C-Drama: LA18 7pm <後宮甄嬛傳> "Empresses in the Palace" (6/6/2012-9/19/2012)

Unbelievable.....one would hope that the Chinese purchasing/programming team at LA18 can space out dramas with similar themes (or even similar titles) to at least 12 months apart. We are once again seeing another Chinese drama dealing with the lives of Emperor's women during the Qing Dynasty. This story began in 1722, when Emperor YongZheng defeated all his brothers and ascend to the throne after the death of his father, Emperor KangXi.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yongzheng_Emperor

In episode 1, the eunuchs were worried that YongZheng had not visited any of his women for at leat 2 weeks since he ascended to the throne. Even his mother, the Empress Dowager, was worried. So the hunt for the perfect woman began....

Eventually a woman named ZhengHuan caught the eye of the emperor. This is the story of ZhengHuan, who began as a reluctant consort, endured the back-stabbing of other consorts, and emerged as the Empress Dowager when her son became the Emperor when YongZheng died.

ZhengHuan's Wiki bio: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empress_Xiaoshengxian

Chinese drama Wiki link: http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/後宮甄嬛傳_(電視劇)

This drama has 76 episodes. I wonder if all 76 episodes will be aired. If so, it'll be September before we see another drama at this time slot.

This is one of the best c-dramas I have seen in recent years. I would highly recommend watching it if it is repeated at one of LA18's digital channels.

There is historical inaccuracies in the portrayal of the women in this series, but the acting is superb and the women are beautiful to watch (costumes, sets, makeup, mannerism).

A modern C-drama (AA制生活, roughly translated, AA Type Lifestyle) replaces this drama.

I watched this drama and thoroughly enjoyed it although there were no subtitles. The Empresses were all so different as if from different parts of the country but they all had definite beauty. It was easy to see the jealousies and backstabbing that went on.
I missed some of the episodes during the time that apparently ZhengHuan was sent away from the court. She certainly seemed to suffer a lot. I wondered how she ever got back into favor. I did not understand who the nobleman was whom she seemed to love, and who died from drinking wine sitting at her table. I assume he was poisoned by a very jealous wife but not sure. It was a lovely drama, so beautifully dressed and staged. Loved the nails and manicures. Made sure they did no work at all.
I wish they would put subtitles more often on Chinese dramas.

Wasn't the one ZhengHuan in love with a relation of the emperor--the 17th prince, Prince Guo. According to what I read from the synopsis at spcnet, it's she who poisoned him?

From JoleCole at spcnet: class blockquote The emperor suspected an affair between Zhen Huan and Prince Guo, so he sent her to give poisonous wine to him. If she could do, then she proved her innocence. Faced with this dilemma, she went to see Prince Guo with the poisonous wine. However, she had no intention to let Prince Guo drink the poisonous wine and actually decided to drink it herself to save him. Prince Guo always knew that the emperor wanted to kill him and felt odd that Zhen Huan would seek a private audience with him. He sensed something was amiss and figured out that the wine that Zhen Huan brought was poisonous, so he switched the wine cups and ended up dying for her. This drama is adapted from an internet novel of the same name.

Something you might find interesting, quoting JoleCole at spcnet: class blockquote The original author actually wrote the script for this series too. At first, she chose an unknown Tang Dynasty emperor, but SARFT shot it down. In the end, she rewrote the script and chose YongZheng since the Yongzheng era somewhat parallels the basic story frame of her novel.

When I get a chance, I'll translate the episode synopsis for you. Hopefully, you taped the show so you can follow the story.

Basically Zhen Huang (the lead actress) fell in love with the 17th brother of the Emperor when she was in exile at the monastery (not sure what to call temples where they only have female monks). She was ignored by all and one day she fell really ill and her maid when to call for help. The 17th prince happened to be in the area (he was always around because he was lurking to protect the woman he really loves) and saved her. Since she was basically cast aside by the emperor, they were planning to get away and "marry" as soon as the 17th prince comes back from a military assignment sent by the emperor.

Words came back a month later saying the 17th prince died in combat and that's when Zhen Huang discovered she was pregnant. So out of desperation, she decided the only way to survive this is to return to the temple. Hence she devised a plot where by the emperor goes to the temple to pray for his ailing mother. At the temple, his man-servant suggested that he go visit Zhen Huang. When they did meet again, they got personal. Soon the Emperor was visiting the exiled consort often and Zhen Huang announced that she was pregnant again.

It's a long story. I will post more later.

Thanks Merela. I think I got it right as far as the main story was. I don't understand Mandarin of course, but the acting is so good and very expressive and I can usually see what is happening. I find the ancient settings to be fascinating. The garments are so interessting and beautiful. I dont watch the dramas with modern setting mostly. The one I loved so much was Shanghai Bund which was amazing.

Re:

Apparently, ICN 44.6 is currently airing this drama at the 8pm timeslot. Surprised, since LA 18 just aired this late last year. Anyways, there may be a high chance the drama will be subtitled on ICN 44.8 should it air on that channel sometime later this year or next. The majority of dramas that air on ICN 44.6 at the 8pm timeslot usually makes it to ICN 44.8 subtitled within 1-2 years, sometimes sooner.

Re:

18.8 just started (9/1/13) showing it as their weekend drama. It airs Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to noon (two episodes) and from 3pm to 5pm. As I recall from watching a repeat of Office Girls a while back, the afternoon is a repeat of the morning, so they show four episodes each weekend. Let's see, 76 divided by 4 is 19, but don't forget that they started on a Sunday.
