Re: TV Specials
Japan: Memoirs of a Secret Empire
PBS program shown on KLCS - channel 58
Three-part documentary, narrated by Richard Chamberlain.
From the KLCS website:classblockquoteCommanding shoguns and fierce samurai warriors, exotic geisha and exquisite artisans—all were part of a Japanese renaissance between the 16th and 19th centuries when Japan went from chaos and violence to a land of ritual refinement and peace. But stability came at a price: for nearly 250 years, Japan was a land closed to the Western world, ruled by the shogun under his absolute power and control. Japan: Memoirs of a Secret Empire brings to life the unknown story of a mysterious empire, its relationship with the West, and the forging of a nation that would emerge as one of the most important countries in the world.Unfortunately, the final showing of Part 1 was tonight. However, Parts 2 and 3 may be seen as scheduled below.
Japan: Memoirs of a Secret Empire
The Will of the Shogun
Part 2. The Tokugawa shogunate.
Wednesday, June 22, 9:00 PM (PT)
and
Sunday, June 26, 12:00 AM (PT) [Saturday night]
Japan: Memoirs of a Secret Empire
The Return of the Barbarians
Conclusion. The years of Japanese isolation.
Wednesday, June 29, 9:00 PM (PT)
and
Sunday, July 03, 12:00 AM (PT) Saturday night]
This is a first-rate documentary full of Japanese art, historical locations, interviews with scholars, and the like. Beautifully produced, as is the website above (which includes such things as an interactive section on musical instruments of the time). The documentary itself is so clearly laid out that I have found it to be masterful at giving a comprehensive picture of the era, major events, personalities and their interactions at the time.

Cinema AZN: Riding the Korean Wave
class float-right height 300px I'm watching this special now, and it's really excellent, once again showing that Cinema AZN is AZN TV's best original program. Featured on the show are segments on Jewel in the Palace, My Lovely Sam-soon, interviews with Bae Doo-na, and lots of short clips featuring a variety of dramas, movies, and actors and directors speaking about Korean dramas. If you missed it, you can catch the repeats on Aug 23rd, Sep 6th, and Sep 20th.
Dasepo Naughty Girls in particular caught my eye…

Re: TV Specials
I would like to mention that here in Orange County we have a channel 322 which comes through Cox Cable. It is a 24 hour programme of different shows from Beijing. It is CCTV9 English international. the various half hour shows are diverse and most interesting. There is contemporary news which is very well done. More world news actually done in depth, and sometimes more facts than US news.
The Chinese culture and life and also the historical programmes are wonderful.
China is so vast and has so many different regions that the indigenous people are all different in their history and culture.
I reccomend watching this TV station if you can get it. I have no doubt you will be surprised at the modern aspects of China's interaction with many countries in business and theatre and music.
