by horses and he has flashback of young jaehee surrounded by horses.. noh tells jang to leave since more soldiers will arrive... jang turns his horse around and heads toward chaeok.. chaeok, injured, fixes her eyes on jang..

[yoon's quarters]
yoon dreams a nightmare of chaeok being chased and injured...
lady nanhee wipes sweat off his forcehead..
lady: "na-eu-ri... what bad dream you must have dreamt for you to shake so"
lady draws medicine for yoon.
lady: "your fever is high.. why haven't you taken any medication?"
yoon: "is this about the business regarding us?"
lady: "it's not because of that. .. please drink this.. "
yoon: "i am fine so please don't bother me.."
lady: "this medicine.. should i throw away as well?
yoon: "why are you like this with me?
lady: "na-eu-ri why do you treat me this way.. do you detest me..? if so i will stop coming."

yoon goes to jo chi-oh's station and asks to see vice-manager baek. [to inquire chaeok's news]
jo chi-oh tells yoon it's not a good idea to see vice-manager baek at the time and orders him to go back.
[rebels' camp]
sungbaek brings back a severely wounded chaeok.
machookji cries out to the unconscious chaeok.
sungbaek orders him to leave the room.
outside in the forest...
machookji tells wonhae chaeok is fatally injured... and cries out to wonhae.
wonhae gives chookji a firecracker to be used if his life is in danger.
inside chaeok's room..
jang sungbaek undresses chaeok to tend her gunshot wounds.

baek watches as yoon suffers from not being with chaeok..
baek: "naeuri.. go... i will be responsible for the consequences.."
baek fetches a horse for yoon.
yoon: "thank you" and leaves... baek begs for a safe and speedy return.
[rebels camp]
chaeok is recovering. she stops outside of her room.
sungbaek: "why do you not rest and come outside? is it because you feel suffocating boredom in the room?"
chaeok nods. sungbaek smiles at her..
sungbaek: "then lets go for a walk.. there is a place where our people rest and work.. "
chaeok watches the many people.. fishing... and washing clothes.. children playng in water..
machookji fishes as well.. ma approaches chaeok speaking with happy tone about the activities..
chaeok scolds chookji for having a goodtime.. admidst their mission.
soo-myung returns from her trip and recovery.
soo-myung spots out chaeok from the crowd...
soo-myung: "na eu ri.. that person.."
sung-baek: "she is a new member of our family"
soo-myung reminds sungbaek not to forget the lives and safety of the many brothers who trust jang.

soo-myung tells sungbaek police manager yoon has left his post.

the rebels meet.. they laugh and celebrate at the news that yoon has left his post..
chaeok is disturbed by the news and excuses herself and rests by a tree..
chaeok remembers her last conversation with yoon..
chaeok packs her belongings and gets ready to leave the camp to find out more about yoon's situation .. chaeok tells machookji to stay there by himself..
on her way off the mountain, chaeok sees and overhears jang sungbaek giving a messenger a seemingly important letter..
she tracks the messenger down and steals his letter...
soo-myung tracks chaeok down and the two battle... soo-myung gains upper hand by throwing drowse-inducing powder at chaeok.. but her sword is cut short by yoon.. yoon stabs soo-myung.
soo-myung severly injured but escapes... chaeok watches as she is unable to move and see clearly..
yoon approaches her..
chaeok: "na-eu-ri"
yoon: "you are alive.."
chaeok struggles to talk.. yoon studies her and begins to tend to chaeok's wound....
chaeok: "na-eu-ri.. my arm will survive. there is no time to worry about such matter ..you must hurry and return to tell everyone the situation here"
yoon (studying chaeok and not paying attention to what she just said): "and the bullet? did you remove it?"
chaeok: "yes... does the commander say we should do nothing at the moment?"
yoon: "did you hurt your arm?"
chaeok: "na-eu-ri !"
yoon looks at chaeok.

the king visits general jung. jung retains his innocence.. and asks for death to prove his innocence and loyalty to the king.

EPISODE 08
translations/synopsis for ep 08 (taken from dramaok):
scholar ahn informs commander jo the news of general jung hong-du's suicide.
general hong-du used death to prove his unwavering loyalty to the king.
the king receives the generals' last letter, written with blood from his finger...
king is upset by the event and orders commander jo not to wish for a living road...
commander jo and yoon are captured and jailed.. for causing the death of general hong-du.
chaeok watches yoon being taken away.... yoon watches her back then turns around...
chaeok remembers the past she spent with yoon.. and yoon's words...
chaeok thinks she is the culprit of yoon and senior jo's ill fate.
[inside prison]
jo chi-oh visits his jailed father. senior jo tells his son not to do anything.. younger jo insists on finding a way to save his dad.
commander jo: "the sin of the father should not be taken upon by his son.. please concentrate not on me but focus your energy on the future of the nation and the citizens.. "
chi-oh tries to persuade his father otherwise but commander jo orders him to leave. chi-oh bows in front of senior jo.
chi-oh: "after you return.. i wish for you, father, to live with the three of us.. [chi-oh, wife, child]"
[police station]
jo chi-oh orders chaeok to get up from her miserable state.
chaeok: "na-eu-ri.. can they live? the two of them.. is there a way to save them?"
chi-oh, chaeok, wonhae work together to look for a way to save the two men. [jo and yoon will likely receive the death sentence]
[rebels camp]
chaeok goes back to the rebels camp. she stops in front of jang sungbaek's room.
jang sungbaek (from inside the room).. "are you now arriving? come in"
chaeok comes in.
sungbaek: (pouring wine into cup) "did you finish your business? will you have a drink?"
chaeok: "i plan to kill you."
sungbaek: "did you find what you lost?
chaeok: "i am a police damo"
sungbaek: "did i not tell you to forget the past? i was waiting for your return.. let us go together.."
chaeok draws her sword and points toward sungbaek.
chaeok: "who are you?"
sungbaek: "were swords required between us?"
chaeok: "shut up. one more word from you and i will kill you."
sungbaek looks at chaeok intensly: "i was sincere toward you. (raises head and looks at chaeok) kill me! your goal was my head was it not?"
chaeok draw sword... sungbaek returns her sword.. sungbaek gains the upper hand.. chaeok under his sword.
sungbaek: "i wished to live together with you for a long time, taking walks.. but i ask you only one question.. am i really one with such sin to die? you asked me who i was.. i am a citizen. like you i am a citizen of this nation. i am a citizen who is trying to make this world liveable. when we meet again.. i hope we will meet in a world that no longer requires swords between us."
jang sungbaek leaves. chaeok to herself: "i have been ridiculed."
outside jang sungbaek exchanges swords with wonhae and his men.. jang escapes.
chaeok comes out of sungbaek's room.. wonhae asks her for status, chaeok informs him the village is empty.
jo chi-oh arrives with his soldiers. wonhae informs jo the rebel villagers have escaped.. chi-ho realizes they have not left long ago, judging from the coal that is still warm.
jo chi-oh orders his men to go after the rebel' trails.. chaeok remembers machook-ji.
police men search the mountains for rebels. machookji is tied up by firecrackers in the gun factory.
chaeok and wonhae find machookji and save him.
police men fall into rebels traps. the police men meet their death one by one in masses.
[river]
jo chi-oh and a few of his men search for rebels in the river..
jo's men fall into a water trap and are stabbed to death by the knives on the trap.
jo chi-oh is left with 4 other soldiers. jo chi-oh cries out.. the remaining 4 soldiers are shot by gunfire from under the river.
jang sungbaek comes up from under the water and stares at jo chi-oh. the rebels appear
sungbaek: "seeing that you have not escaped by yourself to live... you must be a true soldier"
chi-oh: "are you the rebel lead jang sungbaek?"
sungbaek: "yes"
sungbaek and chi-oh exchange swords in the river... with chaeok and baek watching from above the cliff.
chi-oh's sword is knocked away by sungbaek's sword. sungbaek: "at your young age, think of yourself as meeting a wrong fate"
sungbaek cuts chi-oh through multiple strokes of sword. chi-oh falls into the river..
jang turns to leave and sees chaeok up on the cliff. the two exchange looks for a moment.
jang orders his men to leave and the rebels are gone.. leaving the bodies of chi-oh and his men in the water..
[police station courtyard]
the families of the deceased police officers and soldiers weep at the funeral...
commander jo arrives, still in his jail attire. lady nan-hee and his grandchild call out his name.
commander jo walks around... looking at his men.. and stopping in front of wonhae who states his shame.
baek asks jo for death, for allowing the younger jo to die..
commander jo: "i am not the only one who suffers the loss of a son.. among us there are hundreds who lost their sons and fathers and husbands.. "
lady nanhee and jo's daughter-in-law are upset at commander jo's indifference of jo chi-oh's life...
commander jo bows in front of his son's memorial plaque and remembers chi-oh's parting words to him.
lady nan-hee: "was he not the only son you had? how could you say those words in front of your daughter in law and grandchild.. could you not have showned more mercy?"
commander jo: "though he was my son.. he was more importantly a general."
commander jo silently apologizes to his deceased son as he walks away... commander jo faints..
[outside a general's residence]
chaeok kneels and begs for the general to spare yoon and senior jo's lives.
the general gets upset at chaeok and shoots her away.
lady nanhee watches and comforts chaeok.
[jail house]
chaeok writes a letter to yoon (delivered by a little boy who brings food into the jail): "na-eu-ri this woman promises to find a way to save you.. please take care of yourself and worry not"
the little boy returns a message to chaeok.
yoon's message: "it will be a a waste of energy. sending you toward this road is not what i wished for.. all i give you now is my regret.. i may or may not exist, but you must not travel the same road that has led me to this fate."
chaeok leans against the tree and sobs...
[night, station]
chaeok tells machookji and dabaknyuh to leave and pursue a new life.
chaeok tells wonhae and baek she wants to meet the king.
chaeok: "how can i meet the king?"
